Although poker is a mind sport and requires high levels of skill and concentration, it isn’t under any circumstances boring! In this edition of PokerGuru Gossip Column we bring to you the juicy drama that’s been going on at the 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP). First on our list is none other than the controversial poker figure Vanessa Selbst who raged against Loren Klein’s unconventional choice of a “Make America Great Again” hat during the $10,000 PLO 8-Handed Championship. Next up is Stuart ‘NutterRutter’ Rutter who decided to drunkenly pester Phil Hellmuth and received two penalties from the WSOP for his indecent behaviour.
Well since the action here never stops, lets all sit back, relax and enjoy the salacious gossip that WSOP and the poker community brings our way!
Former PokerStars pro Vanessa Selbst was recently in the news after her rant against three-time WSOP bracelet winner Loren Klein for wearing a ‘Make America Great Again (MAGA)’ hat during his victory in Event #49: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Championship.
Selbst had announced her retirement from the WSOP and poker earlier this year in order to concentrate on her family life and her new career managing hedge funds at Bridgewater Associates investment management firm. However, Selbst was seen in action in Event #40: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet. She had tweeted that 50% of her profits from WSOP will go to the charitable organization Make the Road New York.
I’m heading out to #WSOP for this weekend and then the main. In honor of the monsters in our gov’t, I will do a matching campaign for 50% of my WSOP profits to groups that support immigrant communities like @MaketheRoadNY. Pls join in pledging what you can at this critical time.

Even though Selbst did not cash at her event, she certainly had a lot to say about Klein’s win at the $10,000 PLO 8-Handed Championship where he bagged the humongous top prize of $1,018,336. Selbst took offence to the hat that Klein was sporting while he played the event. She took to Twitter to express her contempt.
A-fucking-men.
And while I’m at it, fuck this assclown on the poker stream wearing a MAGA hat making it so I can’t even watch without puking my brains out. 🤮https://t.co/KVPcmQkOVa

New (semi-new) policy of blocking anyone who complains about my empassioned pleas for humanity for not being as proper and demure and lady-like as you want me to be. Because fuck all of you.
— Vanessa Selbst (@VanessaSelbst) June 27, 2018
She even sassily defended her sentiment on the social media platform.
Has anyone ever had this error to word ratio beat, or error to letter ratio, for that matter? https://t.co/qTxRK8zKb5

But Klein’s refusal to engage with her on Twitter seemed to add fuel to the raging fire.
Loren Klein retweets this and several other tweets but doesn’t want to engage in an actual dialogue. This is the world we live in now, everything is a joke to the rich straight white men (sorry, I know there are some good ones out there). https://t.co/eLrFoW6zpD

When asked about the hat in his post-event interview, Klein said, “I can’t take it off now, the hat got me here. And there are a lot of haters out there that need this picture, just check out my Twitter feed today. All the haters really helped me to bring this one home. It felt amazing, and I can’t wait to talk to all of them when I see them in the Rio hallways, I might even wear the bracelet for a bit. People have been talking shit about the MAGA hat for days and wishing me bad things all day today, it is fantastic.”
On Twitter, Klein chose to retweet people who expressed support for him and his hat and even tweets from those who chose to mock him. He retweeted Selbst’s tweets as well!
Because it’s hard to win a bracelet. Even for a neo-nazi.

Hey @lorenkln I have some items for sale from my recent Vegas stay, I was told you might have recently come into some money and might be interested? If so please DM me for pricing pic.twitter.com/rXHZ7ETy8r

And seeing him mockingly retweet threads where targeted group members say they are offended. Well how can you admonish me without calling him out? That’s disappointing, Kyle.

In the end, we hope that these two poker greats will be able to resolve their differences that started with a hat!
Event #53: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better saw it’s fair share of drama when Englishman Stuart Rutter disrupted play with his drunken antics. His behaviour was first tweeted about by fellow participant Matt Smith.
Playing with Hellmuth in the PLO8, drunk British guy came to the table and immediately started talking trash to Phil and everyone else at the table.
He just got his 2nd penalty in a 10 minute span. Interesting table to say the least. pic.twitter.com/9OZavXo8gd

His intoxicated capers got the ‘NutterRutter’ removed from the table with a penalty. After he was allowed back, he continued to taunt the 14-time WSOP bracelet winnerPhil Hellmuth.
He just came back to the table before his 1 round penalty was over and said “I’m not allowed to play but I’m allowed to watch how badly you play Phil.”
Security ran back over and I think he’s getting another penalty now. pic.twitter.com/BkJASWEzpb
— Matt Smith (@SamENole) June 26, 2018
Following his second penalty, he continued to call out for Hellmuth from his isolated table.
He’s still randomly yelling “Phil!” from his timeout table: he now has 4 security guards around him and we have a huge gallery forming around our table.
— Matt Smith (@SamENole) June 27, 2018
Rutter’s behaviour was beginning to annoy the ‘PokerBrat’ who asked for him to be 86’d (banned).
Phil’s asking for him to get 86’d which seems extreme.
— Matt Smith (@SamENole) June 27, 2018
Smith continued to tweet about the growing tension between Rutter and Hellmuth and the former’s increasingly bad attitude.
He’s back pic.twitter.com/tVIpu6GgKb
— Matt Smith (@SamENole) June 27, 2018
“Phil’s folding like a girl” – floor being called again.
— Matt Smith (@SamENole) June 27, 2018
Pretty sure he just got kicked out of the tournament and is getting 86’d.
— Matt Smith (@SamENole) June 27, 2018
Correction: 2 round penalty this time. Allowed back after dinner break. Not 86’d
— Matt Smith (@SamENole) June 27, 2018
Things seemed to tapper off towards the end of the day and Hellmuth and Rutter both made it into Day 2 of the event, though Rutter was considerably short-stacked.
So, this was all for this edition of PokerGuru Gossip Column. We will be back with more interesting updates very soon!
