Leading online poker brand 888poker teamed up with the World Poker Tour (WPT) DeepStacks for the first time this week for the 888poker WPT DeepStacks Malta that was held at Casino Malta at the Intercontinental Hotel in Malta. With a €1,000 buy-in, the event played out from April 11-14.

The tournament created quite a buzz, and when registration stopped, 275 players had entered the field! A champion was crowned after a full, four-day run and it was Sandro Pitzanti (cover image) holding the trophy and posing for the winner pictures at the end. Pitzanti pocketed €52,000 for his efforts.

Pitzanti, who is a regular at live tournaments across Europe, defeated Italy’s Stefano Schiano heads-up. This is for the Dutchman, his second live title – he had won his first in the €1,000 NLHE Main Event at the 2015 Rotterdam Series of Poker (€49,151). His best live career score remains his runner-up finish in the 2017 partypoker MILLION Germany €1,100 NLHE that he won for €120,000.

Making the victory sweeter for Pitzanti was the €2,000 package that he has won to the WPTDS European Championship Deauville Main Event!

Day 3 of the event began with 13 survivors resuming play. Within 40 minutes, the nine-handed final table was set in motion.

Dutch pro Bas de Laat (13th for €3,405) was the first play to hit the rail, followed by Fabio Assennato (12th for €4,180).

888poker ambassador Sofia Lovgren (11th for €4,180) crashed agonizingly short of the final table. Lovgren lost a crucial flip with ace-queen against pocket nines and hit the rail two hands later.

John Scanlon (10th for €5,205) bubbled the final table after running his queen-jack into Daragh Davey’s pocket aces.
