Simon Brandstrom Outlasts a 1,232-Entry Field in the WPTDeepStacks Barcelona to Win €270,000

The 2019 World Poker Tour (WPT) Barcelona was a record-breaking series from start to finish. Powered by partypoker LIVE, at Casino Barcelona, each of the respective WPT-branded events set records for field size in Europe. The WPT500, WPTDeepStacks, and WPT Main Tour offerings combined to attract 5,098 entries. In total, the three events dispersed more than €6.72 million from the accumulated prize pools, topping the €5 million guaranteed.

Following the culmination of the WPT500 event that was won by Lukasz Fraczek followed by the WPT Main Event that crowned a champion in Vitalijs Zavorotnijs, the last event to draw in the big crowds was the WPTDeepStacks event.

The week-long WPTDeepStacks Barcelona kicked off on March 14 and attracted a ginormous field of 1,232 entries through five starting flights, becoming the fifth-largest field in WPTDeepStacks history. Swedish player Simon Brandstrom (cover image) topped them all to claim not only his maiden WPT title but also his first-ever live tournament title at the event, along with his career-best score of €270,000.

Brandstrom live poker career previously consisted of two cashes, both of which were at the – SKr 16,000 No Limit Hold’em – Nordic Masters Main Event of the Nordic Masters of Poker, Stockholm in 2017 and 2018. He finished 17th for SKr 29,300 in 2017 and 11th for SKr 34,800 in 2018.

The €1,500 total buy-in event came with a massive €1,000,000 guaranteed, but with 1,232 entries across four starting flights, the final prize pool reached €1,613,304.

The field dwindled to only 42 runners at the start of proceedings on the final day. Several notable names were seen in contention including partypoker pro Anatoly Filatov, 2019 PSPC winner Ramon Colillas, Yucel Eminoglu, and Andy Hills.

Following several levels of competitive play, Brandstrom was the last man left standing. Besides the title and trophy, he also won a €2,000 WPTDS European Championship package.
