The man who had the spotlight on him proved speculation true yesterday, as he now leads the remaining players at the final table of the Main Event. We speak of last year’s champion, Sunny Jung (cover image) who collected 1,810,000, ahead with a very slight margin and it is to be seen if he will take back-to-back trophies. Ami Barer follows with 1,760,000, and Konstantin Pogodin with 1,165,000 is at 3rd place.
Joseph Cheong, who made a 5th place finish in the Super High Roller with almost US$500,000 and has emerged as a player to reckon with has made it to the final table with a little more than a million in chips, after doubling up with pocket tens against Jung’s pocket nines.
Cheong was responsible for the exit of Team Mentor Aditya “Intervention” Agarwal on Day 2 of this event.
Shashank Jain is the only Indian to make it to the money in this event with HK$202,000 for 28th place. Only the top 31 players cashed in the event.
The day began with 24 players and in the first level itself, a number of eliminations occurred, including Byron Kaverman, Stephane Blouin, Jian Zhang, David Douglas, and Kai Yat Fam.
Sunny Jung and Ami Barer were the two players hogging the limelight. Jung had a tumultuous day, as he kept clashing with Meng Dian Peng and Konstantin Pogodin. Huge pots kept swinging between Pogodin and Jung, until the latter finally ended with the lead.
Barer was busy making eliminations and seems to be on a juggernaut this year, with numerous victories, including the Aussie Millions.
Day 3 chip leader Yaxi Zhu saw a reversal of fortunes, as she faced a thoroughly frustrating day, facing disappointments, until she was eliminated by Ami Barer in 12th place with HK$406,000.
Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin, the only other woman was also ousted by Barer.
Jung went on to eliminate the final player, Bodo Sbrzesny in a hand that came as a total surprise for the latter. Sbrzesny had and seemed so confident with it that he was happy to see Jung call. Sbrzesny did not even look when the dealer turned a flop of , but the turn with caught his attention slightly and when the river brought forth the , the player’s poise crumbled, as he faced Jung’s , which sent him to the rails at 10th place.
All eyes will be on Jung today, wondering if he will make history and grab the top prize of HK$6,300,000, even as he still faces an impressive array of competitors.
The nine final tablists are already assured the sum of HK$675,000.
