In the PokerGuru feature, ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!

Like the weeks before, this week was packed with a mix of live and online action. With the EPT Barcelona and WPT Prime Cambodia concluding, there were several Indian deep runs to celebrate. PokerBaazi’s Baazi Turbo Series and Pocket52’s Pocket Poker Championship also ended grandly. on the virtual felts.

Kunal Patni was our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” two weeks ago for his blistering online run, raking in ₹21.63 Lakhs across six final table finishes. This week we are awarding him the title for his trailblazing exploits in Cambodia! The banker-turned-poker pro was among the most consistent Indian winners at the 2022 WPT Prime Cambodia and finished second in the “Player of the Series” standings. He posted five deep runs, including winning the Deepstack NLH, and came sixth in the Main Event, netting $49,318 (₹39.37 Lakhs) altogether.

The Indian contingent at the WPT Prime Cambodia did the country proud, winning eight WPT trophies and posting 34 FT finishes! Gurpal Singh (won the Closer Turbo for ₹9.35 Lakhs) and Jasven Saigal (won the Superstack 6-Max for ₹4.99 Lakhs) won their maiden WPT trophies on the last day of the series.

EPT Barcelona was another major international stop closing out its run this week. Italy’s Giuliano Bendinelli staged a chip and a chair comeback in the record-breaking €5,300 EPT Main Event to win a career-best €1,491,133. He struck a heads-up deal with France`s Jimmy Guerrero (2nd for €1,250,337).

Several Indians played the Main Event, but only two managed to cross the money line. Kavin Shah ran the deepest, finishing 92nd for €20,480 (₹16.45 Lakhs), while Apoorva Goel cashed for €8,860 (₹7.19 Lakhs) in 318th place.

On the digital felts, Nishaanth Shanmughasundaram was the week’s top scorer for winning Spartan Poker’s Sunday High Roller (₹14.58 Lakhs) and Adda52’s Maverick (₹2.69 Lakhs). He cumulatively added ₹17.27 Lakhs in weekly winnings.

Vaibhav Sharma, PokerGuru Ambassadors Arjanveer Singh ChadhaAshish Munot, and Samyak Sethi were the other top online scorers this week.

The last week of August has witnessed a slight lull in the online MTT action, but September looks promising. Spartan Poker’s Millionaire Series will kick off the new month, with the fifth edition of the flagship series returning from September 1 to 11. There will be over ₹13 Crores in guaranteed value to chase across 58 tournaments.

There is a volley of promotions and leaderboard races that cash games players can participate in. Pocket52’s Cash Festival is offering ₹4.50 Lakhs in daily rewards across three high-stakes leaderboard races till August 28.

PokerStreet’s Daily Leaderboards have ₹85,000 in prizes each day across the micro, mid, and high stakes.

For those looking to gain bracelet glory, the Natural8-leg of the 2022 WSOP Online went underway on August 14 and will run till September 17, with 33 bracelets up for grabs!

In other news, the Tamil Nadu government has stepped up its efforts to restrict online gaming in the state. It invited public opinion on a proposed ban on online gaming and received an overwhelming response. One of the responses was from Dr. Sandip H Shah, a leading psychiatrist based out of Godhra in Gujarat, who shared that his research proved no direct correlation between suicide and online gaming. The state has arranged a cabinet meeting on August 30 to finalize its plans for the proposed ordinance.

On August 17, Supreme Court dismissed the petition filed by the Meghalaya government seeking a review of the apex court’s previous order granting Karnataka and Kerala legislative competence to levy tax on lotteries run by other states within its jurisdiction.

WPT Prime Cambodia

The 2022 edition of the World Poker Tour (WPT) Prime wrapped proceedings on Sunday, with the Philippines’ David Erquiaga shipping the $1,100 Main Event for $137,008. He struck a three-way deal with Chi Jen “Justin” Chu (2nd for $120,980) and Junnie Pamplona (3rd for $106,482) to clinch the trophy, also bagging a $10,400 package to the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas in December.

Erquaiga’s Main Event victory got him 900 TLB points for the series, making him the Player of the Festival (POF). He rode over India’s Kunal Patni (850 TLB points) and Trong Hieu Ngo (825 TLB points), earning an additional $5,000 package for a WPT Main Tour stop.

The Main Event was the biggest draw of the stop and broke all past attendance records for a live WPT event in Asia and a poker tournament in Cambodia.

A sizeable Indian contingent was part of the 1,050 entries that signed up through the three starting flights, and 23 Indians made it to Day 2. They all posted scores, and two Indians made it to the final table. Day 1A chip leader Kunal Patni was the strongest Indian contender for the title and entered the final table second in chips. He eventually finished sixth for $35,690 (₹28.48 Lakhs).
