In the PokerGuru feature, ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuits. Here are this week’s top stories!

As we cross the midway mark in February and winter gives way to spring, the live and digital felts are coming alive with electrifying action.

While online tournament results are typically the top stories each week, this time, it is the first APT stop of the year – 2023 Asian Poker Tour Hanoi Vietnam VSOP grabbing the headlines for the phenomenal performance of the Indian contingent. Our Indian players locked in 24 ITM finishes in the season opener, including seven final table finishes, and brought back five APT trophies!

Shardul Parthasarathi banked the single biggest score among the Indian battalion. The Young Gun won Event #27: Single Day High Roller – 8 Max for VN₫875.61 Million, clinching his career-second APT live title (third overall), making him our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”

Where Parthasarathi had the biggest score in the team, Kunal Patni pulled out a scintillating run to bag two APT trophies back-to-back. The Goa resident went on a tear on the last two days of the series, championing Event #36: Hyper Turbo – 8 Max and Event #41: Hyper Turbo – 8 Max on consecutive days and scoring in four tourneys, netting VN₫442.97 Million in the series.

Ritesh Khatwani and WSOP bracelet winner Nikita Luther were the other Indians who lifted APT trophies, shipping Event #34: Hyper Turbo for VN₫53.11 Million and Event #22: NLH – Super Holdem (3 hole cards) – Hyper Turbo for VN₫85.37 Million respectively.

While the 2023 APT Hanoi Vietnam VSOP is now in the books, there’s still a lot of thrilling live-action to come. World Poker Tour is returning to Goa after a four-year break with the 4th edition of WPT India, offering 13 tournaments over a week-long schedule from April 12-18. The festival will be hosted onboard Casino Deltin Royale in Goa.

Moving over to the online updates, Sunday chartbuster Sahil Chutani topped the charts. The former poker stable operator championed Adda52 Big Game for the third time for ₹15.58 Lakhs, raking in ₹17.05 Lakhs in weekly winnings.

Areyann Gurbaxani was another trailblazer. The upcoming pro won three flagship tournaments in quick succession – Spartan Poker’s Sunday Superstack for ₹6.60 Lakhs and Mega Stack for ₹3.61 Lakhs, and PokerBaazi’s (7-Max) SPRINT for ₹2.07 Lakhs, accumulating ₹14.56 Lakhs across his weekly run.

Laksh Pal Singh, Young Gun Aayush Arya, and Guneet Kwatra were the week`s other top online scorers.

PokerBaazi’s brand-new PLO Championship Series culminated on Sunday, but the online poker site announced the third edition of the National Poker Series India, dubbed the “Olympics of Indian Poker.” NPS India 2023 is scheduled to run from March 29 to April 16 and guarantees over ₹25 Crores in cash prizes and 324 medals across 107 tournaments.

While the NPS 3.0 is still some time away, the third edition of PokerBaazi’s Baazi Turbo Series (BTS) is just around the corner. The fast-paced extravaganza features a whopping ₹5 Crore guaranteed prize pool across an eight-day run from February 19 – 26.

In other news, the two-judge Supreme Court bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Sudhanshu Dhulia was scheduled to hear the Special Leave Petitions filed by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on February 14. However, since they were listed at the bottom of the cause list, they were deleted. The Supreme Court website has posted a notice stating that the petitions may be heard on March 3.

Goa’s Captain of Ports (CoP) has proposed changes to mooring fees and rent for floating vessels like offshore casinos. The new fee structure replaces the old flat fee system based on vessel size with five categories and monthly fees ranging from ₹50 to ₹500 per sq. meter. Offshore casinos, transhippers, and floating restaurants will pay the highest rate of ₹500 per sq. meter while floating jetties will pay ₹400 per sq. meter, and all other vessels will pay ₹50 per sq. meter.

The Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, called for a national law to regulate online gaming in a recent session of Lok Sabha on February 8, a sentiment echoed by NCP MLA Rohit Pawar. Meanwhile, Manoj Chavan, General Secretary of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, has written to the Maharashtra state government requesting the implementation of the 1976 Maharashtra Casinos (Control and Taxation) Act to create jobs and revenue, citing the success of casinos in Goa.

The Global Poker Index and The Hendon Mob released the final list of nominees across 17 categories for the upcoming 4th Annual Global Poker Awards. The awards ceremony will take place on March 3 at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas, where 29 awards will be presented.

The eight-event-long PGT Mixed Games series wrapped up on February 11, with Ben Lamb (Won Event #4: $10,300 Big Bet Mix for $186,300), Nick Guagenti (Won Event #5: $10,300 Triple Draw Mix for $171,075), Scott Abrams (Won Event #6: $10,300 Dealer’s Choice for $179,200), Jason Mercier (Won Event #7: $25.5K 10-Game Championship for $367,500), and Cary Katz (Won Event #8: $5,300 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw for $83,200) winning the last few PGT titles at the inaugural series.

2023 APT Hanoi Vietnam VSOP Updates

The 10-day-long series featured 34 events and attracted 667 unique players from 37 countries. The 2022 APT Vietnam Hanoi Main Event champion, Shardul Parthasarathi, picked up just one score in the series, but that was enough to place him right on top of the Indian scorecard. The poker coach stormed past the 60-player field (47 unique) in Event #27: Single Day High Roller – 8 Max, capturing his career-second APT live title (third overall). He struck an even heads-up deal with Vietnam’s Pham Duy Anh, with both players netting VN₫875.61 Million each.
