Another week of exciting online action passed us by, bringing us closer to one of the biggest online extravaganzas of the year! Yes, we are talking about the India Online Poker Championship that began its 12th edition on Spartan Poker today! Running alongside is PokerStars India’s Winter Series After Party to keep the MTT lovers entertained. But before we get to the IOPC, let’s quickly recap all that happened in the week that was.


Young Gun Anuj Yadav may be an elusive man, but he sure knows how to hog the spotlight. His spectacular performance saw him accumulate ₹12.35 Lakhs in weekly winnings, making him our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”

Kanav Parwal, Young Gun Siddhanth Kripalani, Amit Kaushik, and PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot were the other top scorers this week.

Besides the IOPC and the Winter Series After Party, players can also look forward to PokerBaazi’s ‘₹10 Mein 10 Lakhpati’ series of events running every Sunday from January 23 to February 20. The immensely popular event has no starting flights this time around, and the top 10 finishers will walk away as Lakhpati each Sunday.

IndiaPlays has improved its deposit offering and is now handing out a 25% instant bonus and SnG tournament tickets to all first-time depositors.

MPL Poker is one of the first poker platforms to announce a Republic Day promotion. The site will be hosting a ₹10 Lakhs GTD Republic Day Special tournament on January 26. Players who don’t want to pony up the ₹2,499 buy-in can get a free ticket to the event just for playing any of the 8 PM marquees on the site between January 19 and 25.

In an update that sent shockwaves through the poker industry, the question regarding the legality of online poker was recently raised by the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court. Hearing a PIL filed by social activist Munawwar Ahmed, the court has asked the Maharashtra government to clarify its stance on online poker – defining it as a skill game or a game of chance!

In other news, Tata Group replaced Vivo as the title sponsor for the next two seasons of the IPL. The fantasy platform My11Circle has been onboarded as the title sponsor for the new IPL team from Lucknow.

Moving to the international sphere, the live MTT scene is exploding in the US with a litany of major events running across major venues. PokerGO’s inaugural Stairway to Millions 2022 has been streaming all the exciting action from the PokerGO Studio in Aria Resort and Casino, Las Vegas. So far, Daniel Sapiol (Won Event #1: $1,000 NLHE for $28,500), Chance Kornuth (Won Event #2: $2000 NLHE for $51,600 & Event #3: $4,000 NLHE for $80,640), Nick Petrangelo (Won Event #7: $50K NLHE for $567,000), Jake Schindler (Won Event #6 for $25K NHLE for 287,500), Michael Wang (Won Event #5: $15K NLHE for $219,300) and Salim Admon (Won Event #4: $8,000 NLHE for $138,880) have won titles!

Triton Poker and PokerGO’s Super High Roller Series are coming together for two major events to run back-to-back, namely, the Triton Poker Sochi – Special Edition and the Super High Roller Series Russia. Sponsored by Luxon Pay, the twin series will feature 14 events between them and are scheduled to run over two weeks from March 1 to 15 at Casino Sochi in Russia.

The World Poker Tour is celebrating 20 years of the WPT Main Tour and has disclosed the first-half schedule of Season XX. Adding to the anniversary celebrations, the brand unveiled celebrity DJ Steve Aoki as its new brand ambassador.

The final nominees for the third annual Global Poker Awards (GPA) are finally out. Awards will be given away in a total of 26 categories at the GPA ceremony to be held live at the PokerGO Studio at Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on February 18.

Coming in at #3 on the weekly charts is Young Gun Siddhanth Kripalani, with 10.46 Lakhs to his name. The poker pro from Mumbai shipped Spartan Poker`s Trending Thursday, also pulling out FT runs in Godfather and The Weekly Highroller.

Bombay High Court Asks Maharashtra Govt to Clarify Stance on Online Poker

In a development that can have severe repercussions for the poker industry, the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court has asked the Maharashtra government to clarify its stance on online poker. The court gave the directive while hearing a PIL filed by Munawwar Ahmed that accused online poker companies of hosting online poker games and illegally passing them off as a game of skill.

The PIL was heard by the division bench of Justice V. K. Jadhav and Justice Sandipkumar More.

PokerGO’s inaugural Stairway to Millions 2022 is on its last legs. Taking place at the PokerGO Studio in Aria Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, the 8-event series features a unique format wherein all players cashing an event win a ticket to the next event, this way playing their way from $1,100 buy-in to the series finale, the $101K buy-in Event #8.

Among the early winners were Daniel Sapiol and The Chip Leader Coaching founder Chance Kornuth. Sapiol claimed Event #1: $1,000 NLHE for $28,500. Meanwhile, Kornuth went back-to-back to win Event #2: $2000 NLHE for $51,600 and Event #3 $4,000 NLHE for $80,640.
