In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!

Making the headlines this week was the intense action at the inaugural Asian Poker Tour (APT) Summer Festival Hanoi in Vietnam that simmered out with Team India returning with five APT trophies and several standout scores!

Deepak Bothra is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!” The CA and IIM Indore alumnus belted out a phenomenal run in the series-ending VND 4 Billion GTD Championships Event, banking a career-best VND 1,065,210,000 (~₹36.64 Lakhs) in third place.

Young Gun Shardul Parthasarathi (4th for VND 769.38 Million, ~₹24.25 Lakhs) and Spartan Poker Team Pro Zarvan Tumboli (8th for VND 287.31 Million, ~₹9.89 Lakhs) also FT-ed the Championships Event.

Amit Kaushik, Kamal Kumar Sogani, Nishant Sharma, Jasven Saigal, PokerGuru Ambassador Ankit Wadhawan, Akshay Nasa, Young Guns Kanchan Sharma, and Siddhanth Kripalani picked up hefty scores in the series.

In comparison, the action on the digital felts was relatively dull, but not for Young Gun Sahil Chutani, who topped the weekly charts for the second week straight. In a repeat from his smashing run last week, the most profitable player of the year on our tracked database, Chutani, won Spartan Poker’s Thursday High Roller for the second consecutive week and shipped the Sunday headliner Adda52 Big Game three days later, locking in ₹22.95 Lakhs in weekly winnings. The poker coach`s breakout run in the last two weeks has brought him strikingly close to overtaking Young Gun Anuj Yadav from the top of the annual leaderboard rankings, with less than ₹10 Lakhs separating the two.

Rajat Sharma and Aayush Arya were two other standout online winners this week. The seasoned pro, Sharma, joined the ‘₹10 Crores Club.’ Similarly, Arya put forth a phenomenal run on Friday, taking down Spartan Poker’s The Elite and PokerBaazi’s The Weekly HighRoller together for ₹10.85 Lakhs, crossing ₹2 Crores in annual winnings.

Pavankiran Bellamkonda, Dhaval Mudgal, Siddharth Gangwar, and PokerGuru Ambassador Deepankur Gupta raked in the other hefty online scores this week.

While the online action has been lackluster this past week, the pace will pick up as July blends into August. Poker lovers have much to look forward to with PokerBaazi bringing back the PokerBaazi Classics. The second edition of the beloved series will run from July 31 to August 7, promising ₹6 Crores in guaranteed prizes across 22 of the site`s most popular tournaments.

Before the PokerBaazi Classics concludes, players will experience the brand-new Freedom Celebration Series (FCS) on Spartan Poker. Embodying the spirit of India’s diamond jubilee Independence celebrations, the ₹11 Crores GTD FCS will make its inaugural run from August 4 to 15, with 100 tournaments lined up for mid, low, and high stakes players and a ₹20 Lakhs-added leaderboard race.

For the upcoming players, the multi-game portal IndiaPlays is hosting its first-ever multi-flight Depositors Freeroll from July 25 – 30. A deposit of as little as ₹500 (using specific deposit codes) can get you a shot at winning from the ₹1.50 Lakhs guaranteed prize pool.

Moving away from the poker action, the news that has kept the online gaming and casino industry on edge is the pending final recommendation of the GST Council’s Group of Ministers (GoM). On Saturday, July 23, the GoM met with representatives of the online gaming and horse racing sectors in Bengaluru, followed by the casino sector stakeholders in Goa. The final verdict on the valuation aspect of GST in these sectors is expected to be revealed by August 10.

On Friday, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, in response to a statement made by Congress MLA Sankalp Amonker during the Zero Hour of the Legislative Assembly, said he would “take action” against real-money online gaming apps.

The Indian challengers made a strong finish in the series, posting multiple FT finishes, and almost made it to the finish line in the VND 4 Billion GTD Championships Event. Almost! The Championships Event drew a record-smashing 288-player field, collecting a prize pool of VND 9,777,600,000 (~$416,866).

New Zealand’s Slade Fisher was the last player standing in the Championships Event and lifted his second APT trophy and a personal-best VND 2,298,440,000 (~$98,200) for the win.
