In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!

While July ended on a high note, August is off to a brilliant start, marking the beginning of another busy season for poker players.

With the second edition of the PokerBaazi Classics now well underway and Spartan Poker’s Freedom Celebration Series (FCS) starting today, the virtual felts will be teeming with activity in the coming week! Live poker is also on the uptick, with major events running across the Asian circuit and in Goa. But first, let’s take a look at the week that was.

Kunal Patni topped the online charts this week, walking away with our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” title. A popular personality in the domestic circuit, Patni pulled out a blistering run, raking in ₹21.63 Lakhs on the back of six final table finishes. The highlight of his weekly scorecard for his runner-up finishes in Spartan Poker’s Friday High Roller (6-Max) (₹5.52 Lakhs) and PokerBaazi’s The Summit (₹4.03 Lakhs).

WSOP bracelet winner Aditya Sushant, Amit Kaushik, Ashit Sharma, and Young Gun Sanat Mehrotra were the other breakout winners this week – all netting over ₹10 Lakhs in online MTTs.

With India’s 75th Independence Day (August 15) less than two weeks away, the Freedom Spirit is the favor of the month, and most poker platforms have rolled out promotions around this theme.

One of the major attractions this week will be Spartan Poker’s Freedom Celebration Series (FCS) which kicked off its inaugural series today. Ten FCS tournaments run daily on the site, divided across the Low, Mid & High categories, promising thrilling action to everyone!

August is the month of independence! To help poker players root for our Indian athletes at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Spartan Poker is hosting the unique Commonwealth Games (CWG) Challenge for cash game players. The challenge went live on July 28, the same day the 2022 Commonwealth Games took off at Birmingham, and will continue until August 15. Open to anyone playing at the NLH cash tables of stakes ₹1/₹2 to ₹25/₹50, the leaderboard challenge requires players to collect contest points by making a flush on a winning hand. The top-ranked players stand a chance to win from ₹4.20 Lakhs in total prizes through the Daily Contest and the Overall Contest.

Pocket52 has also launched its ‘Jeetne ki Azaadi’ campaign in August, embracing the spirit of India’s Diamond Jubilee Independence Day. With over 200 MTTs and ₹3.80+ Crores in guaranteed prizes, Pocket52’s August lineup is a paradise for the low-to-mid stakes players! The poker network has also gone live with a Cash Leaderboard League for the first week of August, promising ₹52 Lakhs in rewards for cash game players through seven leaderboard races.

Joining the Independence Day celebrations, MPL Poker has come out with its Freedom Dhamaka promotion, offering a flat 50% Rakeback up to ₹25,000/day to players who play on any PLO cash table of stakes ₹50/₹100 & higher. The offer is valid for all games played between 11 AM to 3 AM between August 1-15.

For cash game players who like to put in the volume, IndiaPlays has brought back its popular Progressive Leaderboard that will run throughout August.

Another cash game promotion brought back by popular demand is PokerDangal’s “10 Ka Dum,” which promises ₹10 Lakhs in leaderboard prizes from August 3 to 12.

While we are on the topic of comebacks, PokerHigh’s The Player Hunt Season 2 is all set to be released on celebrity VJ and actor Rannvijay Singha‘s YouTube channel later this month.

Asia`s largest poker site, Natural8, has launched three side games on its unique All-In Or Fold (AOF) poker variant.

Breaking away from the online domain, Team India has been crushing the South Asian poker circuit. After a dominating run in the last three poker stops in Vietnam, many Indian pros have made their way to Manila for the 2022 Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Manila. In less than a week, the team has won three titles and posted 11 final table finishes, accumulating 27 cashes overall.

PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot has been the most prolific winner from the team in the series. The MTT pro and coach clinched his career-first international title in Event #17: ₱100K NLH 6 Handed – Re-Entry for ₱1.362 Million (~₹19.31 Lakhs) – the highest score by an Indian at the series so far.

Akshay Nasa (Won Event #12: ₱100K NLH Shotclock – Freezeout for ₱712,200, ~₹10.15 Lakhs) and Young Gun Gaurav Sood (Won Event 4: ₱55,000 NLH – Deepstack – Single Re-Entry for ₱555,000, ~₹7.94 Lakhs) were the other two Indians to win titles in the opening week.

Coming back to the domestic circuit, live poker action has roared back to life in Goa, with the Adda52 Colossus High Roller Series commencing its run on August 2 at the Deltin Royale in Goa. Seasoned pro Shravan Chhabria shipped the series-opener ₹50K Warm Up Bounty, banking a winner’s paycheque worth ₹10.46 Lakhs (including ten bounties worth ₹1.50 Lakhs).
