In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round-up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

The temperatures seemed hotter than ever as the world’s biggest poker jamboree i.e. World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2018 has arrived in style with all the hullabaloo deserved by an event of such magnitude. This year will see the largest-ever Indian turnout at the series and while many have reached or are in transit, several others will join in at a later date. The next few weeks promise to be very interesting and PokerGuru will bring you highlights of all the action as it unfolds.

Leading up to the WSOP was the 2018 Super High Roller Bowl at the ARIA Resort & Casino Las Vegas that was taken down by USA’s Justin Bonomo for $5 Million with poker superstar Daniel Negreanu missing out at second place.

The party was simultaneously going at the APL Road Series Vol. 2 at Pro Poker Club in Vietnam where a huge Indian contingent is busy making waves with two side event titles already in the bag. Young Gun Devesh Thapar won the KO Bounty event while Adarsh Jayappa shipped the Super Deepstack Turbo event.

The aforementioned festivities didn’t seem to fade the online action as Indian pros came out all guns blazing on the virtual felts. The week’s biggest online success story was Shashank ‘Westworld’ Jain who won the PokerBaazi BSS ₹15 Lakhs GTD event to collect the ₹3.15 Lakhs top prize and is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week”.

In domestic affairs, a big delight came from PokerLion.com, which announced its new weekly raffle prize where one winner will get their hands on the Hero Maestro Scooter each week in June. Meanwhile, debacles in Goa continued as Corporation of City of Panaji finally intervened in the Maharaja Casino footpath barricade row this week.

In another huge news, Portugal has joined France and Spain in the PokerStars shared player pool, Poker Central and Twitch TV joined hands to live stream WSOP 2018 events, WSOP released its U.S. Circuit schedule for 2018-2019, Phil Galfond’s Run It Once poker site announced two features – auto seating and fixed buy-ins and Paddy Power Betfair acquired DFS site FanDuel.

We also have three important updates from world’s biggest poker site PokerStars. The online giant first stopped its real money games in Hong Kong, then came the announcement of a new game called Showtime Hold’em that is currently running on a trial basis on the international client followed by news of Team PokerStars pros hosting unique tournaments to give away PSPC Platinum Passes.

Besides the above, we also have tournament reports from Oriental Poker Championship, WPT Tournament of Champions Season XVI, WPT Bellagio Elite Poker Championship $25K High Roller, ARIA WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic, and WSOP Circuit Harrah’s New Orleans Main Event.

The recent spate of upcoming players making BIG scores online continues, emphasizing the growing popularity of the sport. This week was no different as a bunch of well known pros mixed with new names came out shining with numerous big scores. The biggest one was from Shashank ‘Westworld’ Jain, who shipped the PokerBaazi ‘Baazi Super Sunday ₹15 Lakhs GTD (SuperStack)’ for ₹3.15 Lakhs and claims our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” title.

‘OMGZ_ITS_RB’ won ₹2.40 Lakhs for 1st place in the PokerStars India ‘Sunday Special – ₹5,000 NLHE, ₹12 Lakhs GTD’

Sumit ‘boronyx’ Sapra won ₹1.23 Lakhs for 1st place in the PokerBaazi ‘Baazi Super Sunday (₹5 Lakhs GTD) (MonsterStack Hyper-Turbo)’

Vishal ‘spartacus’ Tulsyan won ₹97,480 for 1st place in the MadOverPoker ‘Hysteria’

Deepak ‘Peacelover’ Singh won ₹38,000 for 1st place in the PokerBaazi ‘Baazi Super Sunday (₹1 Lakh GTD) (Turbo Freezeout)’

Pratik ‘Lazybones’ Kumar won ₹35,000 for 1st place in the 9stacks ‘Sunday Stacks’

 

PokerLion.com Launches Weekly Raffle Prize Of Hero Maestro Scooter For June

India’s newest site PokerLion.com unveiled its June offer this week featuring a weekly Raffle prize of Hero Maestro scooter from June 4 to June 24. Players can earn a maximum three raffle tickets per day by playing MTT’s, minimum 50 hands in cash games and five Fish Party SNGs.

In another historical development, Portugal has joined France and Spain in PokerStars’ shared player pool in Southern Europe, allowing online players to compete in common, real-money poker tables. To celebrate this news, PokerStars even announced a €5 Million guaranteed prize-pool online poker series in June.

This past week, PokerStars’ much-awaited new poker game variant, Showtime Hold ‘em launched on PokerStars.com on trial basis. The game is a twist to the conventional Texas Hold ‘em and features a six-handed table where cards folded by players are revealed.

‘Run It Once’ Poker Site to Feature Auto Seating & Fixed Buy-Ins

Phil Galfond revealed the two prime features of the online poker site ‘Run It Once’. These include auto seating and fixed buy-ins. Galfond stated that the site will focus on giving recreational players the attention and fair-game opportunity but will not bring a poor gaming experience for pros.

APL Road Series Vol. 2 Vietnam

The Asia Poker Tour (APT) opened its APL Road Series Vol. 2 at Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam on May 25. Team India has won two titles already, including KO Bounty event title by Devesh Thapar and Super Deepstack Turbo event title by Adarsh Jayappa. The series will run through June 4 and a host of our challengers have made it to Day 2 in the VND 5 Billion GTD Main Event.

Corporation of City of Panaji Intervenes in Maharaja Casino Footpath Barricade Row

Amid local outcry in Goa this week, Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) intervened in the row regarding the footpath-area occupied by Casino Maharaja in Panjim, asking Captain of Ports (CoP) to clarify whether it gave permission to Golden Globe Hotels Pvt. Ltd. (GGHPL) for this, else it will remove the ‘encroachment’.

WSOP Releases U.S. Circuit Schedule For 2018-2019

Following the culmination of 2017-2018 Season of World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) tournaments, WSOP announced its U.S. Circuit Schedule for 2018-2019, featuring 28 stops including two new stops with the Horseshoe Baltimore stop no longer featuring in the schedule. Attractive features like big blind ante, new price points and increased starting chips have also been introduced.

Las Vegas Culinary Workers Union May Go On Strike

News came this week that the Las Vegas Culinary Workers Union Local 226 voted to go on a strike by month-end unless contract agreements were settled by June 1. If a deal isn’t reached, nearly 50,000 workers across 34 different casinos in Vegas will walk off their jobs, which will surely impact the business during the busy summer season potentially impacting WSOP 2018.

Paddy Power Betfair Acquires FanDuel

Paddy Power Betfair (PPB) acquired Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) site FanDuel this past week. PPB will hold a 61% stake and existing FanDuel investors will own 39% of the combined business. PBB is contributing its current US assets of $612 Million, $158 Million of cash in the merger and can opt to increase its stake in the future.

Vietnam-Based ‘Laguna Lăng’Resort Acquires Casino License

The ‘Laguna Lăng’ resort in Vietnam has become the first resort in the country to acquire a casino license in the past 10 years for its $2 Billion resort project in Thua Thien Hue province. The resort is expected to begin casino operations by 2022.

Oriental Poker Championship

The HK$16,500 Main Event of the inaugural Oriental Poker Championship (OPC) 2018 took place in the Venetian, Macau this past week and witnessed attendance from 513 players. Xiaobo Zhou dislodged strong contender, Ivan Leow to win the title and prize money of HK$1,451,000.

Matt Waxman Wins WPT Tournament Of Champions Season XVI

The final table of season-ending World Poker Tour (WPT) Tournament of Champions (TOC) concluded at the Esports Arena in Las Vegas this past week. It was the largest WPT TOC to-date with 80 WPT Champions Club members gunning for the coveted title. When the dust settled, Matt Waxman won the title and pocketed $463,375 for his stellar performance.

Tom Marchese Wins WPT Bellagio Elite Poker Championship $25K High Roller

The Esports Arena in Las Vegas hosted its first live poker tournament, the World Poker Tour (WPT) Bellagio Elite Poker Championship $25K High Roller on May 25. 54 entrants battled over the trophy and by the end, Tom Marchese picked up the title along with the first-place prize worth $432,000.

Darren Elias Wins ARIA WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic

The World Poker Tour (WPT) WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic was hosted at ARIA in Las Vegas with a $10,000 buy-in that created a prize pool of $1,555,200 from 162 entries. Three-time WPT title winner Darren Elias emerged victorious for $387,580 including a $15,000 seat in the WPT Tournament of Champions.

Jerry Monroe Wins WSOP Circuit Harrah’s New Orleans Main Event

The World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) tournaments for 2017-2018 rounded up with the Harrah’s New Orleans Main Event that witnessed participation from 677 players and generated a $1,015,500 prize pool. Jerry Monroe won his second career Main Event title, pocketed $208,184 in the process.
