Being the dynamic game that it is, poker has often attracted the attention of Hollywood and a plethora of stars. Over the decades, several movies have been made featuring the mind sport, the most prominent of which was the Matt Damon and Edward Norton starrer ‘Rounders.’ The cult classic had revolved around the protagonist’s (Damon) dreams of winning at the World Series of Poker (WSOP). Well, it seems that another film featuring the ‘World’s Biggest Poker Festival’ is in the works. And this time it’s going to star Tiffany Haddish!

Directed by Paul Schrader, who was nominated for an Academy Award for the 2017 dramatic thriller ‘First Reformed,’ the upcoming film, titled ‘The Card Counter,’ brings together the WSOP and Abu Ghraib. Talking about the film, Schrader claimed that ‘The Card Counter,’ is in the spirit of his past boundary-pushing work. “In my films, I’ll sort of combine two worlds that seem to have nothing to do with each other. In the new one, it’s the world series of poker and Abu Ghraib,” Schrader told reporters.

The film said to star Oscar Isaac in the lead is about a gambler and ex-serviceman who tries to reform a young man looking to exact revenge on a mutual enemy. Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe will also be featuring in the movie, which is being financed by HanWay Films.

Regarding the appointment of Haddish, Schrader said, “I love Tiffany. I’ve never met her, but I was on the phone with her for an hour. She’s a firecracker. It’s like talking to a live-wire connection. She’s very funny and, of course, she makes you funny. When someone’s sharp, that makes you get sharp because you want to keep up. So that’s all good.”

‘The Card Counter’ is yet to begin production, but will certainly be on the watchlist of most poker lovers as and when it hits the theatres!
