One of the last few high profile live events to play out before the Coronavirus pandemic practically brought an end to all the live poker action was the partypoker MILLIONS Super High Roller Series Sochi. The 10-event series played out at Casino Sochi in Russia from March 6 to 15. The series was organized in partnership with PokerGO and Triton Poker, and one of the last few events to play out at the stop was the $250,000 buy-in Super High Roller Bowl (SHRB) Russia Main Event.
Coming out on top at the event was a familiar name in Canada’s Timothy Adams (cover image). Adams had just 41 days back, beat Kahle Burns to the Super High Roller Bowl Australia title. While Burns failed to pick up a score in the SHRB Russia, Adams put in a repeat performance as he topped the 40-entry field to take home the title and the whopping $3.6 Million first-place prize money!
In the heads-up play, Adams locked horns with another former SHRB champion Christoph Vogelsang who had to concede defeat for a runner-up finish and a $2.4 Million paycheque.
The tournament could gather only 34 entries on Day 1, with 26 among them bagging a stack for Day 2. With late registrations open through the first level of Day 2, the field quickly expanded to 40 runners.
Only the final seven players made it to the last day of play, and many heavyweights fell out before that. The list of eliminations included superstars like Bryn Kenney, Jason Koon, Paul Phua, Sam Greenwood, Kahle Burns, and Luc Greenwood.
Final Day Chip Counts
With only six places paid, there would be one player who would return empty-handed. It took 45 minutes of play to reach the money, and in the end, it was the British phenom Stephen Chidwick who got tagged as the bubble boy after being eliminated by Vogelsang in seventh place.
Final Table Recap
With Chidwick out, the six finalists locked in at least $600,000 in prize money.
Soon enough, eventual runner-up Christoph Vogelsang sent Ivan Leow packing in sixth place.
Next up, three-time bracelet champion Adrian Mateos lost three big flips in quick succession to eventually hit the rail in fifth place. The final hand had Mateos’ ace-queen up against Ben Heath’s deuces, but the former failed to improve.
Over the next five hours, the chip lead kept exchanging hands between the four players.
Bringing an end to the monotony was the start-of-day chip leader Ben Heath who lost a big pot to Vogelsang to become short-stacked. Short on options, Heath got it in from the small blind with and got snapped by the big blind Adams who held a better . Heath failed to connect to the board and lost his tournament life in fourth place to collect his first SHRB cash.
Around 20 minutes later, partypoker Team Pro Mikita Badziakouski crashed out in third place. After losing most of his stack, Badziakouski got into a battle with Vogelsang. The latter raised to 1.5 Million on which Badziakouski called, putting himself all-in with . Vogelsang tabled . Adams flopped two pair on the runout to get the heads-up match going!
Christoph Vogelsang was a slight favorite at the start of the heads-up clash holding almost 55% of the chips in play. Adams, however, reversed the equation by winning a massive pot, but Vogelsang fought back. The to and fro went on for the better part of two hours before Adams clinched the title. The final hand saw Adams complete from the small blind. Vogelsang moved all-in for 3.7 Million. Adams snap-called.
