The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Main Event at the Riverside Casino in Iowa saw Timothy Gundrum (cover image) walking away with the title and a personal-best $170,769.

Being Gundrum’s biggest live tourney score, the win more than doubled his lifetime cashes in one fell swoop. His previous biggest result was a fifth-place finish at the WSOPC Hammond Main Event in 2017 for $87,072. Together the MSPT win and WSOPC cash make up the lion’s share of his current $272,103 in live MTT earnings.

“This feels so surreal,” Gundrum said in his post-win interview. “It’s the best poker I’ve played in my life, over a sustained two-day period.”

The $1,100 buy-in event attracted 928. This broke records for the Riverside Casino. Their previous largest MSPT Main Event field was 862 entries registered during the MSPT Riverside $1,100 Main Event in March 2021. However, this is still substantially short of the MSPT Venetian’s series record of 2,790 entries set last month.

With the top 99 players slated to finish in the money, notables like Gary Herstein (37th for $3,055), Ryan Phan (49th for $2,785), DJ Buckley (60th for $2,606), Eric Eelkema (63rd for $2,606), and Benjamin Craig (99th for $2,156) made the money line.

Final Table Recap

Jalen Heald was the first player to hit the rail in ninth place. Peyton Smith (8th) and Todd Bartlett (7th) joined Heald at the rail quickly.

Jason Gross was the next one out in sixth place after losing a crucial flip with Ace-Jack to Stephen Torre’s pocket sixes.

Down to five-handed play, Mike Estes was shown the door after his pocket tens were cracked by Wesley Cannon’s Ace-Queen.

Next to go was Stephen Torre when his ran into Jim Erickson’s , ending the former’s run in fourth place.

Gundrum then entered three-handed play with a little over half the chips in play but Wesley Cannon kept chipping up and took over the chip lead half an hour later. However, Gundrum took it right back and eventually wound up eliminating Cannon in third place. The latter’s pocket tens failed to match up to Gundrum’s King-Jack.

Cannon’s elimination saw Gundrum take roughly 85% of the total chips in play into his heads-up match against Jim Erickson. The heads-up lasted for about 10 minutes, concluding when Erickson’s Ace-Queen was bested by Gundrum’s Ace-King.
