The inaugural short deck event of the 2023 Triton Poker Super High Roller Series in Cyprus, Event #15: $25K Short Deck Ante-Only, saw Richard Yong, Triton Poker’s co-founder, rise to the top. Demonstrating formidable skill, Yong outclassed a competitive field of 38 entries, including 19 unique contenders, many of whom are among the world’s best players.
This triumph, which marks Yong’s second Triton title, also earned him an impressive cash prize of $323,000. The Event #10: $25K NLH PLO champion Chris Brewer earned the runner-up spot, adding $222,000 to his winnings, his third cash from the ongoing series.
Unlike his friend and fellow co-founder, Paul Phua, Yong usually prefers to maintain a low profile, but his prowess in short-deck poker is widely acknowledged. Yong’s first Triton title was secured in May 2018 at the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Montenegro HK$250K 6-Max event, where he won HK$3,046,000. His victories invariably heighten the festivities at Triton events, underlining his central role within the Triton family.
Ranked as the #2 player on Malaysia’s All-Time Money List, Yong’s recent win has bolstered his lifetime live earnings to an impressive $16,145,842.

After the win, Richard Yong said, “I know everybody like Triton Series tournaments because everybody is very friendly, like family.”
He added, “I would like to see Triton go up and up. Be strong, the best in the world.”
“Short deck is easy for me to play, because full deck has a lot of super players and it’s difficult for me to beat them,” Yong said. “They’re so good and so young. I’m the old man. I can just play this gamble game, very fast.”
Yong expressed that Triton is more than just a venture for him and Phua; it’s a passion project that is continually improving and evolving.
“In our early days, Paul and I found ourselves drawn to poker tournaments around the globe,” Yong recounted. “That shared enthusiasm led to the birth of Triton. It brings us immense joy to see how much Triton has grown since its inception.”
The $25,000 buy-in Event #15 collected $950,000 in the prize pool and paid out the top six finalists. Danny Tang was eliminated in the seventh position as the money bubble.
