The second event of the 2019 Triton Poker High Roller Series Jeju, HK$500K Short Deck Ante-Only, kicked off on March 3 and wrapped on March 4. The event pulled in a total of 69 entries (45 unique and 24 re-entries) creating a prize pool of HK$32,430,000 (US$4,132,105). Overcoming the field to claim his first-ever Triton title was Hong Kong’s Devan Tang (cover image) who banked HK$9.7 Million (US$1.24 Million) for his win.
Currently ranked second on the China All-Time Money List, Tang total live tournament earnings stand tall at US$6,259,809. Tang had a spectacular run in the event, particularly with pocket aces through which he brought about several eliminations. Talking about his win, Tang said, “I’m very, very happy about it. I got very lucky. I was lucky the whole way.” He further added, “It was a tough field, for sure. When you’re playing this big and you make the final table, you have to play your best for sure.”
Only eight out of the 69 entries were assured payouts and following the elimination of Paul Phua (8th for HK$1,300,000), the seven-handed final table was set up.
Final Table Recap
Belarusian pro-Mikita Badziakouski has made quite a name for himself in the high-stakes circuit but was unable to proceed much farther in this event as he was the first to fall after the final table commenced. He lost a massive pot to Devan Tang, after which Jason Koon cleaned him up. Badziakouski’s pocket eights were no match for Koon’s pocket kings, and the former was eliminated in seventh place.
Short-stacked Chan Wai Leong was next to go. Leong’s ran into Tang’s , and the latter’s hand held on, resulting in Leong’s sixth-place exit.
The next player to bid adieu to the final table was Isaac Haxton. Haxton and Peter Jetten went all-in with the board open . Haxton tabled and Jetten turned over , leading to Haxton losing a majority of his chips. Soon after that, Haxton was eliminated in fifth place at the hands of Tang and his pocket rockets.
Jason Koon, who was playing in his first major tournament after becoming a Triton Poker ambassador, had the most experience playing short-deck hold’em at the final table, but even with all his experience he could not keep his place at the felt for too long. Koon’s pocket queens were cracked by Jetten’s rivered straight, and the former walked out in fourth place.
Frenchman Romain Arnaud pitted his against Tang’s and came up short to take third place, setting up the heads-up confrontation between Peter Jetten and Devan Tang.
Tang had a three-to-one chip lead over Jetten, but the Canadian played exceptionally well to keep the Hong Kong pro waiting for his title. After more than an hour of one-on-one play, Tang finally claimed his career-first Triton title for a whopping HK$9,730,000!
