The fifth and the final event of the 2022 Triton Poker Special Edition Series Cyprus is now in the books, wrapping up the high roller series. The poker superstar from Hong Kong, Winfred Yu (cover image), topped the 41-entry field in Event #5: $75,000 Short Deck to grab his second Triton Poker title and a $1.01 Million payday. Yu defeated his good friend, Malaysia’s Ivan Leow heads-up!

Talking about his victory run, Yu said – “Ivan is not only a good brother, a buddy, and we play a lot. He’s aggressive – he put me to the test and kept putting the pressure on. I was expecting to play heads up against him, and I got lucky!”

Yu, arguably one of the best nosebleed cash game specialists, has contributed to growing poker in Asia. He has acted as a liaison to bring players of the world together and has been instrumental in introducing poker to high rollers in China, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Yu had won his first Triton title in Event #3: HK$100K Short Deck of the Triton Poker High Roller Series Montenegro in May 2019.

The recent win brought Yu his third-largest career score, and it also happens to be the third time he banked a seven-figure cash prize in a tournament. Currently ranked fourth on the Hong Kong All-time Money List, Yu boasts over $6.255 Million in live tournament winnings.

Interestingly, the final event was initially slated to be a $125K buy-in Short Deck event, but the tournament organizers reduced the buy-in. In another interesting bit of trivia, players from outside Asia won each of the series’ tournaments before Event #5. In contrast, five out of six players on the final table in Event #5 were Asians.

Only 20 players from the 39-entry field survived the Day 1 play, and two players opted to register late on Day 2. Yu was one of the top stacks at the start of the day, and by the time the field whittled down to the final eight players, he held a commanding chip lead.

Paul Phua’s eighth-place elimination formed the unofficial final table with Yu (3,070,000) firmly in the driver’s seat.

You can watch the Day 2 replay below.

Unofficial Final Table Chip Counts

  1. Winfred Yu – 3,070,000
