Triton Series Madrid: Michael Addamo, Paul Phua & Chris Brewer Find Early Success

The Triton Poker Super High Roller Series made its grand debut in Madrid on May 13. The 14-event series is underway at the Casino Gran in Madrid and runs until May 15.

Already three champions have emerged in the series, with Australian poker superstar Michael Addamo (cover-left), Paul Phua (cover-middle) & Chris Brewer (cover-right) winning the first three events!

The high stakes MTT crusher Michael Addamo added another feather to his cap by taking down the series-opener Event#1: €20K NLHE 8-Handed for €478,000 (~$496,922). Natural8 Ambassador Michael Soyza finished runner-up for €332,000 (~$345,143).

Malaysian businessman and poker pro Paul Phua championed Event 2: €30K NLHE 7-Handed for his long-awaited Triton victory and collected the €740,400 (~$769,711) top prize. Nine-time WSOP bracelet winner Erik Seidel came second for €514,800 (~$535,180).

High-stakes cash game pro Chris Brewer came out on top in Event 3: €20K Short Deck Ante-Only, clinching the title for €372,000 (~$387,209). Canadian pro Mike Watson placed runner-up for €269,100 (~$280,102).

Michael Addamo Wins Event 1: €20,000 NLHE 8-Handed For €478,000

The 27-year-old Australian poker pro Michael Addamo is someone synonymous with high roller MTT success. The four-time WSOP bracelet winner recently bagged another trophy to add to his overflowing collection after taking down the series-opener, Event #1: €20K NLHE 8-Handed, at the inaugural Triton Madrid for €478,000 (~$496,922).

Addamo bagged the overnight chip lead on Day 1 among nine survivors. However, the advantage soon whittled away, and his stack was reduced to less than 10 BBs with seven players remaining. But he managed to pick his spots, rebuild, and bounce back to win the title after defeating Natural8 Ambassador Michael Soyza (2nd for €332,000) heads-up.

The win fetched Addamo his 20th live tournament title, boosting his lifetime tally to $18.31 million!

The €20,000 buy-in event attracted 90 hopefuls, collecting €1,800,000 in the prize pool. The top 13 places got paid with a min-cash worth €36,000.

Morten Klein (9th for €50,400), Andriy Lyubovetskiy (10th for €38,700), Cristobal Hidalgo (11th for €38,700), Jeremy Ausmus (12th for €36,000), and Ni Liangce (13th for €36,000) were the notables to post ITM finishes but failed to reach the final table.

The heads-up match between Michael Addamo and Michael Soyza had the latter starting in the driver’s seat with a 2:1 chip lead. But Addamo quickly reversed that and never looked back. In the last hand of the event, Addamo’s went up against Soyza’s . The board threw no surprises and Addamo took down the title.

Paul Phua Champions Event 2: €30,000 NLHE 7-Handed For €740,400

The Malaysian businessman and high stakes regular Paul Phua finally lifted his first Triton trophy after outlasting a 93-entry field in Event 2: €30K NLHE 7-Handed, banking the top prize of €740,400 (~$769,711). The nine-time WSOP bracelet winner Erik Seidel finished runner-up for €514,800 (~$535,180).

The co-founder of the Triton Series, Paul Phua, boasts of 19 ITM finishes in Triton Poker events, the most recent of them coming in the opening event of Triton Madrid, where he placed sixth for €138,500.

According to his Hendon Mob profile, the win improved Phua’s tracked lifetime earnings to just shy of $25 million, enough to put him in 23rd place on poker’s all-time money list.

Phua has had three runner-up scores in past Triton events, and after the event, he said, “I thought the fourth-second place is coming,” and added, “But somehow the cards fell for me.”

As for his heads-up opponent, Phua added, “I knew he’d be tough. Erik’s so experienced, such a great player, but anything can happen.”

Only 21 players from a starting field of 93 runners returned for Day 2, and only 13 among them were assured a piece of the €2,790,000 prize pool. Tom Vogelsang was eliminated on the money bubble.

Phil Ivey (8th for €103,200), Patrik Antonius (9th for €78,100), Danny Tang (10th for €60,000), Kevin Paque (11th for €60,000), Event #1 runner-up finisher Michael Soyza (12th for €56,000), and Fedor Holz (13th for €56,000) made ITM finishes.

On the final hand, Paul Phua moved all-in with , and Erik Seidel called off with for his tournament life. The board ran , giving Phua two pairs- nines and fives – getting him the elusive Triton trophy!

Chris Brewer Wins Event 3: €20,000 Short Deck Ante-Only For €372,000

High-stakes cash game pro Chris Brewer came out on top in Event 3: €20K Short Deck Ante-Only for €372,000 (~$387,209). Canadian pro Mike Watson laced runner-up for €269,100 (~$280,102).

Brewer was among the names called out in the high-stakes cheating scandal. His name was dragged in for allegations of using real-time assistance on GGPoker, which many claimed was the reason he got banned from the site. Brewer denied those charges, instead claiming that it was his use of pre-flop charts that got him banned.

Controversies aside, this latest win got the cash game reg his ninth tournament title, pushing his live tournament tally to $5,126,098.

After the win, Brewer said, “It’s really fun to compete with a lot of great players, and to get lucky and win is great. It really is a lot of fun to be out here with all these people…I always envisioned I could go and play against people for high stakes and win. But I didn’t know what the high stakes actually were. When I was envisioning that, I was envisioning the $10K WSOP. I didn’t imagine these stakes, but I always thought I could make it to the high stakes.”

The €20K buy-in event attracted 62 entries, generating €1,240,000 in the prize pool. The top eight places walked past the money line with a min-cash good for €49,600.

Winfred Yu (8th for €49,600) cashed the event but missed a seat on the final table.

In the last hand of the event, Brewer moved all-in on the turn on the board reading . He held for a jack-high straight. Watson tank-called with and had outs, but the on the river wasn’t one of them.
