In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week’s top stories!

This past week has not been very encouraging, with India struggling to fight the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The country recently touched another grim milestone as the overall deaths in the pandemic crossed the 2-Lakh mark. Over 3.60 Lakhs new cases were reported in the last 24 hours in yet another single-day record.

Reminiscent of last year, the second wave has brought back lockdowns in some parts of the country. The coastal state of Goa, which also happens to be the poker capital of India, saw the state government announce a weekend lockdown from April 29 to May 3. The live poker industry that had been gradually getting back to its feet since November last year has once again been brought to a standstill.

In the face of live poker shutting down, online poker is once again starting to witness a surge in traffic like last year. As always, the biggest-guaranteed event headlining the weekly action was Spartan Poker’s The Millionaire. The ₹5,500 entry buy-in event registered 2,078 entries resulting in a guarantee-smashing ₹1.04 Crores prize pool. The mystery user Kickercards won the event for a colossal ₹17.39 Lakhs payout. Uttam Kumar Sinha came in second for ₹9.53 Lakhs.

The mystery user ‘Kickercards’ was the top scorer this week. Still, since the player has chosen to remain anonymous, the “PokerGuru Star of the Week’ title passes on to seasoned pro Dhaval Mudgal. The musician and poker pro shipped Spartan Poker’s Destiny on Wednesday for ₹6.79 Lakhs and picked up a few more deep runs to accumulate ₹9.34 Lakhs in total winnings through the week.

Pranav Bagai, Gaurav Kaul, Shagun Jain, and Young Gun Sahil Chutani were among the other big scorers this week.

Speaking of the online poker boom, things will get pretty crazy in the coming months, starting off with Spartan Poker’s The Millionaire Series 2.0 coming up ahead from May 3 to 9. The week-long series will feature 17 tournaments and promises ₹5 Crores in prize pool guarantees!

Next up will be the National Poker Series (NPS). The series was supposed to be hosted live last year before the global pandemic derailed those plans. The NPS will now be making a virtual debut on PokerBaazi from June 13 to 27. The 64-event long series will offer ₹15 Crores in guarantees and ₹1 Crore in leaderboard prizes.

While online tournament action will be getting intense in the coming weeks, cash game enthusiasts need not be disheartened. NostraPoker has been hosting its PLO Leaderboard since April 21. The 10-day long leaderboard race will conclude on April 30, awarding ₹5 Lakhs to the top 10 ranked players.

Online poker seems to be prospering globally. Another big news saw WSOP reaffirming its association with GGPoker by announcing a packed online calendar of events. Starting off with the WSOP Super Circuit Online Series (May 1-May 30) on GGPoker/Natural8, the action will then move towards the 2021 WSOP Online series, with the domestic leg on WSOP.com (July 1-August 1) and the international leg on GGPoker/Natural8 (August 1-September 12). The online leg of the events will conclude with the WSOP Winter Online Super Circuit on GGPoker/Natural8, the dates for which are yet to be announced. The WSOP had previously announced a tentative schedule for the WSOP annual live series from September 30 to November 23.

In other news, India’s second-biggest online gaming company, Mobile Premier League (MPL), acquired the Delhi-based GamingMonk and launched Esports Arena.

PokerGO has announced the dates of its marquee live events this year, branding them as part of the new PokerGO Tour. Simultaneously, it has launched a new global poker ranking system to determine the best high-stakes MTT player.

Though live poker may be out of bounds in India, some international stops seem to be going ahead with their respective series. The LIPS Nevada State Ladies Poker Championship Main Event recently crowned a champion in Mikella Pedretti for $11,999.

The first-ever WPT DeepStacks Hanoi Main Event was championed by Nguyn Văn Phinh for VNđ 842,000,000 (~$36,522). He also won the ‘Player of the Series’ (POS) title.

With the COVID cases in the country rising exponentially, death tolls have also been peaking. The poker community received the shocking news of the untimely death of 32-year-old player Aman Kejriwal, who sadly succumbed to the deadly virus on April 24. At this time of crisis, we urge all of you to be extra careful. Stay safe, stay at home.

Online Railbird Report

With live poker getting pushed to the backburner, online poker witnessed a steady increase in traffic throughout the week. Headlining the weekly marquess was, as usual, Spartan Poker’s The Millionaire. The eight-figure guarantee tourney was championed by the mystery user ‘Kickercards’ for a whopping ₹17.39 Lakhs. Ideally, The Millionaire champion should have been our “PokerGuru Star of the Week.” However, since the player has chosen to remain anonymous, the title for this week has been bestowed upon veteran pro Dhaval Mudgal!

Poker Sports League CEO Pranav Bagai was also among the big scorers this week. He took down Spartan Poker’s The Elite for ₹7.95 Lakhs and wrapped up the week with ₹8.24 Lakhs in earnings.
