To connect with Asian audiences, the World Poker Tour (WPT), in association with Chinese Texas Hold’em Poker Association (CTP), announced the details of its first-ever stop in Taiwan which is scheduled to run from July 12 to 22.

WPT will set foot on Taiwanese soil for the very first time in Taipei City, and the series will be hosted at a property belonging to CTP. In an earlier interview with PokerGuru, the founder of CTP, David Tai had revealed his ambitious plans of getting global giants like the WPT, and World Series of Poker (WSOP) to host tournaments in Taipei and his dreams have come true!

Poker in Taiwan

Up until recently, poker was considered illegal in Taiwan, and as a result, a large portion of the global poker community was unaware of the thriving poker scene in the country. Following the relentless efforts of David Tai, poker was legalized in the country and eventually caught the attention of one of the big Asian brands – Asian Poker Tour (APT). The inaugural APT Taiwan series was held at the Chinese Texas Hold’em Association (CTP) Club from February 20 to March 3.

One of the latest poker tournament series to be hosted in Taiwan was the J88Poker Tour. J88Poker had held its first series in Taiwan in December, last year. The second edition of the series, which had kicked off on March 29, concluded yesterday.

Tai perfectly encapsulated the ambiance of the country saying, “Taiwan is a great country, and people here are filled with passion, with lots of shopping and fine dining places, along with amazing poker. Streets here are clean and safe, with heightened security. All of these attractions make Taiwan one of the hottest travelling spots in the world!”

The series is set to feature buy-ins ranging from TWD 4,000 (₹8,983) up to TWD 55,000 (₹1,23,520) and the star attraction of the festival, the TWD 30,000 (₹67,374) buy-in WPT Main Event is slated to be held from July 17 to 21. The entire schedule will be released by the WPT shortly.

Talking about WPT’s recent association with CTP, VP of Global Tour Management, Angelica Hael said, “Chinese Texas Hold’em Poker Association is an exciting venue and the World Poker Tour looks forward to partnering with their fantastic team. The WPT continues to expand into the Asia-Pacific and WPT Taiwan will be another spectacular event to highlight the best the region has to offer.”

Future of Poker in Asia

For the last few years, WPT has been steadily increasing its presence in the Asian continent. After making Japan the foundation stone of its ‘Asia Swing’ in 2017, WPT has continued to add more stops in the Asia-Pacific region including India in 2017, Vietnam and Korea in 2018 and now Taiwan in 2019.

The inclusion of Taiwan into the WPT circuit will act as a massive boost for not only the poker fraternity in the country but also for the Asian poker circuit. In fact, with Taiwan just being approximately five hours away by flight from India, Indian poker players now have the choice of playing at another attractive poker destination.
