Day 3 of the WPT Borgata Poker Open Main Event began with 150 hopefuls but the day`s onslaught cut the field down to just 31 players.
It was a royal day for Jean “Prince” Gaspard (cover image) who rode all the way home with a massive chip lead. Having started the day with 302,000 chips, Gaspard slowly and steadily worked his way up the ladder to grab the lead with 5,464,000 chips.
Quite some distance away is Gaspard`s closest competitor, the start of day chip leader Blake Boh, who sits with 2,951,000 chips. Boh created quite a stir in the tournament area when a medical emergency required him to leave the tables not once but twice. Despite his medical troubles, Boh kept coming back to the tables and well his resolve paid off.
Rounding out the top three chip stacks after Day 3 is circuit regular Zo Karim, with 2,260,000 chips.
The day however was not too kind to Team Mentor Aditya ‘Intervention’ Agarwal. The bad beat story continued for Intervention who was on the receiving end of two particularly brutal beats on Day 2 and the rest as they say is history. Intervention busted the tournament in 35th place for a payday of $15,109!
We were lucky enough to catch the Team Mentor for a brief chat, who spoke to us about some key hands of the day, “I had 900k at 5-10k even after loosing a 450k flip aq vs jj. Then a hand plays out where a guy raises to 23k utg, 3 people call. I call from big blind, flop opens 5 7 9r, checks to button he bets 90k, I call everyone folds. Turn Q, I lead 140k he shoves for 481k. He has 79ss, I have 68 and river opens a 9”.
Some further prodding reveals that the “guy” is actually Blake Boh.“Yea Blake Boh got me, he is the one who cracked my kk with his qq in Miami too. He got really sick yesterday and had to leave the table, came back played 6 hands and had to be wheeled out again. Then comes back and f*** me,” said Aditya.
It was the eventual chip leader Gaspard who ousted Intervention from the tournament. In level 23, Gaspard raises the button for 51,000 and Intervention in the big blind calls. The flop opens and Gaspard places another 25,000 bet. Intervention tanks for a while before moving all in with , for a pair of tens. But unfortunately, Gaspard turns over for a pair of queens. The turn and the river are no help to Intervention, who is sent to the rails in 35th place.
Overall it was a pretty eventful day at Borgata with the first 30 eliminations walking out without making the money, before the bubble finally burst on the 121st place bust out. It was Tom Dobrilovic, who ran top pair into an over pair to become the last player to be sent off empty handed from the tournament.
Some of the notables who made the money, but failed to survive the day include reigning WPT Player of the Year Mukul Pahuja (104th), Ebony Kenney (91st), Russell Thoma (86th), Mike Sexton (85th), Byron Kaverman (64th), John Racener (62nd), Dan O’Brien (53rd), partypoker’s Jamie Kerstetter (52nd), and Ryan Riess (39th).
While some notables who will be beginning Day 3 action include two-time WPT champion Cornel Cimpan, Darren Elias, Justin Zaki, Barry Shulman, Erik Cajelais, and local favorite Matt Glantz.
Day 4 kicks off at 12 pm local time today where the plan is to play down to the final table.
