This past Sunday saw a whirlwind of action at Casino Deltin Royale that played host to the 2018 World Poker Tour (WPT) India. The much-talked about 55K Main Event reached Day 2 with 241 survivors from a record-breaking 679 entries coming back for the final stretch. After 15 levels of play, only nine players were standing in contention for the title and the ₹66,20,541 top prize.

The series had kicked off on November 13 with much fanfare and the ₹20K Kickoff NLHE and ₹25K Big Bounty NLH pulled in considerably higher turnouts than their inaugural runs. However, the field sizes in the ₹35K Superstack and ₹100K High Roller fell short of last years mark. By all measures, WPT India has been a raging success, most notably for the record-breaking numbers (697 entries) in the Main Event!

The Main Event is down to the nine-handed final table with Deepak Singh leading the lot with a stack of 4,595,000. Singh entered the Main Event on Day 1B and advanced to Day 2 with a below-average stack of 41,500. Day 2 saw a complete turn-around in Singh`s fortunes, who kept improving his stack and knocked out two players on the final hand of Day 2 to clinch the chip lead.

Singh will not have an easy ride today as close on his coattails is Adda52 pro Amit Jain (4,500,000). The competition doesn`t end there as others like Harsh Dembla (3,050,000), Sahil Mahboobani (2,755,000), Kanishka Upreti (1,665,000) and Akshay Nasa (1,660,000) are all tough contenders for the title.

Day 2 saw a lot of dreams crashing and many prominent names fell short of the money line including Paawan Bansal, Dhaval Mudgal, Kalyan Chakravarthy and Rubin Labroo.

At the same time, a number of well-known pros scored, like World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner Aditya Sushant (33rd for ₹1.72 Lakhs), Devesh Thapar (32nd for ₹1.72 Lakhs), Shuchi Chamaria (47th for ₹1.34 Lakhs), Anup Palod (40th for ₹1.53 Lakhs) and Niranjan NJ (14th for ₹4.38 Lakhs) were among the notables who posted scores in the event.

Day 2 of the Main Event saw 241 survivors from the three starting flights coming together for the first time and leading this motley lot was Anup Palod (296,500), followed by Niranjan NJ (284,500) and Pranay Kapoor (231,500).

Dhaval Mudgal, Paawan Bansal and Rubin Labroo were among the players to hit the rail early, while Palodwas eliminated in 40th place by Rohit Mishra.

One of the most remarkable journeys in the biggest event hosted on Indian soil has been of Deepak Singh, who came to 2018 WPT India after winning the Go Goa tournament on Adda52. Singh had only 41,500 when Day 2 began but he clawed his way to the top eliminating several players to the rail along the way. He eliminated Ravi Shankar Metlapalli (30th for ₹1.72 Lakhs) chipping up to 765,000.

Singh also orchestrated the elimination of Day 1A chip leader Niranjan NJ (14th for ₹4.38 Lakhs) with his pocket sevens cracking Niranjan’spocket sixes. On the final hand of the night, Singh scored a double elimination that saw him surging to the top of the rankings. Singh open raised for 135,000 from under the gun and Rohit Mishra (11th for ₹5.49 Lakhs) re-raised all in for 410,000. Yuvraj Chaudhary (10th for ₹5.49 Lakhs) moved all-in behind them for 855,000 and Singh called. All the three players tabled their cards.

The board ran and Singh’s two pair relegated Mishra and Choudharyto the rail.

Adda52 pro Amit Jain entered Day 2 with a stack of 172,500 and kept busy from the get-go. In a three-way pot, Jain’s pocket jacks dominated Sirjan Singh’s pocket nines and Mohit Gupta’s ace-king suited and with that pot, Jain scalped two players at one go. Jain was on an elimination spree as he took out Krishna Kumar (21st for ₹2.99 Lakhs) towards the fag end of the play. His list of victims also included Ashish Kaushik (12th for ₹5.49 Lakhs).

Akshay Nasa’s recent dazzling form has fared him well. He started the year with an impressive run in the Asia Poker League (APL) and continued the form in the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Manila. In October Nasa picked up his maiden international title in the ₫ 4,400,000 No Limit Hold’em – DeepstackTubo at the WPT Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh for₹4.47 Lakhs. Nasa qualified through Day 1B as chip leader with 213,000 in chips. While he was not the top stack at the start of Day 2, he played consistently and even orchestrated the elimination of Karan Kakkad (24th for ₹2.53 Lakhs) with his set of threes against Kakkad’s pocket nines. He missed out on winning the WPT title in the ₹35K Superstack, where he finished 15th for ₹1.28 Lakhs.

The bubble approached at Level 19 and the unfortunate money bubble tag fell upon Jayjit Ray. After losing a massive pot to EkaVedantham, Jayjit Ray had only 38,000 left and was then eliminated on the bubble by Romit Advani who held against his and hit a winning flush on the board .

The remaining 88 players were in the money and the first player to be eliminated after the bubble was Sanjay Taneja (88th for ₹89,278). Thereafter, a number of favorites who had survived the tough fields on the starting flights saw their hopes dashed.

Day 2 chip leader Anup Palod’s (40th for ₹1.53 Lakhs) dream run was ended rather early when Rohit Mishra moved all in preflop for 310,000 on the button and Palodput his tournament life at risk from late position. Mishra tabled against Palod’s and the board gave Mishra the pot.

Some big names who made the money line were Eka Vedantham (18th for ₹3.63 Lakhs), Ujjwal Narwal (26th for ₹2.11 Lakhs), Young Gun Devesh Thapar (32nd for ₹1.72 Lakhs), WSOP bracelet winner Aditya Sushant (33rd for ₹1.72 Lakhs), Tarun Goyal (36th for ₹1.72 Lakhs), Kartik Ved (37th for ₹1.52 Lakhs), Vinod Megalmani (45th for ₹1.52 Lakhs) Shuchi Chamaria (47th for ₹1.34 Lakhs),Young Gun Abhinav Iyer (52nd for ₹1.34 Lakhs), Mani Singh (55th for ₹1.20 Lakhs) and Arjun Arora (60th for ₹1.20 Lakhs).
