WSOP 2021: Leo Margets Ships Event #83: The Closer to Become the First Female to Win an Open-Entry Event This Year, PokerGuru Ambassador Kartik Ved Finishes 41st

Spain’s Leo Margets has become the first female player to win an open-entry event at the 2021 WSOP as the poker pro took down Event #83: $1,500 The Closer for a cash prize of $376,850 and her first WSOP gold bracelet! The Day 1 chip leader Alex Kulev placed runner-up for $232,920.

The Winamax Team Pro Margets, who had previously finished 27th in the 2009 WSOP Main Event for $352,832, in her post-match interview, said, “Usually, it’s going be harder for a woman to get a bracelet because we are few (in poker).”

“I hope there is one day when there isn’t such an issue. It shouldn’t be an issue. I you like it, go ahead, even if you’re a man, a woman, or a monkey!” she added.

PokerGuru Ambassador Kartik Ved was the sole Indian player returning on Day 2 and placed 41st for $8,550 (~₹6.36 Lakhs), posting his third ITM finish at the series. The former bracelet winner had entered the final day with a 28 BB stack (835,000). He lost a crucial hand with against Benjamin Underwood’s pocket aces that all but ended his hunt for a second career bracelet.

Kartik Ved’s previous ITM finishes at the series include:

Several Indian players posted scores in the event that has been a stronghold for Team India in recent years. Ankit Ahuja (47th for $4,865~₹3.61 Lakhs), Neel Joshi (67th place for $3,890~₹2.89 Lakhs), Muskan Sethi (159th for $2,400~₹1.78 Lakhs) cashed on Day 1B while Kalyan Chakravarthy (47th for $3,891~₹2.89 Lakhs), and Sriharsha Doddapaneni (70th for $3,217~₹2.39 Lakhs) posted ITM finishes on Day 1A.

The $1,500 buy-in event logged in 1,903 entries across two starting flights to generate a juicy $2.54 Million prize pool. All 63 returning players were assured a $6,265 payday.

Former WSOP bracelet winners Stephen Song (3rd for $172,855) and Chris Moorman (8th for $44,740) also FT-ed the tourney!

Kenny Hallaert (13th for $22,310), Michael Wang (18th for $14,740), Marshall White (37th for $8,550), Brett Apter (45th for $8,550), Mitchell Halverson (47th for $7,280), Joao Simao (56th for $6,265), and James Alexander (63rd for $6,265) were other notables who posted ITM finishes.
