Indian-origin Jasthi Kumar (cover image) may be a recreational player, still, he is a familiar face at the World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) stops in Thunder Valley, and San Jose stops where he has put in quite a lot of volume these last few years. Even though Kumar, who is an IT professional, is yet to win a WSOP bracelet, his poker resume boasts of a long litany of WSOPC scores that till very recently included two circuit gold rings.

Coming into the latest WSOPC stop that is currently underway at Harvey’s Lake Tahoe, Kumar scored a 25th place finish in Event #2 $400 NLHE (1 Day) before entering Event #4: $400 NLHE. Dominating the 126-strong field in the event, Kumar came out on top to clinch the title. While the $11,328 cash prize that accompanied the title is only an add-on for Kumar who has over $1 Million in recorded live cashes, what’s significant is that Kumar collected his third WSOPC gold ring for his win!

“Those (trophies and rings) are more important to me, otherwise I wouldn’t play these tournaments. I would like to play bigger tournaments, but I cannot take off from work,” Kumar said in his winner interview.

Kumar had to fight hard in his heads-up match with Sergio Vargas. Though Kumar had the chip advantage for the most part that included the heads-up as well, Vargas just wasn’t ready to give up without a fight. At one point, Vargas was struggling with a 10-to-1 deficit, but he came back from the dead to give Kumar a run for the title.

“He was behind every single time he was all in and he won all four times. From the time we were in the money, it was a smooth ride, but before that, I was struggling. It feels great – really great. A win is a win,” Kumar said.

The top 19 finishers earned a cut from the $41,580 prize pool that included circuit regulars like Jack Reed (13th for $690), Vincent Moscati (12th for $798), and Jed Hoffman (17th for $615).

The field was whittled down to the ten-handed final table towards the latter part of Day 1 with Kumar (414,000) leading the charge, and Jerod Smith (300,000), Adam Owen (271,000) in pursuit.

Final Table Recap

Dan Barker was the first one out in 10th place. Shane Gonzales, Jerome Stenehjem, and Rudy Sisson were the next to go in ninth to seventh place, respectively.

Adam Owen was eliminated in sixth place, bringing the field down to the five players who were asked to bag their stacks for the day.

The start-of-day chip leader, Kumar, hadn’t given up the lead and bagged a stack of 817,000 to remain a reasonable distance ahead of his closest competitors Jerod Smith (515,000) and Jon Rhamey (375,000).

Day 2 Recap

Steven Sanzaro was sporting the shortest stack on Day 2, and unsurprisingly, he left in fifth place.

With Jon Rhamey and Jerod Smith hitting the rail in fourth and third place respectively, it was down to the heads-up match between Kumar and Sergio Vargas.

Vargas proved a resilient foe, and even though Kumar eventually prevailed, it wasn’t without a fierce battle. Ultimately, it was Kumar who denied Vargas his first WSOPC ring to win himself a third WSOPC gold ring!
