This Week in Poker: August 10 – 16

In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!

Live poker has exploded globally, and Team India is in the thick of the action virtually at every major stop! We’re coming off one of the most significant weeks for India in the international live circuit. Playing across three different live stops in Spain, Vietnam, and Cambodia, our Indian pros reeled in an incredible six titles and multiple standout finishes!

Poker coach Abhishek Rathod was hands down the biggest chartbuster. Based out of Sweden, the primarily online MTT pro made the trip to Barcelona, where he took down the €550 buy-in ESPT Cup for a career-best €103,712 (~₹83.78 Lakhs), picking up his first live title in nearly a decade. Setting a tall benchmark for the Indian pros, Rathod is deservedly our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”

Spartan Poker Team Pro Nikita Luther and Kavin Shah were among the Indians who picked up scores at the EPT Barcelona this week.

Closer to home in the Asian stops, Team India had another hugely successful outing at the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Ho Chi Minh. Kurukshetra, Harayana’s Amit Kaushik, was the standout performer. He finished third in the Main Event for a personal-best VND 1,691,700,000 (~₹57.34 Lakhs). Vietnam’s Tran Tuan Anh lifted the trophy for VND 2,127,900,000 (~$91,500). Kaushik’s deep run vaulted him to the third rank on the APT Player of the Series (POS) rankings, with Phan Huu Minh Tri topping the standings.

Our Indian challengers have already bagged an impressive five titles at the ongoing WPT Prime Cambodia. Topping them all is Young Gun Shardul Parthasarathi, who took down the $5,300 buy-in Super High Roller for his second live title and $68,922 (~₹54.88 Lakhs) in prize money.

PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot (Won Nagaworld Superstack for ₹10.25 Lakhs), Kunal Patni (Won Deepstack NLH for ₹6.23 Lakhs), Spartan Poker Team Pro Zarvan Tumboli (WPT PLO for ₹5.55 Lakhs), and Akshay Kapoor (Won NLH Single Day for ₹5.15 Lakhs) and are the other Indians who tasted success at WPT Prime Cambodia.

Moreover, poker pro Kunal Patni bagged the chip lead on Day 1A of the $500K GTD WPT Prime Cambodia Main Event. The first of the three starting flights registered 264 entries, and 33 players advanced to Day 2.

While the live-action has been electrifying, the digital felts have also gone on overdrive with back-to-back tournament offerings and cash game promotions.

With the country celebrating its 75 years of Independence, most sites dished out extensive guarantees, offers, and freerolls. Spartan Poker’s all-new Freedom Celebration Series set the bar high, and Young Gun Siddharth Karia captured the FCS Main Event title for ₹21.30 Lakhs, netting ₹23 Lakhs across his weekly run.

Alok Birewar, PokerGuru Ambassador Vishal Bajaj, Shashank Jain, Rubin Labroo, Anish Arora, Arsh Grover, Mohit Mehta, Arun Sriram, and Aman Parakh were others who topped the online charts this past week.

Pocket52’s ‘Jeetne ki Azaadi’ campaign runs throughout August, offering over 200 high-value MTTs, promising ₹3.80+ Crores in guaranteed prizes. Running as a part of this campaign is the fifth edition of the Pocket Poker Championship (PPC). The ₹1.61 Crores GTD festival will run till August 21. THE PATRIOT Leaderboard is tracking the ITM finishers in specified events and will award an additional ₹7 Lakhs in prizes to the series’ most consistent players.

Sunday, which was also the eve of India`s 75th Independence Anniversary, was a proud one for Team India for one of the country`s foremost poker coaches, Abhishek Rathod (cover image), became the first Indian to lift the coveted PokerStars Spadie trophy at the ongoing series.

Dario de Paz (2nd for €142,691), Andrea Cardinali (3rd for €127,197), and Konstantin Farber (4th for €70,630) were the other beneficiaries of the deal.

The former PokerBaazi Team Pro Rathod is predominantly an online grinder, as he confirmed to us later, “I don’t play much live poker. I prefer the comfort of home. So always good to win something live.”

Apart from Rathod, Mayank Saxena (197th for €1,500) was the only other Indian player to cross the money line.

The €550 buy-in event – one of ten featured events on the schedule, collected a massive €1,588,800 prize pool and paid out 501 places with a min-cash worth €850.

Spartan Poker Team Pro Nikita Luther, Sumit Asrani, Rishabh Vekaria, and Bharath Janardhan are some other Indians attending the series.
