Daily Majors: Akash Malik, Avish Sharma, Yash Shrivastava & Sanjay Gupta Ship the Friday Majors

The live poker action in Goa has reached a new crescendo with the explosive comeback of the India Poker Championship (IPC)! The series which returned to the coastal state after a nearly four-year-long hiatus has managed to bring together the majority of the domestic circuit, leading to several attendance records being shattered. While the live action has been in peak form, the action on the virtual felts has slowed down considerably, with most of the big guarantee events on the premier online poker sites registering overlays. In fact, even the IPC sponsors, Spartan Poker, suffered significant shortfalls in both its Friday high-value tournaments, along with the other leading site’s like PokerBaazi, Adda52 and PokerStars India that had to shell out money to fill in overlays.

The biggest guaranteed tournament last night was Spartan Poker’s The Elite ₹20 Lakhs GTD which had an overlay of around ₹1.30 Lakhs after logging in 170 entries (80 unique, 46 re-entries and 44 rebuys). Akash ‘utgwithyourmum’ Malik juggernaut his way to the top of the field, collecting a winner’s payday of ₹4.28 Lakhs. Sanjay ‘sanjayg007’ Gupta took down the other high-value event on Spartan Poker last night, TGIF ₹10 Lakhs GTD, that suffered from a ₹1.32 Lakhs overlay, and walked away with a ₹1.40 Lakhs payday.

The overlays on Adda52 continue as the site’s Friday signature event, the Whale – 6 Max ₹15 Lakhs GTD, registered a minor shortfall of ₹61,500 through 210 entries (135 unique and 75 re-entries). ‘DHIRENDRA100’ emerged as the eventual winner and took home ₹4.17 Lakhs for his efforts.

On PokerBaazi, Avish ‘thehorse7’ Sharma raced to the top of a 203-strong field (102 unique and 101 re-entries) to capture the winner’s mantel in the Fri-Yay ₹10 Lakhs GTD for 2.41 Lakhs. Notably, Kavish ‘Narcos’ Kukreja who had finished fifth in the IPC ₹10K Freezeout for ₹2.03 Lakhs just two days back, final-tabled the event, finishing eighth for ₹32,200. Another tournament on the site, Friday SuperStack ₹3 Lakhs GTD was taken down by Aditya ‘adit11’ Kulkarni for ₹77,250.

The Uppercut – Progressive KO ₹8 Lakhs GTD on PokerStars India was championed by Yash ‘hasyY@$#116’ Shrivastava who added ₹1.60 Lakhs to his bankroll.

‘Fireman’ claimed the title and top prize of ₹65,000 in 9stacks’ daily major StackUp @ 8PM ₹2.50 Lakhs GTD.

Meanwhile, Poker Dangal’s Dangal Friday ₹1 Lakhs GTD was taken down by ‘britishraaj’ for ₹28,150.

This Week in Poker: April 24 – 30

In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring you the weekly round-up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week’s top stories

The last week of April was packed to the boot with electrifying poker action both on and off the felts! Let us take a look back at the week that was.

The week took off in grand style with the PokerBaazi Premier League (PPL) Special Edition. The much-awaited Day 2 of The Endeavour ₹50 Lakhs GTD played out on April 23 with Kanav ‘sokopa’ Parwal emerging the champion taking home a colossal ₹11.17 Lakhs. Anjali ‘Smoothie12’ Kochhar became the first female champion at the series when she took down PPL#25: HighRoller 6-Max ₹50 Lakhs GTD, collecting ₹16.01 Lakhs in first-place prize money.

However, the biggest event of the series was PPL#36: The MoneyMaker₹1 Crore GTD that pulled in a total of 1,341 entries (752 unique and 589 re-entries), smashing its guarantee to collect ₹1.34 Crores in prize money. Poker veteran and high stakes cash game specialist Raman ‘ifryu’ Gujral captured the title with ease, bagging a massive score of ₹22.52 Lakhs in the process. Gujral is, therefore, our “PokerGuru Star of the Week.”

Ankit Jajodia eventually walked away the PPL Player of the Series title after a hard-fought battle with Gaurav Sood.

Evidently, the past week has been a phenomenal one for online poker. Besides PokerBaazi’s PPL Special Edition, upcoming online poker site, UMA Poker hosted its Redemption Series from April 19-28 offering over ₹2 Crores in prize pool guarantees. The central attraction of the series was the site’s first-ever ₹50 Lakhs GTD, Redemption Main Event, which drew in 435 entries. Kshitij ‘MP3player’ Nirjar topped the field, pocketing ₹8.50 Lakhs in the process.

Up-and-coming online poker site, Khelo365 has announced its biggest-ever upgrade to date which will include an avant-garde HTML5 software update, along with many other exciting features that will be rolled out sometime in May.

Meanwhile, MadOverPoker (MOP) has also announced its latest cash game challenge – Summer Madness Fly to Vietnam. Running from May 3 to June 15, the series will offer ₹22 Lakhs in Leaderboard prizes along with packages to Vietnam.

Not to be outdone, PokerStars India released the schedule of its inaugural India Summer Championship of Online Poker (INSCOOP). Slated to run from May 13-27, the series will feature 92 events, offering the largest-ever prize pool guarantee of ₹4.16 Crores for an online series on PokerStars India.

Fast-growing poker site, 9stacks is the latest brand to give in to the fantasy gaming craze with the launch of its fantasy gaming site Faboom in association with social gaming app called Router.

Live tournament action in Asia has been dominated by the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Philippines that has moved into its second week now. Indian challenger Yasheel Doddanavar was seen gunning through the PHP 10 Million GTD (₹1.34 Crores) Main Event. Doddanavar entered via Day 1A and took his fight all the way till Day 3 where he earned a 15th place payout for PHP 306,600 (~ ₹4.11 Lakhs). The latest winner coming off the APT felts is local talent Christopher Mateo who commandeered himself into victory at the Main Event after reaching an ICM deal with Singapore’s Lu Zhenghao. Mateo won his third APT trophy and PHP 5,085,400 (~₹68.13 Lakhs) in prize money.

The other notable series that is presently underway is the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo Casino European Poker Tour (EPT) which began on April 26 and has already crowned winners in 11 events. Indian player Ankit Ahuja participated in the €2,200 French National High Roller where he managed to cross the money line and finished 62nd for €3,700 (~₹2.90 Lakhs). Indian-origin player Vamshi Vandanapu also final tabled the EPT Cup event, placing fifth for €8,060 (~₹6.28 Lakhs). With the Day 2 proceedings of the €5,300 EPT Main Event already in progress, the series still has a few more events left to play out.

Coming back to the domestic front, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Valmiki Naik and Pradeep Padgaonkar accused the Goa’s ruling and opposition parties of facilitating the hiring of Nepalis in casinos, thereby negatively impacting the job prospects of the locals. The Indian Indirect Tax department has also started questioning the top fantasy gaming companies to clarify possible revenue leakage in the manner these platforms calculate and pay GST.

Nevertheless, domestic railbirds still have a lot to look forward to with the DPT Colossus Super High Roller Series scheduled to kick-off tomorrow with the action continuing all the way till May 5 in Goa.

On the international front, partypoker Grand Prix Germany, Rozvadov (May 6-13), 888poker LIVE Barcelona (May 16-27) will keep us entertained throughout May, while the world’s biggest poker festival, the 50th World Series of Poker (WSOP) will commence on May 28. With the WSOP also announcing that the 41-event long WSOPE will be hosted at the largest casino in Europe – King’s Resort, Rozvadov – from September 26 till October 14, there’s a lot of exciting poker action coming up.

Nitish Gupta Takes Down The MoneyMaker ₹1 Crore GTD For ₹32.63 Lakhs, Ramlakhan Meena Tops PokerBaazi’s PPL Overall Yearly Leaderboard

The PokerBaazi Premier League (PPL) 2018 has been a marathon of high-value tournaments that has kept the players on their toes and the audience on the edge of their seats! After Spring, Summer and Autumn editions, the last series in the PPL line-up was the Winter’18 Edition which kicked off on December 10 and ran till December 16.

While the Winter Edition was stacked with exciting events, it was The MoneyMaker ₹1 Crore GTD that was invariably the centre of attraction. The event pulled a total of 1,332 entries (742 unique and 590 re-entries) which smashed the ₹1 Crore guarantee and collected ₹1.33 Crores in total. It was Nitish ‘Somnath’ Gupta who obliterated the playing field and added ₹32.63 Lakhs to his bankroll.

Gupta, who was our first PokerGuru Young Gun way back in 2013 had posted his career-first live score in the ₹12,000 NLHE – Bounty at the PokerGuru Tour Season 2 – March Edition, where he finished third for ₹1,10,000. He has clearly come a long way since and has spent the better part of the past few years playing high-stakes cash games.

The final table of PPL#31 The MoneyMaker ₹1 Crore GTD was crowded with regulars from the domestic circuit and the lineup featured names like Gaurav ‘gaug17’ Sood (5th for ₹5.99 Lakhs) and Guruprasad ‘fish_calling’ Gupta (8th for ₹2.66 Lakhs). But Gupta’s ultimate showdown was against winner of the 2018 APPT Manila ₱15,000 NLH Turbo Chiraag ‘Versutus’ Patel. In the end Gupta prevailed to become the new MoneyMaker champion!

However, one of the most prolific players throughout the series was Sameer ‘Killersam’ Tavanandi. Not only did he win the PPL #6 ₹1,100 NLHE Superstack ₹5 Lakhs GTD (₹1.30 Lakhs) and PPL#34 Time Bomb ₹1 Lakhs GTD (₹19,025), he scored in an incredible 11 other events, out of the 34 total events he clocked in at the series. It`s therefore no surprise that he was adjudicated the PPL Winter’18 Leaderboard winner.

Speaking of champions, one player synonymous with consistency is Ramlakhan ‘Hitler’ Meena. This 25-year-old pro from Jaipur has made a habit out of topping the PPL leaderboards as back in June, the had created history by winning two back-to-back PPL leaderboards (Spring and Summer editions). He worked his magic yet again and just about edged ahead of Tavanandi to top the PPL Overall Yearly Leaderboard. His efforts and perseverance through the year earned him a brand-new Harley Davidson bike!
