2015 ACOP: Dong Guo Wins Warm-up; Thrilling Action Expected At Main Event With Ronaldo, Aditya Agarwal & Other Top Pros Joining The Action

It’s set to be a highly exciting day at the ongoing 2015 ACOP at PokerStars LIVE Macau, with Day 1A of the HK $100,000 Main Event slated to begin today. From the west, we have iconic footballer Ronaldo joining the Main Event, in his role as Team PokerStars Brand Ambassador.

Indian railbirds will have much to cheer for with Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal, India’s pioneering poker pro also making his 2015 ACOP debut at the Main Event. PokerStars Extreme Giveaway winner – Anant P will be the other Indian player joining the Main Event.

Meanwhile, Sunday Nov 8 saw the culmination of Event 7 – HK $25,000 ACOP Warm Up with China`s Dong Guo (cover image) emerging as the champion. Day 2 of Event 8 – HK $250,000 High Roller was the other headline event that played down to its final table yesterday.


2015 ACOP HK $100,000 Main Event

The 2015 ACOP highlight HK $100,000 buy-in Main Event Day 1A begins today at 3pm local time. The action is set to be a thrilling one with several notables lined up to participate. Debuting in Macau will be Brazilian football legend Ronaldo. For our Indian viewers, all eyes will be on Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal. Anant P and Kunal Patni are other Indians expected to be joining in. The event features a whopping HK $15,000,000 prize pool guarantee.


Event 7: HK $25,000 ACOP Warm-Up

45-year old Chinese player Dong Guo beat the 256 runners in the Warm Up event for the lion’s share of HK $1,370,860 (US $135,000), as well as his first Spadie. Only 27 players cashed from the HK $5,711,360 prize pool.

Kunal Patni had entered on Day 1, but was busted early on.

Event 8: HK $250,000 High Roller Day 2

Day 2 of the High Roller saw an additional eight entries through late registrations. These joined the 39 survivors from Day 1, taking the total number of entries to 63.

At the end of the day, only seven players remained, all who have made it to the money. The eventual winner will take home the largest piece of HK $4,890,600 (US $650,000) from the created prize pool of HK $14,817,600 (US $1,911,564.94).

Bubble boy turned out to be American Carlos Chadha, who risked his entire stack with ace-ten. Wang Zuo’s pocket queens proved stronger, with a board that had no favors for Chaddha and as he exited all the remaining were in the money with the min-cash being HK $889,000 (US $118,000).

Pre-bubble, a number of notables hit the rails and these included John Juanda, Shawn Buchanan, Erik Seidel, Kitty Kuo, Jonathan Karamalikis and Sam Trickett. Day 1 chip leader Allan Bedwick was one among those who busted.

Thai player Phanlert Sukonthachartnant with a massive stack of 4,325,000 emerged the chip leader at the end of Day 2.

2015 ACOP: Kunal Patni Min-Cashes Event 6, High Roller Begins & Action Set To Escalate With Ronaldo and Aditya Agarwal Joining The Main Event

The 2015 ACOP marches ahead with the promise of star-excitement, as football icon Ronaldo and notables from several countries congregate for Main Event action starting on Monday. Among the already present Indian challengers, only Kunal Patni has managed to min-cash in Event 6 so far. He immediately made another attempt by jumping straight into Event 7 – HK $25,000 ACOP Warm-up, but here luck eluded him and he made an early exit.

However, reinforcements have arrived in Macau with Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal, ready to join in the HK $100,000 Main Event, which starts on Monday. Anant P, another of our Indian challengers will also be playing the same event, as will be Team PokerStars Brand Ambassador Ronaldo.

Event 8 – HK $250,000 and Event 9 – HK $9000 Ladies Championship also played out yesterday. Today will mark the culmination of Event 7. And, Monday will see Event 8 finding its champion, even as the Main Event Day 1A will begin at 3pm local time.


Event 6: HK $9,000 2M GTD Spadie

Event 6 broke all previous records with its 655-entry crowd, expanding the original guarantee to more than double with HK $5,146,335. The ultimate champion was Russian Vladimir Troyanovskiy, who collected his first Spadie and HK $927,635, for 1st place after a heads up deal. Jiabin Cui of China was runner up, picking up HK $912,000 for his efforts.

Kunal Patni did end Day 1A with a bang as the third largest chip stack, however, he fizzled out into a 61st place finish for HK $20,600, just making the cash-bus, of the top 63 players.

Event 7: HK $25,000 ACOP Warm-Up

256 hopefuls signed up for the event, and only 27 of these will get a piece of the accumulated $5,711,360 prize pool.

After a disappointing run in Event 6, Kunal Patni courageously jumped straight into Event 7, but it just did not seem to be his day, as he was soon eliminated.


Event 8: HK $250,000 High Roller

With its wallet-pinching buy-in of HK $250,000, the High Roller attracted some of the top names from across the globe including Erik Seidel, John Juanda, Mustapha Kanit, Bryn Kenney, Dominik Nitsche, Shawn Buchanan, Jonathan Karamalikis, Stephen Chidwick and Sam Trickett.

Day 1 of the event saw 55 registrations for the event, but only 39 of these survived to make the next day.

Allan Bedwick bagged 1,038,000 to end the day as chip lead. Russian Aleksander Denisov was seen dominating the play all day, but managed only to bag 1,031,000 in chips as the 2nd chip lead.

Event 9: HK $9,000 Ladies Asia Championship

The $9,000 buy-in Ladies Event saw 40 contestants vying for a prize pool of $314,280. Chao Tan of China claimed the title for $113,150.

Today, Sunday Nov 8 will see Day 2 of the High Roller, with re-entries allowed. We will also see Event 7 crowning a champion!

This Week in Poker: October 28 – November 3

Over the past few weeks, ‘live action’ seems to be the mantra and this spills over onto the last months of this year. On one hand, the European Poker Tour (EPT) 12 Malta concluded last week, but the upcoming week promises further excitement with the 2015 Asia Championship of Poker, which is now into its 5th day of its 17-day sojourn at the PokerStars LIVE poker room in Macau. From the Indian batch, Kunal Patni and Meherzad Munsaf are already in Macau, but are yet to find any scores. Many more other Indian players are set to join them soon, including Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal, Anup P and Bobbe Suri among others.

This month, players will also have numerous international tournaments to look forward to, such as the 2015 World Poker Tour (WPT) National-Georgia, 2015 L.A. Poker Open, 2015 Aria High Roller XVII-XVIII among others. And on the domestic front, it will be the IPC Dec edition at the Deltin Royale, Goa, with daily double satellites on at Spartan Poker, for those seeking a piece of live tournament action.

Online too, it’s been a busy season with the PokerStars Spin & Go tournaments rewarding six players with the life-changing $1 Million prize, all within one week. These included “ifipushud325“, “handbt1“, “barrakuuda4“, “prophethicks“, “wrawras” and “Samara Lúcio“. The Spin & Go`s have been kind to one of our Indian players as well, who won $300,000 on Wednesday, Oct 28. The Indian player who won the $300,000 jackpot is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week”, but in a first-of-its-kind such incident, he has requested anonymity and that his name be withheld.

In this week’s report, we also bring you the highlights about new changes at PokerStars, tournament reports, the upcoming WSOP Main Event final table and a new development that may lead to legalized “Rummy Cafes” in Maharashtra.

Aditya ‘Adi Agarwal’ Agarwal made a 1st place for $6,624.00 in the PokerStars ‘$215 NL Hold’em [Turbo, Re-Entry], $15K GTD’. He then made two – 3rd place finishes. One for $1,512.00 in the PokerStars ‘$109 NL Hold’em [Turbo, Re-Entry], $8K GTD’ and another for $1,430.00 in the PokerStars ‘$109 NL Hold’em [Turbo], $10K GTD’. In all, Agarwal made $8,566 this week.

Armaan ‘Armaan007’ Kochhar made a 2nd place for $1,620.00 in the PokerStars ‘$27 NL Hold’em [Turbo, Knockout], $12K GTD – Guarantee Boost’!

Tanmay ‘Tanmay’ Sahay won $1,106.55 for 6th place in PokerStars ‘The Hot $33 [Turbo], $25K GTD’.

Akash ‘Buddhaluv’ Sanghvi finished in 3rd place for $1,024.29 in the PokerStars ‘$82 NL Hold’em [6-Max, Hyper-Turbo], $6K GTD’.

Sumit ‘Silwal_7’ Silwal made a 1st place for $1,678.08 in the PokerStars ‘$13.50 NL Hold’em [Turbo, Knockout], $10K GTD’.

The online action on the domestic front however, continues non-stop at Spartan Poker. Vidwath ‘Ph03NiX’Shetty is the latest winner at Spartan Poker. ‘Ph03NiX’ not only complied with all terms set by the Spartan Bankroll Challenge – PLO (SBC PLO), but overcame 23 other contestants to win the race in the month long challenge. Besides the SBC PLO, this week will see the culmination of Team Spartan Pro Sangeeth ‘Samoh’ Mohan’s Spartan Pro Hunt.

Lined up is further action ahead with the Spartan Poker Cash Game Bonanza Week, from Nov 1 to 8. There is a total of ₹1,65,000 in prizes up for grabs for players. Moreover, these prizes will be for three different categories, with prizes for PLO, NLH cash games, as well as a leaderboard for micro stakes.


PokerStars Announces Further Changes in VIP Program, Policies and Marketing Strategy

PokerStars has announced numerous further changes to its site policies and services. The announcement came on Sunday, Nov 1 at the PokerStars blog, by Eric Hollreiser, VP, Corporate Communications, Amaya.

Maximum of the changes are in its VIP programs, with players of different levels being affected, and a new currency system being introduced.

The site will also make additional changes to its Third-Party Software policies and plans on making huge investments in global marketing campaigns to attract more new players.

2015 WSOP November Nine Final Table

It’s that time of the year again, when the momentous final table of the WSOP Main Event will culminate with the November Nine. The final match will resume on Sunday, Nov 8 at 8:30 pm ET, where the nine players will be whittled down to four. On Monday, Nov. 9 at 8 pm ET, the match is expected to reach heads up play, with the ultimate champion crowned on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 9 pm ET.

The venue, inside the cavernous Penn and Teller Theater at the Rio, is expected to sport a carnival-like atmosphere, with each players bringing along dozens of family and friends, besides fans of the sport.

This year, ESPN’s prime-time television broadcast will expand from two days to three days, for the very first time. Coverage will start on Sunday, November 8th at 5:30 pm PST.

ESPN has covered the highlights of the Main Event, leading to the November Nine in 15 episodes that have already been aired.

The already famous November Nine of 2015 include Joe McKeehan (63,100,100), Zvi Atern (29,800,000), Neil Blumenfield (22,000,100), Pierre Neuville (21,075,100), Max Steinberg (20,200,000), Thomas Cannuli (12,250,100), Josh Beckley (11,800,000), Patrick Chan (6,225,100) and Frederico Butteroni (6,200,000).

Of these, only Max Steinberg has won a bracelet before, in a $1,000 NLH event in 2012.


ACOP 2015 Recap, APPT Season 10 Schedule Announced

The final stop of the APPT Season 9, the 2015 ACOP began on Oct 30 and will end on Nov 15. To date three side events are over with new champions, however, there has been a no-show from any of our Indian players present.

Event 1 – Rebuy Championship was won by Poland’s Piotr Kania for HK $167,700.

China’s Wei Zhao claimed the title in Event 2 – Deepstack for HK $422,400 and his first Spadie.

Event 3 – PLO again saw a Chinese player, Leon Li-Ta Hsu win the title, collecting HK $207,400 as top prize.

The HK $100,000 Main Event running from Nov 9 to 14, will once again be the highlight of the series and is expected to draw a large Indian contingent. Asian circuit regular and India’s first Spadie winner, Kunal Patni is already in Macau, as is Meherzad Munsaf, who recently scored a fourth place finish in the Indian poker Championship (IPC) Oct Main Event.

Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal, Anup P and Bobbe Suri are some of the other Indian players confirmed to be joining in, among many others.

Even as the 2015 ACOP plays out, the schedule for Season 10 of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) was announced. The new tour will have 11 stops that include Macau, Seoul, Manila and Melbourne. The series will begin with the Macau Millions on Jan 8, 2016 and will conclude on Dec 4, 2016.

EPT 12 Malta – Niall Farrell Wins Main Event, Byron Kaverman Ships High Roller

The action also blazed in the western part of the globe with the 2015 European Poker Tour (EPT) Season 12 Malta. The Main Event concluded after six days of play and 651 entries creating a prize pool of €3,157,350.

British player Niall Farrell was the ultimate champion, collecting the trophy and the winning purse of €534,300!

The €10,300 High Roller was another highlight event and this one saw pro Byron Kaverman, who is ruling the No. 1 spot on the GPI rankings for five weeks now, claim the title, along with the top prize of €430,800.

A notable finish was made by Indian-origin player Mukul Pahuja, who made 2nd place for €290,100, after 90 minutes of valiant heads up play in the event.

Ben Cade Captures WPT Emperors Palace Poker Classic Title

Meanwhile, the WPT Emperors Palace Poker Classic saw its 36,000 Main Event conclude this weekend.

Ben Cade was the last man standing after beating 134 other contestants and took home the title, as well as the top prize of R1,382,000 (approx. $100,000).

Nipun Java, noted Indian-origin player made a 4th place finish in the event for R355,510 (approx $25,724.31).

Maharasthra May Soon Have Legal “Rummy Cafes”

A new report has emerged, which may mean a fresh lease of life for rummy lovers in Maharashtra. According to the Hindustan Times, a Pune resident Milind Limaye has been fighting for legalized “Rummy Cafes” hosting tournaments across the state, since the past 7 years.

The Bombay High Court has finally asked the state govt to issue such licenses and the matter is now pending with the Home Department, which is seeking Judicial advice on the same.

Live tournament action continued at a hectic pace in the Far-East, with the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Philippines III 2016 taking over from the Macau Poker Cup 25 that ended last week. Team India is in attendance at the Resorts World Manila for the APT Philippines III, with several of our players including tournament regulars Kunal Patni, Dhaval Mudgal, Spartan Poker qualifier Rakesh Kalla, along with IOPC Main Event champion Abhishek Jalan. Mudgal has already scored a cash in the opening event, while Patni and Jalan missed the money in the Teams Event.

Online the action was focused on the WCOOP, which saw Raghav Bansal make an impressive third place, collecting his career’s best score of $47,500 in WCOOP 49 – ($700 NLH Mix-Max). For this, he walks away with our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” title.

Spartan Poker continues its tradition of BIG winners and the latest is Ujjwal “fultufun” Rana, who will be the proud owner of a brand new Renault Duster car for topping the TLB Leaderboard Challenge.

Back home, we have news about the Deltin Poker Tournament Powered by Adda52, which returns in October and the latest demands of the opposition Congress in Goa, which include a ban on casino advertisements.

Internationally, we have news of Sheldon Adelson’s fifth casino in Macau and hopes of a bill to legalize casinos in Japan. On the other hand, Vietnam has decided to bar locals from entering casinos and in Massachusetts, USA, a panel is to study online gambling regulation.

The WCOOP is thundering on, now into its 16th day, with several new winners. Dan “djk123” Kelly won Event 49 ($700 NLH Mix-Max), marking it as his fifth WCOOP title that got him $88,102.30 in prize money, after a heads up deal. With this, Kelly is the only player in the world with five WCOOP titles!

Records were also made at the Mini-WCOOP, including an incredible one, where a male nurse won two back-to-back events. 34-year old Iwan ‘Ethanolol’ Roberts entered Event 27: $2.20 No-Limit Hold’em {Deep Payouts}, where he defeated 18,856 entrants to claim the top prize of $3,509.75.

The same day at 12:30 pm he also registered for Event 28: $11.00 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em 8-Max and won it for $15,604.2, after outlasting 11,982 entrants. In all, he converted $15 into a profit of $19K.

The cherry on his cake, was PokerStars giving him a free seat to the WCOOP $5,000 Main Event $10m GTD in appreciation.

Once again it was reward-time at Spartan Poker and this time actor-poker player Ujjwal “fultufun” Rana collected a fabulous new Renault Duster car for winning the TLB leaderboard Challenge, where he topped the charts three times in the past six months.

The 888poker XL Series got underway on Sunday, September 17 and will continue till September 25, with 40 varied events and a whopping 4,000,000 in guaranteed prize pools.

APT Philippines 2016 III

Excitement was in the air as the APT Philippines 2016 III unfolded in Manila. The $1,650 Main Event is now down to the final eight players, after the elimination of Ceesvin Abdulla at ninth place. Norway’s Markus Garberg is leading the eight with the biggest stack of 2.435 million chips.

Several Indians, including Dhaval Mudgal, Kunal Patni and Spartan Poker qualifier Rakesh Kalla participated in the Main Event, but failed to make any headway.

The series began with Dhaval cashing in the Opening Event for $1,200, with Mark Amaparo claiming the title for $15,860.

Team India`s Kunal Patni and Abhishek Jalan were part of Event 3 – $440 Battle of the Nations, but were unable to cash the event, which was finally won by the Filipino team of Emmanuel Segismundo and Jannodin De Leon for $3,870.

JC Sayo made headlines, as he collected two titles. He first won Event 5 – $440 Head Hunter 100/Bounty for $11,260 and then also triumphed at Event 9 – $330 No Limit Hold’em 1 Day for $7,280.

Some of the other big winners were Taiwan’s Kuo Yu En, who took down Event 7 – $1,100 High Rollers OFC Pineapple Shootout 12 Max for a payday of $5,040 and Korea`s Chang Hun Lee who won Event 2 – $2,200 PLO High Rollers for $9,700.
