Breakout Indian Scores of 2021

If 2020 was a year that saw us come face to face with a global pandemic, 2021 was a mixed bag. It started out looking like things were going back to normal, and then the second wave hit, throwing everyone back in the loop. This mixed bag of a year allowed for the revival of live poker, and therefore, unlike 2020, we have the opportunity to report on the year’s top live scores.

This feature looks at the top five Indian breakout scores of 2021, both in live and online events. We chose to omit results from the GGPoker-hosted 2021 WSOP Online Series, but the list is long nevertheless!

One of the earliest breakout scorers of the year belonged to PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh, who landed the IOPC – The Crown Main Event title in January for a career-best ₹51.81 Lakhs. Singh held onto the mantle of being the year’s single-biggest online scorer until July when Vaibhav Temani clinched the IOPC The Crown title for ₹57.26 Lakhs after beating poker veteran Aditya Agarwal heads-up. In October, he ultimately lost the ‘biggest online scorer’ title to Ishaan Chugh – the latter winning PokerBaazi’s EndBoss 2021 for ₹71.48 Lakhs. Chugh opted for a three-way deal with Dhiraj Lakhotia (2nd for ₹57.30 Lakhs) and Divanshu Khurana (3rd for ₹63.37 Lakhs).

The ‘original Poker Guru’ Aditya Agarwal himself emerged as the single-biggest Indian scorer of 2021 – though the poker veteran may not be too happy with the near misses he had both online and live. While his runner-up score at the IOPC – The Crown July propelled him as one of the year’s top scorers, the Kolkata-born player was Team India’s top scorer at the WSOP. Agarwal came whiskers close to winning his career-first bracelet in Event #76: $10K Super Turbo Bounty but lost the title to Romain Lewis. His runner-up finish fetched him a personal-best $286,705 (~₹2.13 Crores), making him the biggest live Indian scorer of 2021.

Young Gun Neel Joshi’s third-place finish in Event #86: $1,000 Super Turbo NLHE, Abhinav Iyer’s 60th place score in the WSOP Main Event, as well as Vikranth Anga and Vidur Sethi’s FT finishes at the series will go down in history as the biggest live scores by Indians in 2021.

Top 5 Live Scores of 2021

We now briefly examine the phenomenal runners and their standout moments on the live felts in 2021.

1. Aditya Agarwal

2nd in 2021 WSOP Event #76: $10K Super Turbo Bounty for $286,705 (~₹2.13 Crores)

Arguably the most experienced Indian player at the WSOP, Aditya Agarwal, could not find many deep runs early at the live series this year. But as the bracelet sweat built up, the poker superstar found his breakout moment in Event #76: $10K Super Turbo Bounty, where he cruised to the final table with a dominating chip lead. The Indian rail watched with bated breath as Agarwal made the heads-up finale against Winamax Team Pro Romain Lewis. Lewis turned the tables, eventually walking away as the champion.

Though he missed clinching the coveted WSOP bracelet, Agarwal picked up a career-best $286,705 (~₹2.13 Crores) for finishing runner-up, also becoming the year’s biggest live scorer from India.

2. Abhinav Iyer

60th in 2021 WSOP Event #67: $10K Main Event World Championship for $113,800 (~₹84.64 Lakhs)

The country’s first solo bracelet champion Abhinav Iyer was the most consistent Indian performer at the WSOP. Iyer was the only Indian who made it as far as Day 6 in the $10K WSOP Main Event World Championship and cashed out in 60th place for $113,800 (₹84.64 Lakhs) – becoming the fifth Indian to crack the top 100 in the prestigious tournament.

3. Neel Joshi

3rd in 2021 WSOP Event #86: $1,000 Super Turbo NLHE for $72,031 (~₹53.58 Lakhs)

Like Agarwal, Young Gun Neel Joshi had a breakout run at the 2021 WSOP and drove up a new career milestone in live cashes. Joshi made it to the unofficial final table of Event #86: $1,000 Super Turbo NLHE with the fourth-largest stack, but his dream run was cut short in fourth place. Joshi banked a personal-best $72,031 (~₹53.58 Lakhs), taking the #3 spot among the biggest Indian live scorers of 2021.

4. Vikranth Anga

8th in 2021 WSOP Event #64: $5,000 Mixed NLHE/PLO for $53,824 (~₹40.07 Lakhs)

Yes, Abhinav Iyer makes the top-five list for the second time! One of the seven ITM finishes the Chennai-born player ran up at the 2021 WSOP was a 12th place score worth $41,481 (~₹31.09 Lakhs) in Event #56: $10K 6-Handed NLHE Championship.

Now that 2022 is underway, online poker, as usual, has been doing well. On the other hand, live poker is again at a standstill, with the Omicron variant running rampant in India, leading to partial lockdowns in several states. With the 12th edition of the Indian Online Poker Championship starting on January 20 and the National Poker Series slated to return for its second edition in March, we await another round of massive online scores!

But what about live scores? Well, live domestic tournaments may not be on the cards for some time, but there is hope with the 2022 WSOP slated to begin in May. If the travel restrictions are not as stringent, perhaps a larger Indian contingent will turn up for the annual series, rounding up more scores for us to report.
