WPT to Break New Ground With Landmark WPT Macau Series From June 18-24
After 22 seasons of global expansion, the World Poker Tour is finally planting its flag in China! This June, the legendary WPT Main Tour makes its historic debut at the opulent Wynn Macau, promising high-stakes thrills from June 18 to 24. This landmark series will feature several prestigious tournaments, setting the stage for potential history-making moments.
The WPT Macau festival (June 18 to 24) promises thrilling action all week long. The HK$40,000 buy-in Championship event (June 20 to 24) is the crown jewel, while the ultra-high-stakes HK$200,000 buy-in WPT High Roller (June 19 to 20th) adds another layer of adrenaline to the mix.
WPT’s groundbreaking China series is a collaborative effort with Allied Gaming & Entertainment (AGAE) and Wynn Macau. AGAE, a driving force in experiential gaming, is familiar to poker fans through their HyperX Arena at the Luxor – a venue synonymous with exhilarating WPT final tables. Here, Bin Weng‘s electrifying rise to the 2024 Global Poker Index Player of the Year title unfolded.
“Macau has long been a coveted destination for us. We’re eager to deliver the iconic WPT experience to this dynamic region,” said Adam Pliska, WPT CEO, in a press release. “Our sincere thanks to AGAE and Wynn Macau for making this exciting expansion possible. This is a series you won’t want to miss!”
“We’re excited to partner with these esteemed global brands to bring the World Poker Tour to Macau, SAR, P.R. China,” said Yinghua Chen, Chief Executive Officer of AGAE, echoing Pliska`s enthusiasm. “Our shared commitment to this growing entertainment market positions us for major success. This marks the WPT’s first physical presence in Macau after two decades of operations. We’re leveraging our resources and expertise to create a truly memorable experience in this thrilling market.”
Linda Chen, President, Vice Chairman of the Board, and Executive Director of Wynn Macau Limited, emphasized Macau’s global appeal: “This partnership marks a significant milestone as we introduce one of the world’s most esteemed poker events to Macau. Bringing legendary poker figures to our city reinforces Macau’s status as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure. This captivating event will attract global visitors eager to experience Macau’s unique energy.”
WPT’s Asia Legacy and Indian Connection
While the Macau debut is monumental, it’s important to remember the WPT’s deep roots in Asia. In 2018, fueled by the explosion of poker’s popularity in the Asia Pacific, the WPT launched its inaugural ‘Asia Swing’ tour. Stops in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and India solidified the WPT’s commitment to the region. The ‘Asia Swing’ continued in 2019, with WPT Cambodia being added to the list of stops.
In subsequent years, WPT’s Prime Tour gained a strong foothold in Asia, especially in Vietnam and Cambodia. Following the new GST regulations implemented in October 2023, WPT cancelled its India-facing tour for 2024. However, before that, WPT held four thriving festivals at Casino Deltin Royale in Goa from 2017 to 2019 and 2023.
Macau has a special significance for veteran Indian players. Aditya Agarwal‘s runner-up finish in the 2018 APPT Macau Main Event, Abhishek Goindi‘s second-place finish in the 2012 Macau Poker Cup – Red Dragon Event, and Sangeeth Mohan‘s 10th-place finish in the 2011 APPT Macau Main Event are just a few examples of India’s poker prowess in the region.
Macau’s easy visa options for Indians (visa-free under 30 days) could attract a strong contingent eager to write the next chapter in India’s poker legacy. With Indian talent on the rise, don’t be surprised to see them make waves at WPT Macau!
APT Hanoi Billions 2023: Siddharth Arya Jolly Wins India’s First Series Title in VN₫ 5 Million Tick Tock BOOM! (~₹5 Lakhs)
Day 5 of the APT Hanoi Billions 2023, held at the National Convention Center in Hanoi in partnership with the Vietnam Series of Poker (VSOP), marked a significant milestone for Team India. Their consistent performance, marked by numerous deep runs and final table appearances, finally paid off with a maiden title victory in this record-setting series.
Siddharth Arya Jolly was the hero of the day, winning his first live title in Event #46: VN₫ 5 Million Tick Tock BOOM. This event, true to its name, offered an escalating pace, with levels shortening every hour to a rapid 2-minute interval, intensifying the gameplay. Jolly excelled in this dynamic environment, outperforming 139 participants (113 unique) to claim the top prize from the VN₫ 606.735 Million pool, amounting to VN₫ 145.615 Million (~₹5 Lakhs), having entered the event shortly after bagging a stack from Flight B of the Main Event. This victory was Arya’s third score of the series, boosting his total winnings to VN₫ 160.565 Million (~₹5.51 Lakhs).
In an all-Indian heads-up, Jolly defeated Sam Anand, the Natural8 India – APT Hanoi Billions India Exclusive Tournament finalist, who took home VN₫ 98.90 Million (~₹3.40 Lakhs). Other notable Indian finishers in the event were Siddharth Mundada (5th for VN₫ 43.26 Million) (~₹1.49 Lakhs), Varun Ganjoo from PokerBaazi (11th for VN₫ 12.13 Million) (~₹41,648), and Zarvan Tumboli (19th for VN₫ 8.13 Million) (~₹27,914).
Another major highlight of the day was the second starting flight of the APT Hanoi Billions Main Event, which further heightened anticipation by building on the record-breaking trajectory. Flight 1B recorded 535 entries (442 unique), pushing the total count to 1,418 entries and the prize pool to a jaw-dropping VN₫ 44.50 Billion. This positions the Main Event tantalizingly close to surpassing the APT Taipei record of 1,434 entries, a milestone expected to be easily achieved before the end of Flight 1C. The key intrigue now revolves around the final size of the participant field, with two flights remaining and late registrations open until the start of Day 2.
In the turbulent Flight B, 211 players advanced to Day 2, joining the 246 survivors from Flight A. South Korea’s Jun Young Park led the pack with an impressive 361,100 chips, positioning him fourth overall in chips. Vietnam’s Nguyen Trung Quan secured the second-highest stack with 320,700 chips. Hernan Villa, a former Main Event champion and recent Event #28 victor, also cracked the 300K mark with 305,300 chips.
The Indian contingent saw significant success, with eight players advancing from Flight B. Harsh Bubna led the group with 183,900 chips, followed by Avneesh Munjal (128,500), Abhishek Goindi (111,200), Jasven Saigal (97,500), Jatin Sablani (86,700), Ritesh Khatwani (70,900), Rising Star Ritwik Khanna (60,600), and Event #46 winner Siddharth Arya Jolly (27,200).
Flight 1C begins at 11 AM (local time) today, with PokerGuru providing live updates, particularly focusing on the Indian players. Anticipation is high for what promises to be a historic day at the APT, with the Main Event poised to hit an all-time entry record.
Continuing their impressive performance, the Indian contingent made significant strides on Tuesday. Team India has already recorded 52 in-the-money finishes, including nine final-table appearances and one title victory.
Yagyavalk Bhatt, showcasing consistent form, achieved his second final table score of the series. He placed fifth in Event #44: VN₫ 8 Million Turbo – Super Hold’em, earning VN₫ 63.40 Million (~₹2.18 Lakhs). Further contributions to the team’s success came from Nishant Sharma, who finished 11th with VN₫ 17.61 Million (~₹60,464), and Rising Star Pratibh Saluja, securing 15th place with VN₫ 14.17 Million (~₹48,653).
The Turbo – Super Hold’em itself was noteworthy, attracting 123 entries (101 unique), a new APT record for this category in the country. China’s Jinqi Wang won the event, taking home the top prize of VN₫ 199.20 Million.
In Event #39: VN₫ 50 Million Single Day High Roller – Mystery Bounty – 8 Max, Karan Gupta notched his first series score, finishing 34th for VN₫ 49.93 Million (~₹1.71 Lakhs). This event was notable for breaking a record set just two days earlier. It drew a remarkable 306 entries (233 unique), surpassing the previous largest-ever APT Single Day High Roller field record established in Event #18. The tournament featured a jaw-dropping VN₫ 7.237 Billion prize pool, and the excitement ramped up with the Mystery Bounty component, which activated when the field narrowed to the final 78. This added VN₫ 6.12 Billion to the bounty pool, extending payouts to the top 39 contenders.
Due to the substantial turnout, an additional day was scheduled to manage the large field. As the event progresses into Day 2, only six players remain in the hunt for the VN₫ 1.451 Billion grand prize, with Indonesia’s Jhon Hendri leading with 9,520,000 chips.
Event #47: VN₫ 2 Million Super Hyper Turbo the day`s slate of tournaments, attracting 193 players (164 unique). The fast-paced event, featuring thirty 5-minute turbo levels, offered the top finishers a share of the VN₫ 336.978 Million prize pool.

In the PokerGuru feature, ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuits. Here are this week’s top stories!
September commenced with unsettling updates for the real-money online gaming sector. As the October 1 deadline for the 28% GST on player deposits looms, the Supreme Court threw a curveball. The apex court temporarily stayed the Karnataka High Court’s directive, reopening recovery actions against Bengaluru’s Gameskraft Technology in the ₹21,000 Crores GST evasion case. The court will revisit the issue in three weeks, raising fears about retrospective taxation implications for GamesKraft and potentially 35 other online gaming firms.
States are actively modifying their GST regulations to bring the new GST regime into effect. Arunachal Pradesh led the charge by approving changes to its GST Act, making it one of the first states to adopt the new tax system. Meanwhile, Karnataka is contemplating a similar move, and Haryana ratified its GST (Amendment) Bill 2023 on August 28. Adhering to its October 1 deadline, the Central Government has notified amendments to the CGST Rules 2017.
Transitioning from the legal corridors to the vibrant international poker felts, the USOP Hanoi 2023 has been a beehive of activity, boasting 38 coveted trophy events. The name resonating loudly across the poker community is that of WSOP bracelet winner Abhinav Iyer. Iyer made waves by seizing the VN₫ 1 Billion GTD Mini High Roller title, pocketing a cool VN₫ 830 Million (~₹28.51 Lakhs), marking his live tournament victory after four years. The winning streak didn’t end there; Iyer also claimed a commendable fifth place in Event #9: Superstar Challenge, augmenting his kitty by VN₫ 576 Million (~₹19.87 Lakhs). Altogether, his accolades from the series amount to VN₫ 1.406 Billion (~₹48.52 Lakhs), bestowing upon him our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” accolade.
In another notable performance, Sahil Agarwal finished eighth in Event #9: Superstar Challenge, taking home VN₫ 336 Million (~₹11.60 Lakhs).

With a staggering ₹15.16 Lakhs in total earnings, Arya, a BITS Pilani graduate, etched his name in gold by securing the 40th The MoneyMaker title.
