This Week in Poker: May 25 – 31
In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!
This past week was a terrific one for Team India in Vietnam. On Sunday, Mumbai-based poker pro Zarvan Tumboli lifted the WPT Prime Vietnam Main Event trophy, becoming the second Indian after MPL Poker Pro Dhaval Mudgal to claim the WPT Vietnam Main Event title. Tumboli waded past a record-breaking 777-player field to collect his second WPT title and a personal-best VND 3.050 Billion (~₹1.02 Crores), making him our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”
The WPT Main Event heads-up was a dream come true for the Indian railbird, as Tumboli faced off with none other than the 2019 WPT India Main Event champion, PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot. Munot collected a hefty VND 2.025 Billion in second place.
The breakout run in the Main Event by the Indians came just days after India`s first WSOP bracelet winner Aditya Sushant captured Event #15: PLO for his second WPT trophy and VND 155 Million (~₹5.18 Lakhs).
While Team India’s spectacular success in Vietnam was the week’s highlight, MPL Poker’s India Poker Festival and Adda52’s Beat the Heat series drove up the virtual action. Rahul Nischal topped the online charts as he took down the ₹1 Crore GTD BTH Main Event on Sunday for ₹16.70 Lakhs.
The IPF #5 Mini Main Event winner Sreekanth Narayan, BTH Main Event runner-up finisher Vishal Tulsyan, Myron Pereira, Avijit Jaiswal, Sahil Chutani, and PokerGuru Ambassador Tarush Gupta were the week`s other top scorers.
The online MTT action will soon hit top gear with four headline MTT stops running in tandem before the weekend. While MPL Poker’s India Poker Festival (May 26 – June 5) is on the home stretch, PokerBaazi’s 1100 Texas Hold ‘em Championship (May 31 – June 19) got going yesterday. And further enforcements are approaching as India’s biggest-ever ₹33 Crores GTD India Online Poker Championship (June 2 – 19) starts tomorrow, followed by PokerStars India’s Summer Series (June 3 – 13) and Natural8’s Asian Poker League ( (June 3 – 19) the day after!
In good news for Pocket52 users, the site is handing out up to 70% cashback as part of its revamped Pocket Vault rewards program.
Coming back to live poker, many Indians have stayed back in Vietnam for the Asian Poker Tour Vietnam that’s coming up from June 7 – 19 at the Grand Loyal Poker Club, Grand Vista Hotel in Hanoi.
Speaking of the APT, the premium Asia-centric live tournament brand recently saw a change in ownership. APT Limited, part of the Asianlogic Group, has sold the brand to the newly formed APT Events Private Ltd., which has Malaysian poker pro Michael Soyza as one of the partners.
The biggest headline across the poker world was the start of the 53rd annual World Series of Poker that began proceedings yesterday. The much-awaited series is off to a promising start, with the first two events clocking in healthy turnouts. A sizeable Indian contingent is expected to be attending the mega-series, with India’s poker veteran Aditya Agarwal one of the early arrivals from India.
In other tournament highlights, the three-time bracelet winner Chance Kornuth clinched his first WPT title this week, winning the $3,800 Main Event at WPT Choctaw for $486,600.
