This Week in Poker: August 3 – 9

In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!

The first weekend of August was a firecracker one, with the second edition of the PokerBaazi Classics wrapping up on Sunday and Spartan Poker`s Freedom Celebration Series hosting a slew of flagship tournaments.

The offline action was also in top gear as Adda52`s Colossus High Roller Series and the PokerStars-powered Asia Pacific Poker Tour Manila drew to a scintillating close on Sunday.

Team India has been a dominating force in the Asian tournament circuit this year, and our Indian challengers did the country proud by reeling in four titles, and several FT finishes at the just-concluded APPT Manila. Dhanesh Chainani was the biggest mover and shaker from the team for his third-place finish in the APPT Manila Main Event worth ₱5,409,000 (~₹77.35 Lakhs) – his second-best live score to date. Chainani`s Main Event score catapulted him to a significant lead across the Indian scores (live and online), making him our PokerGuru Star of the Week!”

Chainani was part of a three-way deal in the APPT Manila Main Event. Singapore’s Xin Hua Lai whisked away the title and the top prize of ₱5,973,000. Netherland’s Thijs Hilberts finished runner-up in the event for the second time in a row, netting ₱6,071,000.

The Indian contingent clinched four titles in the series, the last of which was won by seasoned MTT pro Dhaval Mudgal who shipped Event #35: Flipout, picking up his maiden PokerStars LIVE title and ₱96,000 (~₹1.37 Lakhs).

Mudgal, Young Gun Kanchan Sharma, Siddarth Singhvi, and Jasven Saigal reeled in FT finishes in the last leg of the series.

With the APPT Manila getting over, the tournament action has moved back to Vietnam, where the APT Vietnam Ho Chi Minh got underway at the Saigon Poker Club on August 8. India’s Manoj Ramakrishna got the team its first score in the series with a deep run in the Warm-Up Event, finishing fifth for VND 134 Million (4.53 Lakhs). Vietnam’s Phan Huu Minh Tri won the tournament for VND 535 Million following a three-way deal.

APPT Manila wasn`t the online live tournament series keeping the Indian poker community busy. After four months, the live tournament action roared to life in Goa with Casino Deltin Royale playing host to the Adda52 Colossus High Roller Series. The three-event series saw Shravan Chhabra grabbing the ₹50K Warm-up Bounty title for ₹8.96 Lakhs. The IPC Megastacks Main Event champion, Young Gun Siddhanth Kripalani, topped the 69-entry field in the ₹200K High Roller to win his second live title of the year and a hefty ₹45.28 Lakhs cash prize. Aditya GS finished runner-up for ₹25.87 Lakhs. Nishant Sharma shipped the ₹100K Main Event for ₹33.15 Lakhs, while Spartan Poker Team Pro Nikita Luther (2nd for ₹21 Lakhs) and PokerGuru Ambassador Faiz Alam (3rd for ₹12.44 Lakhs) locked in the other top payouts.

With so much happening on the live poker circuit, the online winners were left relatively pale in comparison for a change. However, this doesn`t apply to Shagun Jain, who wrote his name into the history books after topping a stacked 3,797-entry field in PokerBaazi`s 2 Crores GTD PBC#22 Game Changer to collect a jaw-dropping 25.30 Lakhs. With the victory, the Jaipur-based player became the first to win the PokerBaazi headliner for an unprecedented second time. Sumit Kumar placed runner-up for 17 Lakhs, with Avijit Jaiswal collecting 13 Lakhs in third place.

The leaderboard toppers, Rising Star Ritwik Khanna, Young Gun Anuj Yadav, and Siddharth Gangwar, raked in the other massive scores in online tournaments this week.

With India`s 75th Independence Anniversary just around the corner, several poker platforms have rolled out a barrage of Independence-themed promotions.

While Spartan Poker’s Freedom Celebration Series is already coasting to guarantee-crushing turnouts, PokerBaazi’s brand-new Baazi Turbo Series will start on Sunday. The fast-paced series has 45 turbo events on the schedule and over 5 Crores in guaranteed prizes!

Not one to be left behind, IndiaPlays has announced a set of “Independence Special” promotions – a 5 Lakh GTD tournament, a 1.50 Lakhs GTD Freeroll & five 50K GTD Bank Roll Buster tournaments – all starting on August 15.

For upcoming players, MPL Poker is running a host of daily freerolls & high-value micro MTTs, guaranteeing 51,000 in prizes daily.

In more good news for players, the recently launched online poker site, PokerStreet, is running the “Race to Goa” promotion, offering cash game players a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Goa!

Asia’s favorite online poker room, Natural8, is hosting the massive $5 Million GTD Zodiac Festival from July 31 – August 14.

In another much-cheered news by the poker community, WSOP put up the details for the 2022 WSOP Online Series. The US edition will feature 33 bracelet events (an additional six bracelet events each for Michigan and Pennsylvania residents), followed by the international leg on GGPoker that will run 33 bracelet events (August 14 – October 18)!

With this, we conclude this week’s roundup of the latest news updates and developments from the world of poker. We will return again next week with our weekly report. Stay tuned.

This Week in Poker: July 13 – 19

In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!

After 50 days of non-stop action, the 53rd annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) is just a day away from concluding.

Many Indians joined the rush to win the coveted gold bracelet in the last few events of the series this week. However, none came as close to accomplishing the task as PokerGuru Ambassador Kartik Ved. The PokerGuru Staking head honcho made it to his second final table of the series in Event #87: $5K 8-Handed NLHE, ultimately falling three places short of the finish line and collecting $172,103 (~₹1.37 Crores) in fourth place. This was his third-best career score and his ninth cash at the 2022 WSOP. For his mind-boggling performance, Kartik Ved is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”

Bracelet winner Abhinav Iyer also fired up a deep run in Event #86: $10,000 6-Handed NLHE Championship, finishing 38th for $20,000 (~₹15.99 Lakhs), while MPL Poker Pro Siddharth Karia ran the deepest among the nine Indians cashing Event #85: The Closer. He finished 28th for $16,740 (~₹13.37 Lakhs).

The week’s biggest story was undoubtedly the crowning of the new World Champion! Norway’s Espen Jørstad trounced over 8,663-player field in the Main Event – the second-largest Main Event field in WSOP history to capture the World Championship gold bracelet and the $10 Million first-place prize. Australian pro Adrian Attenborough, who recently returned to Natural8’s ‘Team Hot,’ collected $6 Million for his runner-up finish.

Las Vegas was not the only poker destination where Indian players made an impression. Vietnam has been witnessing healthy Indian participation over the past two months. With the 2022 APT Summer Festival Hanoi – VSOP kicking off on July 12, Team India has once again been a dominating force.

The Asian-circuit regular Ankit Jajodia has been on a breakout run in Vietnam in recent months and reeled in the biggest score for the team this week with his third-place finish in the VND 5 Billion GTD Main Event worth a career-best VND 1.324 Billion (~$56,542). Filipino player Vamerdino Magsakay shipped the Main Event to win VND 1.986 Billion (~$84,813) and the APT trophy and Championship Ring.

Jude Praveen Kumar (Won Event #8: Super Deep Stack Turbo for VND 98.19 Million, ~₹3.34 Lakhs), Sajal Gupta (Won Event #10: High Rollers Single Day for VND 335.67 Million, ~₹11.45 Lakhs) and Siddarth Singhvi (Won Event #16: Deep Stack Hyper Turbo for VND 88.13 Million, ~₹3 Lakhs) are the three Indians players who have won APT trophies in the first leg of the series.

Young Gun Sahil Chutani dominated the offline action. With this, we conclude this week’s roundup of the latest news updates and developments from the world of poker. We will return again next week with our weekly report. Stay tuned.

Online Rankings: Sahil Chutani Dominates the Weekly Charts, Vikranth Varma & Anuj Yadav Headline the Monthly & Yearly Leaderboards

In this feature, we bring you to the top three weekly, monthly, and yearly performers every Sunday. These rankings are based on cumulative winnings (cashes). However, the rankings only include players registered to our online ranking system, so hurry up and register if you haven’t signed up on PokerGuru yet!

We are midway through July, which is over half the year gone, and Young Gun Anuj Yadav seems in no mood to budge from the top of the POY rankings. Yadav was the first player (on our tracked database) to cross ₹1 Crore and then the ₹2 Crore milestone in annual winnings, and he’s just completed 20 weeks as the #1 ranked player of 2022. It’s been a breakout year for the MTT beast, who has maintained an unparalleled win rate – adding a litany of flagship titles and numerous massive scores. While Yadav’s scorecard increased by a relatively modest ₹1.54 Lakhs this past week, he sits unchallenged in total winnings (₹2.79 Crores) and is heading steadily towards the ₹3 Crore mark!

Yadav was the most profitable player of the year for the longest time, but that mantle has passed to another Young Gun, Sahil Chutani. The poker pro and coach has been on a rampage ever since he defended his IOPC – Legends title on Spartan Poker on June 12. This week, Chutani earned ₹22.57 Lakhs, boosting his annual tally significantly to ₹2.48 Crores. He’s still ranked #2 in total winnings, but with ₹1.72 Crores in net profits – he retains the most profitable player of the year tag.

Chutani’s aggressive charge last week has helped him displace Young Gun Arsh Grover at #2 in the annual rankings, pushing him down to #3 (₹2.32 Crores in annual winnings). Grover has been MIA (missing in action) from the online scene for several weeks – ever since he reached Las Vegas for the 2022 WSOP. However, the series is virtually over for everyone (except those who have won bracelets in the past – Tournament of Champions); we can’t wait for the POY race to get more competitive once the Indian contingent is back from the series!

Anuj Yadav’s slow week opened a window of opportunity for the APT#42 Super Highroller champion Vikranth Varma to climb to the #1 position on the July leaderboard. Since last weekend, Varma has reeled in approximately ₹13 Lakhs, expanding his July winnings to ₹38.49 Lakhs (₹27.12 Lakhs in net profits).
