This Week in Poker: August 31 – September 6
In the PokerGuru feature, ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!
View this post on Instagram
September officially marks the onset of the festive season in India! And while the hullabaloo is yet to set in, the digital felts have already started to sport highly intense action!
The online MTTs were in top gear this week with three headline stops, Spartan Poker’s Millionaire Series 5.0, MPL Poker`s Master Series, and PokerStars India’s Galactic Series running in tandem alongside a host of other attractions like PokerDangal’s Dangal Birthday Bash and IndiaPlays’ Multi-Flight Depositors Freeroll.
Standing out among the week`s top scorers was Vishal Tulsyan! The long-time poker pro captured Spartan Poker’s MS #23 – Monday Millionaire for ₹10.56 Lakhs, joining a super-elite group of three-time Millionaire champions, which has Young Guns Anuj Yadav and Gaurav Sood as its only other members! Tulsyan pocketed a leaderboard-topping ₹22.43 Lakhs across his weekly run, making him our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”
Giving Tulsyan stiff competition on the weekly rankings was the former IOPC – The Millionaire Main Event champion Anurag Srivastava who made several close finishes across the Millionaire Series flagships. Even with a title victory eluding him, Srivastava racked up an impressive ₹20.79 Lakhs and is presently the top-ranked player on the Millionaire Series 2 Million Leaderboard.
Rishab Malik, PokerGuru Ambassadors Sanchit Anand, Ashish Ahuja & Vivek Singh, Vaibhav Sharma, Nitesh Katiyar, and Deepesh Raka were the other week`s other top scorers!
It’s been raining money on the domestic felts, and Tulsyan is just one of the eight Millionaires to have emerged in Spartan Poker’s ongoing Millionaire Series 5.0. While the ₹13 Crores GTD online festival has at least five more players to make Millionaires, given the guarantee-crushing turnouts, the chances of that number increasing are high.
If the small-stakes grinders were feeling left out, PokerDangal’s Dangal Micro Value Series, a ₹10 Lakhs GTD extravaganza exclusively for the upcoming players, takes off today. Part of the Dangal Birthday Bash to commemorate PokerDangal completing five years of operations, the DMVS will be followed by an array of eclectic offers on the site through September!
Making September even more fun for micro stakes grinders is IndiaPlays’ Depositors Freeroll Series which offers ₹3 Lakhs in prizes across two multi-flight freerolls – each guaranteeing ₹1.50 Lakhs. Series 1 is already underway and will run till September 10, while Series 2 will run from September 19 to 24.
Meanwhile, Gamezy Poker and Pocket52’s September MTT lineup offers a very enticing ₹2.90-plus Crores in prizes each, opening up a range of options for players.
The tournament action is not going to slow down anytime soon as starting on September 12 will be PokerBaazi’s all-new 1000X Series, guaranteeing over ₹5 Crores in cash prizes through eight days of non-stop MTT action.
Two crucial developments rocked the Indian gaming landscape this week. The Supreme Court has listed the Tamil Nadu government`s appeal challenging the August 2021 Madras High Court order that deemed the state’s online gaming ban unconstitutional. The Apex Court is expected to hear the matter tomorrow.
While we await the court’s proceedings that could profoundly impact the gaming industry’s future in the country, the Group of Ministers (GoM) set up by the Central GST Council convened a meeting in New Delhi on September 5. The GoM, headed by Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangama, seems to have softened its stance on levying a uniform 28% GST on the online gaming, casinos, and horse racing sectors. The group will take a legal consult before submitting its final report in a week.
It`s been a little dry on the live tournament space in India these last few months. Still, cash game enthusiasts can make their way to Casino Deltin Royale in Goa to participate in the High Stakes Poker Cash Festival that commenced today and will continue till September 12.
Though live poker action is on the back burner in the country, it’s booming on the global felts!
Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Cyprus kicked off on September 5 and has already crowned champions in Finland’s Patrik Antonius (Won Event #1: $25,000 No Limit Hold’em 8-Handed for $825,000) and USA’s Ben Tollerene (Won Event #2: $30,000 No Limit Hold ’em 6-Handed for $807,000).
The Luxon Pay Mediterranean Poker Party culminated this week. France’s Hannes Jeschka took down the Main Event title for a career-best $542,000, following a three-way deal with Russia’s Arsenii Karmatckii (2nd for $471,000) and UK’s Steven Warburton (3rd for $534,000). Lithuania’s Tony G won the $10,400 High Roller for $257,500.
Arthur Morris (Won the WSOP Circuit Tulsa Main Event for $182,379), Jack Hardcastle (Won the Goliath X GUKPT Main Event for £125,450), and Indo-American Raminder Singh (Won WPT Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Event #13: $600 NLHE for $22,475) were other prominent winners in separate live events.
