We are closing in on the festive season, and the intense shopping and preparations for the Durga Puja and the Navratris are just around the corner. Resonating with the excitement of the upcoming festive season, the online poker platforms continued to dish out mind-boggling MTT and cash game action.

Even though the digital felts have been the center of attention for the longest time, there can be no denying that Indians have performed exceeding well in live tournaments this year. The South-Asian circuit has been the preferred stomping grounds for most Indians, but this week, we caught an Indian in action at the 2022 Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Cyprus. The long-time poker room operator Santhosh Suvarna made his Triton Poker debut in Event #5: $75K NLHE 8–Handed at the 2022 Triton Poker Super High Roller Series in Cyprus, and what a debut it was! The Dubai-based Indian entrepreneur finished eighth for a career-best $245,000 (₹1.95 Crores), making him our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”

The 2022 Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Cyprus is well past the mid-way stage, with Thailand’s Punnat Punsri taking down the $100K NLH Main Event for $2.60 Million. Patrik Antonius, Ben Tollerene, Pieter Aerts, Kahle Burns, Sam Grafton, Christopher Philippou and Matthias Eibinger shipped the other tournaments at the series. Running at the Merit Royal Hotel & Casino, the series will culminate on September 19.

Speaking of Indians doing well in international tournaments, Young Gun Arsh Grover captured his second live title in 20 days this week! The Delhi lad came out on top in Event #3: $900 NLHE of the 2022 PokerGO Tour – Stairway to Millions at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, banking a cool $12,510 (~₹9.95 Lakhs).

Persisting with their domination on the South-Asian felts, Team India has made their mark in the 2022 APT Philippines II, banking six cashes, including a title! Jasven Saigal, who won his maiden WPT trophy last month, added his career-second APT title to his list of achievements after championing Event #13: ₱22K NLHE for ₱532,300 (₹7.41 Lakhs).

Coming to the virtual felts, there was no dull day this entire week. It was an electrifying weekend with Spartan Poker’s Millionaire Series 5.0, MPL Poker`s Master Series, and PokerDangal’s DMVS winding up proceedings.

Vinayak Bajaj was the online chartbuster this week! On Sunday, the 29-year-old poker pro became a two-time The Millionaire champion when he took down Spartan Poker`s Millionaire Series 5.0 Main Event for ₹31.77 Lakhs. And as the icing on the cake, he won the Adda52 Millions as well, rounding up a jaw-dropping ₹44.81 Lakhs across his breakout run this week.

Dhaval Mudgal was another mover and shaker for his second-place finish in the Millionaire Series Main Event. The seasoned MTT pro fired up another runner-up finish in the MS #40 – High Roller, lapping up ₹37.37 Lakhs overall.

Where Mudgal missed the two flagship titles by whiskers, Saransh Garg took down two flagship tournaments. He won Spartan Poker`s MS #48 – Saturday Millionaire and followed that up with shipping the Tuesday High Roller a few days later, adding ₹27.69 Lakhs to his weekly tally.

The Galactic Series-82 [MAIN EVENT – Progressive KO champion Aditya Singh, Sanish Chhabra, Harshit Sanghi, Devendra Suthar, Myron Pereira, Pranav Bang, Ankit Bajaj, and Kunal Patni were the other top online scorers of the week.

Running full throttle now is PokerBaazi’s first-ever 1000X Series (September 12 – 17), where all the events offer 1000X value on the buy-in!

If you enjoy reality shows and poker, PokerHigh’s The Player Hunt Season 2 will hit the sweet spot. India’s first & only poker-based reality show premiered on celebrity host and VJ Rannvijay Singha`s YouTube channel on September 9.

Moving over to the industry news, on September 9, the Supreme Court heard the Tamil Nadu government’s appeal challenging the Madras High Court order that quashed the state’s online gaming ban. The two-judge bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Vikram Nath issued a notice, giving the respondents – Junglee Games, Play Games24x7, Head Digital Works, and the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) – four weeks to file their replies.

In Meghalaya, the government’s decision to regulate online gaming and permit casinos hasn’t borne well with the opposition and various groups across the state. Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong assured the media last month that the government had decided against setting up casinos in the state. However, on Monday, state law minister James Sangma told the legislative assembly that the government is focused on promoting tourism and has issued temporary casino licenses to three applicants.

On a positive note, Google Inc has announced a brand-new one-year pilot project, starting September 28, 2022, permitting DFS and online rummy apps on the Google Play Store.

In other international tournament action, Corey Wade captured the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Tampa (SHRT) Main Event for $471,686 (three-way deal).

WPT Prime Cambodia: Zarvan Tumboli & Akshay Kapoor Pick Up Side Event Titles Taking India’s Tally to Four WPT Trophies

The 2022 World Poker Tour (WPT) Prime Cambodia is nearly completing its first week of action, and Team India has already won four titles with 29 cashes!

PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot got the ball rolling after he took down the NagaWorld SuperStack for $12,877 (~₹10.25 Lakhs). Kunal Patni joined the ranks shipping the Deepstack NLH for $7,853 (~₹6.23 Lakhs).

Two more Indians lifted WPT trophies on Tuesday. Akshay Kapoor shipped the NLH Single Day for $6,496 (~₹5.15 Lakhs). On the same day, Spartan Poker Team Pro Zarvan Tumboli, who has been on a heater of a lifetime, championed the WPT Pot Limit Omaha for $7,000 (~₹5.55 Lakhs)!

Speaking of Zarvan Tumboli, he is undoubtedly having the time of his life. The freshly minted Spartan Poker brand ambassador has been on a breakout run since March and has won five live titles in the last five months!

Tumboli`s breakout run started in March when he won the 2022 BPT ₹100K Highroller for ₹50.03 Lakhs. Having added a significant boost to his bankroll, Tumboli planned to attend the 2022 WSOP but had to pull out due to visa issues. That seems to have been a blessing in disguise as Tumboli went on a tear in Vietnam, netting over ₹1.10 Crores in three weeks!

About two months after shipping the BPT High Roller, Tumboli became the first-ever WPT Prime Main Event champion! Not stopping, Tumboli carried his indomitable form to the 2022 APT Vietnam Hanoi, where he cashed four events and won two trophies. Tumboli kicked off his APT Vietnam Hanoi campaign with an eighth-place finish in Event #9: NLHE High Rollers for VND 55.27 Million (~₹1.87 Lakhs). He followed it up by winning back-to-back titles in Event #17: Deep Stack Hyper Turbo for VND 73.06 Million (~₹2.46 Lakhs) and Event 18: Pot-Limit Omaha for VND 70.90 Million (~₹2.38 Lakhs) before wrapping up the series with a seventh-place finish in Event #21: NLHE Monster Stack for VND 44.18 Million (~₹1.49 Lakhs).

Next came the APT Summer Festival Hanoi – VSOP in July. Tumboli did not win any titles in this series but came close a few times. He chopped Event #5: PLO with Norway’s Tommy Duy Linh, securing VND 66.16 Million (~₹2.25 Lakhs) in second place. He even final-tabled the VND 4 Billion GTD Championships Event, finishing eighth for VND 287.31 Million (~ ₹9.89 Lakhs).

The Tumboli storm has now moved to Cambodia, with the Indian pro bagging his second WPT trophy in three months, his third overall.

Talking about his win in the post-tournament interview, Tumboli said, “I’m pretty happy. This was my third consecutive PLO heads-up and third PLO trophy. This is my forte. Against this field, I was taking many spots, especially on the bubble, where I chipped up the maximum. I was a bit worried about the structure. I didn’t want to get a bad beat and bust, but the cards fell in my favor, so here I am. Two for India today!”

Akshay Kapoor joined Tumboli on the winner’s podium yesterday, clinching his first-ever WPT title in the NLH Single Day tourney. Kapoor’s poker journey is an interesting one. About two years ago, Kapoor moved back to India from Australia at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. He had initially traveled to the Down Under to work on his online game.

Kapoor picked up several scores in the southern hemisphere, including shipping the A$330 NLH MCC Progressive Bounty at the 2019 Marconi Cup Carnival in Sydney. While Kapoor has an impressive litany of online scores, including winning Spartan Poker’s IOPC #93 – Super High Roller, he is yet to finish in the money in a live event on Indian soil. Nevertheless, his emphatic victory in the NLH Single Day indicates many more deep runs in Kapoor’s future.

Speaking of lifting his first live title in Asia, Kapoor said, “It feels great to finally win a live event. I normally grind online now, but this is my first ever live series in Asia, and I binked my first trophy in just my fifth event! It feels great. This one goes out to my poker mentor Danish Shaikh who has a big role in shaping how I play today. Hope I can grab a few more trophies before the end of the series.”

Over and above the two titles, Indians picked up a litany of scores in different events at the festival.

Ankit Jajodia, who has been on an FT spree in Asian tournaments, collected $665 (~₹52,809) for his 11th place finish in the WPT Pot Limit Omaha, posting his second cash of the series.

Meanwhile, Dhaval Mudgal (11th for $1,140, ₹90,530), Young Gun Anmol Mehta (12th for $1,140, ₹90,530), and Avneesh Munjal (15th for $995, ₹79,015) scored in the NLH Single Day event.

Vietnam’s Trong Hieu Ngo won the Mystery Bounty for $35,150.

The Mystery Bounty FT was stacked with Indian pros, with Kunal Patni (5th for $7,850, ₹6.23 Lakhs), Jasven Saigal (6th for $3,690, ₹2.93 Lakhs), and Young Gun Gaurav Sood (8th for $4,190, ₹3.32 Lakhs) claiming the other top payouts.

PokerGuru Ambassador Ankit Wadhawan (12th for $1,565, ₹1.24 Lakhs), Dhaval Mudgal (18th for $1,130, ₹89,736), PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh (21st for $925, ₹73,457), PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot (29th for $650, ₹51,618) and Somashekhar Kurkhepally Nahadeva (30th for $650, ₹51,618) were the other Indians scoring in the Mystery Bounty.

Zarvan Tumboli Wins WPT Pot Limit Omaha For $7,000 (~₹5.55 Lakhs)

Spartan Poker Team Pro Zarvan Tumboli has been in firecracker form over the past few months and has been devouring the action on the South-Asian circuit! Adding to his ever-growing list of titles, the Mumbai-based pro took down the WPT Pot Limit Omaha for $7,000 (~₹5.55 Lakhs)! This also happens to be his first score of the series. What a way to kick-start one’s scorecard!

The $300 buy-in event filled in 94 participants, collecting a $24,619 prize pool. The top 12 places were paid.

Ankit Jajodia, who picked up his first series cash in the NLH Mini High Roller (5th for $8,148, ₹6.46 Lakhs), made his second cash in the WPT Pot Limit Omaha, placing 11th for $665 (~₹52,809).

Tumboli eliminated Korea’s Hye Min Choi in fourth place ($1,908), and Tunisia’s Selim Souissi cleaned out Russia’s Evgenii Chzhen in third place ($2,954) to set up the heads-up match.
