Patience, Discipline & Physical Fitness is What Separates a Great Player From a Good One

December 16, 2019 in Uncategorized

Hi guys, this is Naresh Veeravalli, and I am blogging on PokerGuru for the first time. Let me start by sharing my poker journey. I started playing poker in 2007 as a recreational player and used to play 1$/2$ cash games in Detroit, where I was working in the IT sector.

This continued for 3 years, and I was making small profits. As there wasn’t much content online, I relied mostly on books for improving my game, which frankly helped me a lot. Then I moved back to India in 2010 and was introduced to poker in Goa on a fun trip, and since then, I just kept on playing and turned professional in 2010.

So what separates a great poker player from the good. In my opinion, these three attributes are the most important –

Patience – For me, patience is the most important one. As a poker player, you go through dry spells and rough patches quite often, being patient and understanding that you are in it for the long haul and not the short term is what gets you the success you are looking for. Being patient also prevents you from tilting during the bad phases, which are very common for a poker player.

Discipline – One of the most important traits that separate a good and great player is discipline.
Discipline in terms of the stakes you are playing and not crossing them; Discipline in putting study into the game
Discipline in following a routine consistently, so you perform optimally at your game.
Discipline also prevents you from tilting.

Physical fitness – One of the most underrated aspect I have observed in Indian poker over the years has been physical fitness. There’s an old saying – “a sound body has a sound mind.” You literally have to follow this, eat right, exercise or play a sport, set a good routine and sleeping patterns, all these help you in maintaining good health and will have a significant impact on a poker player’s performance.

To end this blog, I would like to thank Adi and team PokerGuru Staking (Ved, Lungi, and Maddy) for this great opportunity that they have given to the players in improving their game and be the best in the business.

Lockdown! What can you do?

April 3, 2020 in News

With this global pandemic creating chaos everywhere, India has gone into a lockdown which I feel is a great initiative by our government to control the spread. When global superpowers are struggling to cope with it, India has been relatively good at controlling the spread, but these numbers could be way higher as we lack testing and people are not reaching out due to fear of exclusion.

During this lockdown, I have mostly focused on improving my game by watching a lot of content online and implementing it in my game. Also. my mentor Adi’s coaching also helps tremendously. Staying home and less distractions helps me be more focused and I’m able to see the improvement in my game.

So, what can we do during this lockdown?

This lockdown has restricted us to homes and instead of being disappointed about it, use this as an opportunity to do things that you have been procrastinating for a while , now you have TIME. Many things can be done during this time like learning a new hobby, playing a music instrument, learning a new language, catching up on reading stuff that you didn’t have time for and even learning to cook and clean by ourselves. Get rid of bad habits like smoking.

So basically it has given us an opportunity to go back to basics and realise what is really important and what unnecessary things we have been clinging onto.

As a poker player you have ample time to study the game and put volume and improve. Find your leaks and work on them.

Also appreciate what you have and realise what’s really important for you.

This gives us a chance to cleanse ourselves of a lot of negative thoughts and get our mindset in the right place. So look at this as an opportunity to work on yourself and improve as a person everyday.

Every situation gives a unique opportunity, capitalise on it and come out of this lockdown an improved person, poker player and most importantly – a better human being .

Adios!

Breaks Post Lockdown & Studying With Focus

October 29, 2020 in Home Blogs, Featured

Hi everyone, I started playing poker after a 20-day break to focus on my diet, exercise, and just to get some solace from the constant grind these past few months in the lockdown.

With everything shut and lots of time at hand, I played nonstop poker for six months, was burnt out, and lost focus. So, taking breaks is very important as a poker player to regain your focus, plug some leaks by studying, and relaxing. We need to take time for ourselves to help bounce back with better energy.

Right after the break, I shipped Spartan Poker’s Millionaire for my biggest score, and it was a fun ride.

Now that lockdown has come to an end, people have started going back to a normal lifestyle, but the pandemic is still pretty much active. Hence, it’s better to stay home and go out only when necessary and use masks and gloves for your own safety and the safety of people around you.

Studying can’t be emphasized enough for poker players, whether you are a pro or a beginner. It helps you find your errors and work on them to be better and also keeps you updated with all the concepts as poker is an ever-evolving game. If you are not studying and working on your game while playing, you will never improve and fall behind others who are doing so.

Diet, exercise, and proper sleeping patterns are equally essential to improve your performance in poker.

I would urge everyone to focus on their lifestyle and make necessary adjustments to be healthy and be more energetic and focussed on what you love to do.

It’s the last two months left in the year, guys, so make it count and work on whatever you have been procrastinating and welcome the new year with hope and good health!
