WSOP 2023: Jeremy Ausmus Wins Career Sixth Bracelet & Kartik Ved Among the Chip Leaders Advancing to Day 3 in $3K No-Limit Hold’em

Day 22 of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas was packed with riveting moments, despite only one bracelet being awarded.

Jeremy Ausmus‘ gripping victory for his sixth career bracelet undoubtedly stole the show, but the spotlight also shone brightly on the Indian contingent’s performance. Even though the series started slowly for the Indian delegation, the growing number of attendees from the subcontinent has correlated with an increase in strong performances.

Ankit Ahuja‘s remarkable run in the $2.5K Freezeout NLHE remains the only final table appearance by an Indian player in the series thus far. However, Kartik Ved‘s impressive position, holding the sixth largest stack among 109 players advancing to Day 3 of Event #44: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em, presents a tantalizing possibility of another bracelet chase. Ahuja will be accompanying Ved into Day 3 with a middling stack. Known for his knack for turning average stacks into big wins, Ahuja is definitely a player to keep an eye on in the upcoming session.

Event #36: $500 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout saw a commendable display by several Indian participants. Although none advanced to Day 2, Aditya Sushant, Himmat Singh, Naresh Veeravalli, and Zarvan Tumboli added their names to India’s progressively expanding roster of scorers.

Here are the Day 22 highlights!

Jeremy “Chipchecka” Ausmus emerged victorious in Online Event #8: $3,200 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller on WSOP.com after an intense 15-hour contest. Ausmus secured his second online bracelet, becoming only the second player, after Shaun Deeb, to achieve a career-sixth bracelet at the 2023 WSOP. He received a grand prize of $360,036, while Christopher “Ccast93” Castiglia finished as the runner-up, earning $224,632.

The tournament drew 321 participants, accumulating a prize pool of $1,489,600, and payouts extended to the top 54 finishers. Among the notable players who landed in the money were three-time bracelet winner Chance Kornuth (4th for $108,443), the 2021 WSOP Main Event champion Koray Aldemir (6th for $53,030), Tom Marchese (9th for $22,493), GGPoker Ambassador Jason Koon (14th for $14,151), and Jeff Gross (17th for $11,768).

Following another gripping 10 levels of poker, Day 2 of Event #44: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em has ended. Nearly 600 players reconvened at 10 AM (local time) on Tuesday, and 224 late entrants joined in the initial two levels. Once the registration period concluded, the event amassed 1,735 entries, generating a substantial prize pool of $4,632,450. The eventual champion is assured a massive $717,879 and the coveted WSOP gold bracelet.

At the day’s conclusion, Yang Zhang (1,880,000) held the most chips to carry to Day 3 among the 109 players remaining, with Brazilian poker pro Joao Simao (1,830,000) close on his coattails.

Kartik Ved, the standout player from the Indian delegation attending the 2022 WSOP, has had a slow start to his WSOP journey this year. The online bracelet winner has only managed small cash finishes in Event #15: $1,500 6-Handed No-Limit Hold’em (333rd for $2,400), Event #19: $2,500 Freezeout No-Limit Hold’em (118th for $4,387), and Event #26: $800 No-Limit Hold’em Deepstack (571st for $1,400), with a breakout score eluding him.

With the surviving players guaranteed a minimum payout of $6,939, Ved is already on track for his biggest payout of the ongoing series. Nevertheless, with the sixth-largest stack of 1,335,000 heading into Day 3, Ved is well-positioned for a deep run in the tournament, igniting hopes of a bracelet victory for India.

Joining Ved on Day 3 will be Ankit Ahuja (315,000). The 34-year-old is the only Indian to have final-tabled an event in the ongoing series, thanks to his sixth-place finish in Event #19: $2,500 Freezeout No-Limit Hold’em. While Ahuja’s stack might be below-average, he is no stranger to making deep tournament runs from seemingly hopeless positions, so it would be unwise to discount him.

India’s first solo bracelet winner, Abhinav Iyer, was the final elimination on Day 2. He busted 110th with a payout of $6,939. This marks his third cash of the series, bringing his total series earnings to $23,492.

The remaining players will reconvene for Day 3 at 11 AM (local time) on Wednesday.

The opening day of Event #46: $500 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout saw the field of 5,342 unique entries dwindle to approximately 250 hopefuls. All returning participants have secured a cash prize of $1,611, but their sights are set on the esteemed bracelet and the substantial purse of $262,526.

Renowned RunGood aficionado, Preston McEwen, concluded the night at the top of the leaderboard, amassing an impressive 2,040,000 in chips – making him the only player with over 2 Million in the bag. Nicholas Ronalds (1,960,000) and Yita Choong (1,840,000) are close behind, holding the second and third-largest stacks, respectively.

While several Indian players participated in the tournament, none made it through to Day 2. Nevertheless, four Indian competitors managed to steer past the money bubble, with Aditya Sushant (363rd for $1,296), Himmat Singh (562nd for $875), Naresh Veeravalli (693rd for $800), and Zarvan Tumboli (727th for $800) posting cash finishes.

The competition resumes on Day 2 at 10 AM (local time) on June 21, with the remaining players eager to advance their positions.

The fourth day of Event #39: $1,500 Monster Stack drew to a close, with seven determined players remaining in contention for an unscheduled fifth day. Day 4 had 36 players returning to the table, drawn from an original pool of 8,317 entries, with the anticipation of narrowing down to a single champion. Nicholas Gerrity (112,300,000) will spearhead the six other finalists into Day 5, set to kick off at 5 PM (local time) on June 21. The forthcoming champion is poised to claim the prestigious gold bracelet and a staggering $1,162,681 in prize money.

The prestigious Event #43: $50,000 Poker Players Championship, one of the most honored tournaments at the WSOP, is edging closer to declaring its champion. After Day 3, only 12 competitors remain in the running from an initial field of 99 entries, each hoping to secure the lion’s share of the massive $4,727,250 prize pool.

UK’s Matthew Ashton (4,450,000), who won this event in 2013 for an astounding $1,774,089, is well positioned for a repeat, chip-leading the field to Day 4. The action picks up again at 1 PM (local time) on June 21 as the surviving players continue their battle for supremacy and the illustrious Chip Reese Memorial trophy.

Day 2 of Event #45: $1,500 Mixed Omaha Hi-Lo kicked off with 316 contenders, drawn from an initial pool of 1,091 entrants, with only 164 assured a payday. The play was halted after Level 25, with 33 players left vying for the title. Joseph Couden (2,885,000) ascended to the position of chip leader by the day’s end, trailed by Nick Kost (2,010,000).

All remaining players have locked in at least $7,279 while setting their sights on the top prize of $253,651 and the much sought-after WSOP gold bracelet. The goal moving forward is for the 33 remaining players to play down to a champion on Wednesday.

The opening day action in Event #47: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. has concluded. With 836 competitors joining the fray—an uptick from the previous year’s tally of 773—only 285 secured a place for Day 2. These remaining players will be vying for the grand prize of $207,678 and the prestigious WSOP bracelet. However, the immediate aim for the returnees is to land in the money, with payouts set to commence at the 126th position, with a min-cash worth $2,406.

Mike Thorpe (252,500) helms the leaderboard, and Yueqi Zhu (243,000) is not far behind. Day 2 kicks off at 1 PM (local time) on June 21, with the survivors poised for another session of high-stakes competition.

BPT 2022: Young Gun Gaurav Sood Breaks the Live Title Jinx, Wins ₹15K Kickoff For ₹11.25 Lakhs

We all knew it was only a matter of time before the winningest player in online MTTs began his domination on the live felts. And it has finally happened! Young Gun Gaurav Sood (cover image) overcame a 385-entry field in series-opener ₹15K Kickoff at the ongoing Baazi Poker Tour earlier today, banking a personal-best (live) ₹11.25 Lakhs!

Sood entered Day 2 ranked seventh in chips among 18 players. However, by the time the nine-handed final table was formed, he held the chip lead.

Sood’s poker prowess on the virtual felts is the stuff of legends. However, the two-time POY Leaderboard topper has relatively limited live MTT experience. His previous-best live score of ₹4.46 Lakhs had come in the 2020 IPC High Roller, where he finished in 11th place. Sood has also played a few international live MTTs, his most recent finish was at the 2021 EPT Sochi PLO Bounty Event (9th for ₽77,000).

Once again, proving why he is called India’s brightest poker talent, Sood eliminated Prajit Gambhir, Kalyan Chakravarthy, Viney Singhal, and Abhishek Chhajer on Day 2, en-route to facing PokerGuru Ambassador Naresh Veeravalli in heads-up. The finale lasted for about 30 minutes before Sood walked away with the title and the BPT trophy!

PokerGuru Ambassador Naresh Veeravalli may have lost out on the title, but his spirited performance on the final table was truly commendable. The cash game reg had entered the final table with just 1 BB. He spun up his stack through multiple double and triple ups, knocking out Raman Dixit and start-of-day chip leader Niranjan NJ on the final table.

The heads-up between Sood and Veeravalli started with the former enjoying a 2:1 chip lead. For a while, it was even-stevens between the two before Sood eventually edged past Veeravalli, relegating the latter to a second-place finish worth ₹7.88 Lakhs.

We spoke to Sood shortly after the event. You can watch the interview below:

Since the NPS Main Event final table was being recorded, the Big Bounty final table was not live-streamed. However, the heads-up between Sood and Veeravalli was live-streamed, and you can watch the replay below.

The BPT series-opener locked in 385 entries, generating a generous ₹54.29 Lakhs prize pool. Sagar Raj was the next player to fall, and he was taken out by Niranjan NJ in eighth place.

Finishing in seventh place was Viney Singhal, and Piyush Goenka was not far behind in sixth place.

Five minutes later, Raman Dixit‘s lost out to Veeravalli’s that rivered trip eights on the board. Dixit busted out in fifth place.

Despite starting as the Day 2 chip leader, Niranjan NJ couldn’t capitalize on the momentum and eventually made his way to the cash counter to collect the fourth-place payout.

Down to three-handed play, Abhishek Chhajer‘s was no match for Sood’s , with the runout drawing a blank.

Following Chhajer’s third-place elimination, the heads-up was set up between Gaurav Sood (3,500,000) and Naresh Veeravalli (2,260,000).
