Top Five Developments of 2021: Poker Players & Operators Play Their Hand in Fight Against COVID-19

We’re back with the #2 story in our year-end feature, focussing on the top five developments of 2021. In our previous editions, we canvassed the legal challenges for the RMG industry, the return of WSOP and poker invading OTT platforms. In this feature, we highlight how poker players and operators stood up in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sometime around mid-April last year, the country was hit with the second wave of infections. The country’s healthcare structure came under severe pressure, and one of the biggest problems that emerged was the lack of adequate medical facilities and a glaring lack of oxygen support. Amid the mayhem, poker players and operators came out with a united front to contribute towards COVID-19 relief. From hosting charity tournaments and donating the rake collected to raising funds and even donating plasma, the poker community went all-in to help. Players like Anmol Mehta, Akshay Kapoor, Rajneesh Thakur, Shashank Siddharth, Siddhanth Kapoor, and Parth Jain – to name a few – were some who contributed in different ways towards this cause.

The poker brands also stepped in their own way. Spartan Poker was the first domestic online poker site to start relief efforts for the COVID-19 pandemic last March, pledging to contribute a minimum of ₹3 Lakhs every month. The company decided to donate all the rake collected from Windfall tournaments to the cause. PokerBaazi’s O2 Initiative and BLITZPOKER’s COVID-Relief Charity events were some other initiatives by poker operators that went a long way in supporting the needy.

As we enter 2022, the country is struggling with a fresh surge of cases of the variant Omicron. There couldn’t be a better time to look back at the poker community`s contributions towards COVID -19 relief. We have listed out a few significant efforts made throughout the year for the lack of space.

Patrik Antonius Supports Akkaarra Fundraiser

One of the prominent COVID 19 relief efforts was the Akkaara fundraiser organized by Indian high stakes cash game regs and our former Young Guns Rajnish Kumar and Shashank Siddharth. The two poker players launched the NGO Akkaara, intending to provide 10 ambulances across tier-2 and tier-3 cities in India to transport COVID-19 patients.

For this, they aimed to raise ₹70 Lakhs by May 11.

While several Indian players contributed to the cause, the move found a strong international voice of support in Finnish poker superstar Patrik Antonius. The former tennis player and coach put up a post on Instagram on May 4, asking people to contribute towards the worthy cause.

The initiative mustered a good response in a short span and found many takers with Awnish Kumar Singh, Abhishek Mazumder, Irshad Chaudhary, Kanishk Upreti, Harsh Raj, Ankit Jajodia, Rishab Jain, Jaldeep Vadera, Shashank Singh, Manish Jain, Naveen Kumar, and Aneeeh Deshmukh being some poker players who pitched in.

Anmol Mehta & Akshay Kapoor Review Hands For Charity

On May 4, Delhi-based Young Gun Anmol Mehta and Akshay Kapoor conducted a paid MTT hand review session. Incidentally falling a day after Akshay Kapoor’s birthday and a day before Anmol Mehta’s birthday, the session was open to anyone who made a minimal contribution of ₹2,000 to a charity of their choice. A similar initiative was undertaken by Sriharsha Doddapaneni previously.

Both players were moved by the glaring lack of health infrastructure and resources. Delhi was among the hardest-hit cities in India, and Mehta experienced the calamity firsthand after his maternal grandfather passed away due to COVID-19 in January.

The idea, according to Mehta, was also to “spread a little joy while we do the HH review session in a fun and interactive way, we thought it could add more value.”

Kapoor added, “I was organizing a normal hand review, and I get a ping by Anmol that why don’t we do a community review to help raise some funds for COVID-19 and that’s how it started, and within a day, we posted on our socials.”

Mehta and Kapoor actively promoted their donation campaign across social media platforms. The response was tremendous, and they received messages from several top guns of the game who joined the session, making the efforts a worthwhile endeavor!

Siddhanth Kapoor Donates Plasma

In February, Bollywood actor, DJ, and poker player Siddhanth Kapoor tested positive and recovered from COVID-19. The experience got Kapoor thinking how frightful the scenario can get, and he decided to contribute by taking the most direct route – donating his plasma. Kapoor was in Goa through the recovery period, and as soon as he was fit, he donated his blood plasma at the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre.

Sharing a picture of himself at the hospital, Kapoor also urged others who have healed from the infection to follow suit. Plasma transfusion can save critical patients, and Kapoor’s effort made a small but crucial contribution to the COVID-19 support healthcare system. His celebrity status also helped spread the word for plasma donation.

Spartan Poker Donates Rake Towards COVID Relief

Spartan Poker announced that it would donate all the rake collected from Windfall tournaments on the platform in mid-March towards COVID-19 relief. Going with the mantra of “We Fight Together,” the Spartan Poker team pledged to contribute a minimum of ₹3 Lakhs every month, becoming one of the first Indian online poker sites to start relief efforts during the pandemic.

PokerBaazi Hosts “The O2 InitiativePoker Charity Tournament

On May 8, online poker gaming platform PokerBaazi hosted the O2 initiative, a ₹15 Lakhs GTD tournament. The online poker site donated 100% of the fees raised to Give India for procuring oxygen cylinders.

The event registered rousing participation with 1,655 total entries, including 947 unique players that helped raise ₹3.31 lakhs for the cause. Deepak “sabJuwaaHai” Choudhary won the charity event, pocketing ₹2.78 Lakhs for his efforts.

BLITZPOKER Hosts “BLITZ Covid Relief” Charity Tournament to Fight the Pandemic

Online poker site BLITZPOKER was another poker operator to initiate a poker-centric tournament for COVID-19 relief. In May, the brand announced an all-newBLITZ Covid Relief tournament, a ₹249 entry buy-in tourney that ran daily from May 8 to 14 at 10:30 PM, with a ₹75,000 prize pool guarantee.

As part of the move, the site donated twice the rake generated from this tournament. All the proceeds went to the NGO Hemkunt Foundation to provide oxygen cylinders and ventilators to those in need. At the time, BLITZPOKER stated, “We have partnered with an NGO – Hemkunt Foundation, which aims to provide humanitarian aid to marginalized sections of society. You can directly make donations to them through their website.”

MPL Sports Foundation Contributes ₹5 Crore to Virat Kohli & Anushka Sharma’s COVID-19 Relief Campaign

In May, Bengaluru-based Mobile Premier League (MPL) contributed a jaw-dropping ₹5 Crores to the COVID-19 relief campaign started by cricketer Virat Kohli and his wife, Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma. Kohli has been a brand ambassador for MPL since 2019. He, along with Sharma, took to social media on May 6 to announce that they had started a campaign to raise funds for COVID-19 relief in partnership with Ketto called “#In This Together.”

All proceedings for the campaign were to be donated to ACT Grants, an organization working to fill in the oxygen shortage in India. In a video posted across social media platforms, the star couple said, “It pains us to see our country suffer. We are grateful to all the people who are fighting to save India, but they need our help now.”

While the couple contributed ₹2 Crores to the campaign, their fundraiser evoked an overwhelming response, collecting almost ₹3.60 Crores in under 24 hours. Soon, the MPL Sports Foundation stepped in and contributed ₹5 Crores, helping exceed the fundraiser’s initial target of ₹7 Crores. The couple increased their target to ₹11 Crores and eventually raised ₹11.39 Crores for the cause.

Parth Jain Runs #Poker4CovidRelief Campaign

Poker player Parth Jain‘s #Poker4CovidRelief was one of the headline COVID-19 relief charity initiatives taken by a poker player last year. Jain announced the campaign in May. He blogged he would onboard 10 top MTT regulars, and each would play five regular MTTs over 15 days sponsored by websites. The players would contribute 50% of their winnings to the Hemkunt Foundation.

Jain put out the message on his Poker Global Community FB group.

The campaign received an overwhelming response from both players as well as sites, and Jain shortlisted the following players for the cause – Aniruddha Joshi, Kshitij Kucheria, Muskan Sethi, Shivam Jain (Cyflopse), Sanjay Taneja, Pranav Khandalkar, Abhishek Malik, Animesh Thakur, Gitanshu, Neeraj Kumar and Ankit Saurabh.

Many players even agreed to give 100% of their winnings to the cause. Jain also approached the websites and roped in three brands, 9stacks, Calling Station, and PokerDangal.

On May 25, Jain reported the campaign had collected ₹24,000.

Patrik Antonius Voices Concern on the COVID-19 Situation in India; Contributes to Domestic Relief Efforts

The COVID-19 situation in the country is worsening with each passing day. India reported 4,187 fatalities on Friday, only the third country after the US and Brazil to record over 4,000 deaths in a day. More than 82,000 recorded COVID-19 related deaths in the country have been recorded since February 14, more than half of all earlier fatalities. India has recorded more cases in the last 82 days of the second COVID wave than in over a year before that.

In such a devastating situation, people from all walks of life, both from within India and internationally, have come forward to provide as much help as they possibly can to better the situation or at the very least help those who need it the most in these trying times.

Poker players have also been doing their bit to help out in this dire time. Sending some much-needed support all the way from Finland was poker superstar Patrik Antonius. The former tennis player and coach posted on Instagram on May 4, asking people to donate to the ‘Akkaara’ fundraiser organized by Indian high stakes cash game regs Rajnish Kumar and Shashank Siddharth.

The Patrik Antonius Effect

The Finnish poker pro, who started his poker journey in 1999, is considered one of the world’s finest high-stakes cash game players. He is best known for crushing the highest stakes cash games on Full Tilt Poker back in the day and holds the record of playing some of the world`s biggest cash game pots.

Patrik Antonius
Patrik Antonius

Even though Antonious is better known for his exploits on the cash games than tournaments, the former model has still managed to rack up $12 Million in live tournament earnings during his career. This includes the $3.10 Million he banked for finishing runner-up at the 2018 Super High Roller Bowl China.

It is expected that when such a renowned name in the global poker circuit uses this influence to draw attention to a crisis situation, it is bound to get better noticed. Antonius, who has about 68K followers on Instagram, had already reached 3,481 views on his fundraiser post (at the time of posting this report).

About the Akkaara Fundraiser

Akkaara is a socially sensitive lifestyle brand started by high-stakes cash game regs and our former Young Guns, Rajnish Kumar and Shashank Siddharth. The key objective of the Akkaara fundraiser is to provide 10 ambulances across India for the transportation of COVID-19 patients. Besides the shortage of vaccines and oxygen, there has also been a severe shortage of patient transport vehicles in the worst-hit states.

Most critically ill patients are struggling to get an emergency vehicle to the hospital. With hospitals running short of beds and turning away patients, the existing ambulance drivers get caught up in driving between hospitals, with patients and their families, therefore running fewer errands than possible. This is putting even more pressure on the demand for emergency vehicles.

Through the Akkaara fundraiser, the duo Rajnish Kumar and Shashank Siddharth aim to raise ₹70 Lakhs towards COVID relief by May 11. Speaking to us earlier this week, Rajnish Kumar had confirmed how several poker players from the domestic circuit have already contributed to the cause. He had said, “Akkaara is fundraising for a cause that is affecting all, and the one that can bring in some relief to the COVID patients and their families. The last few weeks have been very stressful for most of us, and from where we stand, the future looks grimmer…Now that the world has stepped up to help India with medical equipment and oxygen, we decided to raise funds for the next important thing, ambulances.”

Patrik’s support will undoubtedly help the Akkaara fundraise significantly and hopefully attract more global attention to the worsening situation in India.

COVID Warriors: Poker Players Stand Up in the Fight Against COVID-19

It’s not disheartening; it’s heartbreaking how the second wave of COVID-19 has stung India hard, forcing our healthcare structure to a near-collapse.

Why were we not better prepared? How do we deal with the fact that we are losing our loved ones – friends, family, and acquaintances – to the pandemic for want of essential medical facilities?

As hospitals across the country fill up with patients and more are being turned back each day without treatment, the Indian poker community has once stood up to the challenge with many poker players trying to contribute in any way they can in these dire times.

Shaken by the plight of hospitals, the Delhi-based Anmol Mehta and Akshay Kapoor have planned a hand history session on May 4, open to anyone who makes a minimal contribution of ₹2,000 to charity. Taking a cue from a similar initiative by Sriharsha Doddapaneni last year.

Another COVID-19 warrior is actor, DJ, and passionate poker player Siddhanth Kapoor. A COVID-19 survivor, Kapoor is a strong advocate for plasma donation. The multi-talented Kapoor recently donated his plasma while urging all his friends, followers, and fans to do the same as well.

High-stakes cash game regs Rajnish Kumar and Shashank Siddharth form another determined team that’s hell-bent on defeating the COVID-19 menace. Through their initiative Akkaara, the duo aims to raise ₹70 Lakhs towards COVID relief. Their plan? To raise enough money to buy 10 ambulances for the transportation of COVID-19 patients to healthcare facilities.

While the rising death toll these past few weeks is a grim reminder of the grave situation the country is dealing with, speaking to these brave and determined COVID warriors made my day. I request all our readers to give these efforts due consideration and, if possible, do contribute to the causes generously!

Anmol Mehta & Akshay Kapoor: Seeking Donations For Hand History Review

Young Gun Anmol Mehta and Akshay Kapoor have joined hands for a fundraiser for COVID relief. The duo will be doing a paid tournament hand history review on May 4, which incidentally falls a day after Akshay Kapoor’s birthday and a day before Anmol Mehta’s birthday.

The review session starts at 4 PM. All interested in joining can do so by making a minimum donation of ₹2,000 to a charity of their choice. The players will need to message Akshay Kapoor (on social media) with proof of their donation to get access to the session.

Anmol Mehta reiterated that the glaring lack of health infrastructure and resources pushed them to the idea. “Hospitals are falling short of oxygen, and even getting a bed is so difficult. Seeing so much suffering around us, near and dear ones getting sick, including my maternal grandfather who passed away due to COVID this January,” Mehta said.

Anmol Mehta

He underlined – “I felt that people really want to help out this cause, however sometimes they can’t due to lack the incentive. So, we decided that however little we know about the game, we could spread some basic strategies through a Hand History review session. Also, due to the lockdown, there has really been a lack of human interaction, so just to spread a little joy while we do the HH review session in a fun and interactive way, we thought it could add more value.

Akshay Kapoor added, “Anmol and myself do talk a fair bit about the game here and there, and since we both are from Delhi, we have been discussing the impact of Covid-19 since the cases around us, and in fact, the whole country increased drastically. We both saw how the whole nation was suffering because of a shortage of health equipment and proper care for the people in need. I was organizing a normal hand review, and I get a ping by Anmol that why don’t we do a community review to help raise some funds for COVID-19 and that’s how it started, and within a day, we posted on our socials.”

He added – “A lot of my friends’ relatives have lost their lives, and some are fighting with it, so it is very hard for us that we cannot help them in these circumstances.”

Akshay Kapoor
Akshay Kapoor

Akshay Kapoor pointed out that he got the idea from Sriharsha Doddapaneni, who ran a similar initiative last year. Both Mehta and Kapoor have been actively promoting their donation campaign across social media platforms. According to Mehta, the response has been great so far. “We have received messages even from the top guns of the game who want to join in for the session, so it should be a fun one!

I am looking forward to learning from each other. People can join in and out as they please, as everyone has their own schedule as well!

Mehta is counting on a good number of poker players signing up so that they can muster up enough funds to make a difference. “People always perceive this game to be an individual and sort of a self-serving mind sport, so hopefully this time around, instead of just taking maybe we can give back even if it’s a little bit and show our generous side as well!”

Kapoor threw in more details on the session – “We intend to start at 4 PM and go for long so people can join in at whatever time convenient to them.” You can join the HH session at https://discord.com/invite/BdqZpC49Fn

Siddhanth Kapoor: Donate Plasma & Save Lives

Bollywood actor (and passionate poker player) Siddhanth Kapoor was in Goa when he tested positive for COVID-19 in February. While anyone who has gone through the trauma of being infected will be shaken, to say the least. For Kapoor, he is making the most of the opportunity. The actor cum poker player recently donated his plasma at the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre.

Siddhanth Kapoor
Siddhanth Kapoor – donating plasma

Kapoor shared a picture of him in the hospital and urged others who have healed from the infection to do the same. “Donated Plasma today! Please come ahead and donate it if you are eligible!”

It may seem like a small move, but plasma transfusion can save critical patients. Kapoor’s effort was applauded by his friends and family, including sister Shraddha Kapoor.

We asked him about the move, and he responded, “My motivation was simple. if you get the choice to go ahead and save someone, it’s an effortless way, not at all painful, so must explore it.”

Kapoor recalled, “When I had COVID-19, it was quite something since I had lost my sense of taste and smell completely. Post that, also I had to take care since post-COVID care is critical, so just keep that in mind, guys. If you have the opportunity or you’re eligible to go and donate plasma please do that, don’t stop yourself.”

Rajnish Kumar & Shashank Siddharth: Raising 70 Lakhs For 10 Ambulances

High-stakes cash game regulars and former Young Gun`s Rajnish Kumar and Shashank Siddharth seem to have gone all-in to fight the ongoing pandemic. Through their socially sensitive lifestyle brand, Akkaara, the two players plan to raise funds for 10 ambulances to ferry patients to medical facilities in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Sharing more details, Rajnish Kumar said, “Akkaara is fundraising for a cause that is affecting all, and the one that can bring in some relief to the COVID patients and their families. The initiative has been able to muster a good response in a short span. In less than 24 hours after making the fundraising call, they was able to raise ₹4.5 Lakhs, and have raised ₹6.3 Lakhs so far. The goal is still far, though – to make the vision of 10 ambulances happen, they need at least ₹70 Lakhs. And the duo has set the project deadline as May 11.

“We will review our project on May 11, 2021,” Kumar told us. In his message to players, Kumar emphasized, “It’s a testing time for all of us as a community. Let’s help each other in this hour of need.”

The cause has already found many takers with Awnish Kumar Singh, Abhishek Mazumder, Irshad Chaudhary, Kanishk Upreti, Harsh Raj, Ankit Jajodia, Rishab Jain, Jaldeep Vadera, Shashank Singh, Manish Jain, Naveen Kumar, and Aneeeh Deshmukh being some poker players to have made contributions.

You can also lend a helping hand to Akkaara’s novel initiative by making a donation. Check out the fundraising call by Akkaara and donate to the cause here.
