This Week in Poker: August 18 – 24

In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!

We are now in the last week of August and also the final week of the WPT Online India Series. The mega series dominated the action on the virtual felts and, unsurprisingly, the single biggest score of the week belonged to the champion of the ₹80 Lakhs GTD WPT India Highroller, PokerGuru Ambassador Vishal Bajaj. The former Millionaire champion pocketed a career-best ₹21.60 Lakhs and ran deep in two more events to tally up more than ₹25 Lakhs in weekly winnings. For his phenomenal performance, Vishal Bajaj is our PokerGuru Star of the Week!

Vaibhav Sharma, Sumit Sapra, Srihari Bang, Amit Kaushik, and Rishab Malik were among the other big weekly scorers.

With August just days away from ending, September promises to be equally action-packed, with Spartan Poker and PokerBaazi announcing flagship events.

First up will be Spartan Poker’s Final Table Series (FTS) that returns for its third edition from September 10 to 19. Promising ₹12 Crores in prize pool guarantees across 30 events, the FTS 3.0 will return replete with massive GTD`s, exciting prizes, and enjoyable live streams.

At the same time, for the small-mid stakes players, PokerBaazi’s Indian Micro Poker Series (IMPS) Gold Edition brings a plethora of events to choose from. Putting up ₹3 Crores in guaranteed prizes across its 15-day-run (September 12 to 26), the IMPS has event buy-ins starting as little as ₹55 and with satellites to the series running for a meager ₹1 buy-in.

While the established poker sites are always coming up with lucrative offers and promotions, the recently launched, IndiaPlays, has also been doling out attractive bonuses to pull in the crowds.

Asia’s biggest online poker room, Natural8, is offering packages to the scheduled WSOP Live edition in Las Vegas as a part of the WSOP Amazing Race promotion.

After the landmark judgment passed by the Madras High Court on August 3, the court’s Madurai bench stated it expects the Tamil Nadu government to introduce a new law prohibiting online gaming within six months.

Moving on to the international sphere, the GGPoker/Natural8-leg of the 2021 WSOP Online Series has already run through 16 bracelets events, with four of them concluding this past week.

Over to the live tournament action, 10-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Ivey claimed his first live poker tournament title of the year after taking Event #1: $25,000 Short Deck of the 2021 Super High Roller Bowl (SHRB) Europe for $408,000.

Renowned poker coach and Raise Your Edge (RYE) founder Benjamin “bencb789” Rolle was announced as PokerStars’ latest brand ambassador on August 19.

Online Rankings: Vishal Bajaj Dominates the Weekly Charts, Gaurav Sood Completes Second Week at the Top of the Monthly & Yearly Standings

In this feature, we bring you to the top three weekly, monthly, and yearly performers every Sunday. These rankings are based on cumulative winnings (cashes). However, the rankings only include players registered to our online ranking system, so if you haven’t signed up on PokerGuru yet, hurry up and register!

This weekend feature has turned into a fan column for Gaurav Sood, and rightfully so! The 25-year-old Young Gun has been crushing the online MTTs for over 17 months now, and the former dentist completes his second consecutive week ranked #1 on the yearly and monthly charts today. Gaurav Sood is the winningest player on our database and the only one with over ₹3 Crores in recorded annual winnings. He added ₹5.32 Lakhs this past week (excluding his runner-up finish in the WPT Table for 6 on August 21), improving his annual tally to ₹3.19 Crores.

Sood has strengthened his lead over the #2 ranked Manish Lakhotia by over ₹20 Lakhs. Not just that, he happens to be the most profitable player of the year with ₹1.59 Crores in profits (and counting) – a distinction he held almost all through last year as well. If all of this was not enough to make this poker superstar stand out, the dentist-turned poker pro boasts a whopping ₹9.90 Crores in online earnings, over ₹1 Crore more than anyone else on our tracked database.

The top-order on the annual leaderboard stays the same, with Manish Lakhotia and PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh sitting at the #2 and #3 positions, respectively.

Moving on to the monthly standings, here again, Gaurav Sood topped the charts on the back of his trailblazing run last week. And even though he had a relatively lackluster week, it was enough to keep him in the lead with ₹67.76 Lakhs in recorded winnings, includes ₹49.71 Lakhs in monthly profits. The latest IOPC – The Crown champion.

Vaibhav Temani stays put at #2 on the monthly charts with ₹58.14 Lakhs in winnings. Temani profitable a ginormous 55.79 Lakhs in the IOPC showstopper at the start of the month and tops the monthly profit charts on this account. PokerGuru Ambassador Vishal Bajaj sits at #3 in the monthly standings.

The coaches at PokerGuru Staking call Vishal Bajaj the most promising talent at the stable, and the young pro has been living up to that enviable reputation. August has been nothing short of fantastic for Bajaj, who made early inroads with a runner-up finish in the WPT India Mini Highroller for ₹9.60 Lakhs on August 5. Two weeks later, he got his hands on the elusive WPT trophy after winning the WPT India Highroller for a career-best ₹21.60 Lakhs on August 20. Vishal Bajaj`s WPT India Highroller score makes him the top-ranked player of the week with ₹25.78 Lakhs in recorded winnings. With the more experienced Vishal Bajaj dominating the weekly charts, the new PokerGuru Staking recruit, Deepankur Gupta, sits behind him at #2 on the weekly rankings. Gupta won Spartan Poker`s The Millionaire last Sunday for a career-best ₹17.76 Lakhs, becoming the sixth player from the stable to take down the weekend flagship this year. On Friday, Sumit Sapra became the sixth player to cross the ₹8 Crore mark in annual winnings after his runner-up finish in the WPT India Highroller. The seasoned pro caps off the top three places on the weekly charts!
