This Week in Poker: March 10 – 16
In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.
Here are this week’s top stories!
The third week of March witnessed a lot of edge-of-the-seat action, with Spartan Poker’s Final Table Series (FTS) 2.0 and PokerStars India’s MicroMillions wounding down to a scintillating close.
Headlining this week’s top winners predictably is the FTS Main Event champion, Siddharth Karia. The Young Gun traversed a field of 622 entries in the ₹2 Crores GTD event to take home not just a career-best ₹32.26 Lakhs cash prize but also an 18K diamond-studded Gold Medallion, a customized Game Face, and an exciting hamper! For his stellar run, Karia is deservedly our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”
The 29-year-old MTT pro had entered the FTS Main Event final table with the third largest stack and ended up striking a heads-up deal with runner-up Avinit Bagri to win the prestigious title. Avnit Bagri came extremely close to clinching the FTS Main Event title but had to contend with an equally impressive second-place payout worth ₹30.19 Lakhs.
Kushagra Mehta was one of the most consistent players at the FTS 2.0. Twice in the series, he came close to grabbing the FTS title, namely in the FTS#2 Kick-Off (runner-up for ₹9.03 Lakhs) and the FTS#11 Big Game (runner-up for ₹10.37 Lakhs). He wrapped up the series by placing third in the FTS Main Event for ₹17.24 Lakhs. His phenomenal performance has propelled him on top of the March leaderboard standings with ₹37.55 Lakhs in winnings (₹35.92 Lakhs in profit).
The two-time Millionaire champion Manish Lakhotia had made his way into the top three of the yearly leaderboard last week. He has steadily made his way to the top, dislodging the IOPC The Crown winner, PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh, from the top seat. Lakhotia presently has ₹1.03 Crores in annual winnings (₹23.83 Lakhs in profits) – and is only ₹59,749 ahead of Singh in annual earnings.
Most of the top scorers this week are big winners from the FTS 2.0. This includes Sumit Sapra, Rohit Agrawal, Ramesh Rao Thotapalli, Arjun Pasricha, Young Gun Anujkumar Kodam, Kumar Vatsal, Young Gun Shardul Parthasarathi, PokerGuru Ambassador Devvrat Arya, and the FTS 2.0 leaderboard topper Pulkit Goyal.
PokerStars India’s ‘Star of the Month’ March leaderboard race closed out Week #3 on Sunday with the 2020 India Poker Champion Rubin Labroo headlining the 25 qualifiers. Karan Malhotra and Sanish Chhabra ranked second and third in the leaderboard standings.. The March race has entered its final week, with the Finale to take place on March 24 at 9 PM.
The FTS 2.0 has ended, but Spartan Poker continues to roll out attractive offers and promotions for its user base. On popular demand, Spartan Poker has extended its cash game promotion, the ₹1 Crore Cash Club by three weeks (March 5 – 31).
Asia’s largest online poker room, Natural8, will also be churning out $8.8 Million in promotions all through March. The site, which is a top skin on the GGPoker Network (GGPN), is running $100 India-exclusive freerolls every Saturday (5:30 PM IST). That`s not all! The site will be hosting two online series simultaneously, the Vietnam Series of Poker (VSOP) Series (March 13 – 21) and the Omaholic Series 2021 (March 14 – 28).
Speaking of promotions, PokerBaazi has come on board as Associate Sponsors with IOS Boxing Promotions to host India`s first Las Vegas-style pro-boxing event – the ‘Battle on Ship 2021’. The event will see boxing champion and RummyBaazi Ambassador Vijender Singh defend his 12-0 winnings streak against Russia’s Artysh Lopsan, on March 19, in a super middleweight (76kg) showdown. The match will take place on the rooftop of the Majestic Pride Casino in Goa.
While the virtual felts have been dominating most of the action, live poker tournaments finally made a comeback in Goa with the DPT Xpress last week. The series had a record-smashing run from March 11 to 14 onboard Casino Deltin Royale. The series was off to a great start, with the series-opener ₹5K Burn N Turn registering 333 entries. Jaipur-based Shrey Baj claimed his career-first live title for a ₹3.35 Lakhs payday. The ₹10K Bounty title was captured by Sandeep Ramesh for ₹2.75 Lakhs, while Gautham Raju won the ₹10K Deepstack Turbo for ₹4.30 Lakhs.
The star attraction of the series, the ₹15K Main Event, locked in an impressive 421 entries. Ramesh Rao Thotapalli won his first major live title at the event, banking ₹12.04 Lakhs. Thotapalli has been crushing both the live and online felts lately. Two days before taking down the DPT Xpress Main Event title, Thotapalli came close to winning his first FTS title in the FTS Highroller, finishing third for ₹12.51 Lakhs.
In the other top developments, mobile gaming company Nazara Technologies’ much-awaited Initial Public Offering (IPO) opened for subscriptions today, making it the first Indian gaming firm to be publicly listed. The IPO is an offer for sale (OFS) of up to 52.9 Lakh equity shares by the company’s shareholders and promoters, and the issue closes on March 19.
The first of the three delayed WPT Main Event FTs from last year finally played out on March 10. The 2020 WPT Gardens Poker Championship found a winner in the San Diego-based player Markus Gonsalves, who won his first-ever WPT title and a personal-best $554,495 cash prize.
In other news, the Twitter feud between Vanesa Kade and Dan Bilzerian took a new turn on March 9 when GGPoker canceled the former’s affiliate account. The move led to a lot of drama on the microblogging site. After facing a lot of criticism, the site eventually came out with a six-paragraph statement defending its position. Needless to say, that too backfired with the poker community asking GGPoker to fire Bilzerian.
Online Railbird Report

Deltin Poker Tournament (DPT) Xpress 2021
Following a year-long hiatus brought on by the COVID-19 induced lockdown, live poker tournaments returned to Goa with the 2021 DPT Xpress series on board the Deltin Royale.
The showstopper of the series, the ₹15K Main Event, took place on March 15 and was taken down by well-known player Ramesh Rao Thotapalli. The funnyman ran through the 421-entry field to clinch his career-first live title for a ₹12.04 Lakhs top prize.

And with this, we conclude this week’s roundup of the latest news updates and developments from the world of poker. We will return again next week with our weekly report. Stay tuned.
DPT Xpress 2021: Ramesh Rao Thotapalli Bests Record 421 Entries in Main Event to Win His First Major Live Title & ₹12.04 Lakhs
The first domestic live stop of the year is finally in the books. The just-concluded Deltin Poker Tournament (DPT) Xpress brought live tournament poker back in Goa after an almost yearlong gap, and the bet paid off handsomely for the organizers. With record-shattering turnouts on all four days, the series set a new attendance benchmark in all events, more than doubling the previous best numbers recorded at past DPTX editions!
The Business Head of Poker at Deltin Royale, Manish J. Adnani, was ecstatic with the player turnouts when we spoke to him after the series. “The series’ numbers were surely past my expectations,” he said. “It was overwhelming to see this kind of participation, especially the 421 entries in the Main Event. Many players also made it for the event through satellites on Adda52. The team has worked relentlessly to deliver a great experience,” Adnani added.
After the two side events earlier in the week, the weekend action mainly was centered on the series` ₹15K Main Event. The Main Event held two starting flights on Saturday, and both of them registered record fields, hitting 421 entries (Day 1A – 250, Day 1B – 171) – over twice the 205-entry benchmark set at the DPTX Main Event in June 2019.
One-hundred-and-eight survivors returned for Day 2 on Sunday, and funny man Ramesh Rao Thotapalli (cover image) laughed all the way to the bank after beating them all to win his first live title and the lion’s share of the ₹58.05 Lakhs prize pool worth ₹12.04 Lakhs!
The 30-year old Thotapalli currently resides in Goa. He had entered the FT third in chips and single-handedly eliminated six of his eight FT opponents to win the DPTX trophy. Sameer Agarwal finished runner-up for ₹2.90 Lakhs.
Thotapalli is better-known for founding the popular Facebook group Indian Poker Bakchods. He has over a decade-long experience in playing live poker, but he has stuck to playing cash games for the most part. While his Hendon Mob profile list only two live cashes picked up in 2017 at Melbourne, he is well-known for his exploits in Bengaluru’s local tournaments in 2016. That said, the DPTX Main Event victory is not only Thotapalli’s biggest live tourney win; he has also broken new ground by clinching the DPTX trophy!
Talking to us, Thotapalli shared that he’s been going through a challenging phase in his personal life this past month and was really looking forward to playing at the DPT. “I just wanted to play the series and entered with a fresh mind,” he said, underlining that once he made it to the FT, he was pretty confident of making it to the top.
Thotapalli, who is full-time into organizing cash game festivals in Kolkata and Goa, when he’s not playing poker, added, “I had a good stack, to begin with, and was familiar with most of the players on the FT, knew their style…played solid, enjoyed every hand I played. It was never about the money. It was more about the title. I had to take down a title in India, so I’m glad that if not too early, finally I have it!!”
Interestingly, three of the past four DPTX Main Event champions, namely, Ankit Jajodia, Anant Purohit, and Deepak Raina, had made Day 2 in the Main Event. All three of them finished in the money, with Purohit and Raina making it to the FT!
The Sunday DPTX schedule also featured the ₹10K Deepstack Turbo. Here again, first-timer Gautham Raju was the last player standing as he topped the 171-entry field to win ₹4.30 Lakhs.
The resounding success of the DPTX will undoubtedly lead the way for other brands in lining up their live events. Adnani dropped a strong hint that an announcement for Deltin Royale’s flagship DPT series is on the horizon. Alluding to this, he said, “It was great to bring live tournament poker back to life in 2021. I am extremely happy with the event. All our teams have put in their best, and the results speak for themselves.
Look forward to announcing DPT dates in the coming few weeks. Hopefully, we can pull off DPT soon in the coming months based on the COVID situation going forward.”
₹15K Main Event – Day 2
The series’ showstopper, the ₹15K Main Event, logged in a record field of 421 entries across its two starting flights on Saturday, collecting an impressive ₹58.05 Lakhs prize pool.
The hearty participation ensured that the DPTX Main Event paid out over 50 places for the first time. The top 53 finishers pocketed a payday with a min-cash worth ₹25,310.
A little over a fourth of the starting field, i.e., 108 survivors (Day 1A – 62, Day 1B – 46), returned for the final day on Sunday. The musician-turned-MTT pro Dhaval Mudgal (2,54,100) – the Day 1B chip leader – entered Day 2 as the start of the day chip leader. J Raju (247,800), the second chip lead on Day 1B, held the second largest stack.
Day 2 began at 5 PM on Sunday, and it took three levels to reach the money. The hand-for-hand play on the money bubble ended with Suffraz Alam and Shiv Chug’s double-elimination on separate tables. Both players shared the 53rd payout worth ₹25,310, also winning the Main Event bubble contest to collect an Adda52 gift hamper each.
Some of the early ITM bustouts included Siddhanth Kripalani (51st for ₹25,310), Saumil Krishnani (49th for ₹25,310), Sankalp Marwah (46th for ₹25,310), Himanshu Gupta (43rd for ₹28,740), Varun Devayya (41st for ₹28,740), Akash Singhal (39th for ₹28,740), and Archit Garg (38th for ₹28,740).
Adda52 streamer Shivam Jain (24th for ₹47,890), Kshitij Kucheria (20th for ₹56,890), Guruprasad Gupta (17th for ₹68,210), Hetal Desai (16th for ₹68,210), Amit Dhal (15th for ₹83,020), Sanjay Mohan (14th for ₹83,020), J. Raju (13th for ₹83,020), Deepak Singh (12th for ₹99,850), and Vinay Jain (11th for ₹99,850) were some other players who posted a deep run.
There were three former DPTX Main Event champions in contention, and the March 2019 DPTX Main Event champion Ankit Jajodia (18th for ₹68,210) was the first of them to fall. The June 2019 DPTX Main Event champion Anant Purohit (39 BB) and the defending DPTX Main Event champion Deepak Raina (31 BB) made it to the FT.
The FT was a stacked one, with the series-opener Burn N Turn runner-up Nikunj Doshi getting a second shot at the title as he led the final nine with 79 big blinds (19,85,000). Thotapalli was third in chips with 40 big blinds, former WPT Vietnam Main Event champion Dhaval Mudgal (31 BB) and online regs Mohak Kapoor (38 BB) and Shivam Shukla (56 BB) also had decent stacks to maneuver.
Final Table Chip Counts
- Nikunj Doshi – 19,85,000 (79 BB)
- Shivam Shukla – 14,05,000 (56 BB)
- Ramesh Rao Thotapalli – 10,00,500 (40 BB)
- Anant Purohit – 9,80,000 (39 BB)

- Deepak Raina – 7,65,000 (31 BB)

Final Table Recap
The shortest stack on the FT, Avinash Sharma, was the first player to be eliminated, and all his chips landed with Ramesh Rao Thotapalli.
Dhaval Mudgal and Deepak Raina doubled up before Raina lost his tournament live in eighth place. The defending Main Event champion hit tips with ace-ten, but Shivam Shukla’s pocket treys improved to a full house to win the pot.
The other former DPTX Main Event champion Anant Purohit didn’t last long either. His pocket jacks were cracked by Thotapalli’s ace-king in seventh place.
Next up, Nikunj Doshi was eliminated in sixth place by Shivam Shukla.
Sitting in the chip lead, Thotapalli took over a commanding advantage after scoring three back-to-back eliminations. He eliminated Mohak Kapoor, Shivam Shukla, and Dhaval Mudgal in fifth to third place, respectively.
With an overwhelming chip lead, Thotapalli soon dispatched his heads-up opponent Sameer Agarwal to win the Main Event title.
The final hand saw Agarwal jamming his 16 big blind-stack, and Thotappali called it off.

DPT Xpress 2021: Shrey Baj Outlasts 333 Entries to Win Maiden Live Title in the Series-Opener ₹5K Burn N Turn
After a near-year-long hiatus, live poker tournaments have returned in Goa with the 2021 Deltin Poker Tournament (DPT) Xpress. The four-event series kicked-off last evening on board the Deltin Royale, with the series-opener ₹5K Burn N Turn. The last domestic live stop before the COVID-19 induced lockdown was the DPT Xpress February Edition that took place at the same venue between February 27 – March 1, 2020.
The series got off to a fantastic start with the ₹5K Burn N Turn recording 333 entries last night! A much better turn out than the previous edition’s 197 entries, basically going to show that Indian poker enthusiasts have been itching for live tournaments! Jaipur-based Shrey Baj (cover image) emerged as the first champion of the 2021 DPT Xpress series!
Baj entered the final table in the second chip lead behind eventual runner-up Nikunj Doshi; following two quick knockouts on the FT, in Sachin Kinger and KN Suresh, he took over the chip lead just before the heads-up match started. While Doshi did steal away the lead from Baj early on, in the end, Baj overcame Doshi to walk away with his career-first live title and the ₹3.35 Lakhs cash prize.
Several familiar faces were seen in the fray, including Shivam Jain, Vineet Kumar, Gaurav Gupta, Abhishek Garg, poker coach Abhishek Goindi, former DPT Xpress Main Event champion Anant Purohit and 2020 IOPC The Millionaire United winner Siddhanth Kripalani.
The series has three more events lined up until March 14, and if the series-opener is any indication, the 2021 DPT Xpress will be packed to the brim with electrifying action. Perhaps this series will act as the much-needed catalyst for other live stops like the IPC and BPT to come out of hibernation.

Final Table Recap
Firoz Khan was the first player to fall out of the nine-handed final table, with Ritesh Khatwani following him to the rail next.
Abhishek, Siddharth Ranshevre, and Gaurav Jain were all eliminated in quick succession during Level 23.
It took three more levels of play before India’s poker crusader, KN Suresh, was sent packing in fourth place by Shrey Baj. The elimination propelled Baj into the chip lead.
Soon after that, Sachin Kinger’s got busted by Baj’s pocket kings. Kinger’s third-place exit set up the heads-up between Baj and start-of-the-final table chip leader Doshi.
Baj’s back-to-back eliminations of Suresh and Kinger got him the edge over Nikunj Doshi heading into the final showdown. Doshi did whisk away the chip lead from Baj at one point, but the latter quickly won it back. It did not take long for Baj to deliver the final blow and win the title.
On the final hand, Baj limped from the button, and Doshi jammed his remaining stack. Baj quickly called.
