My poker journey & training under the best – Aditya Agarwal

March 8, 2019 in News

Hi, my name is Parikshit Dhall and my journey in poker has been nothing short of enthralling, to say the least. When I was in college, I heard about this game of poker from a few of my friends who started playing it recreationally. Out of sheer inquisitiveness, I decided to join them one day just to see what was so gripping that all my friends would make it an everyday affair to play it.

The game looked interesting to me and I decided to play it on Facebook to get acquainted with the rules. It wasn’t long before I started playing it among my friends and soon it became a passion for me too. With time I started raising the stakes slowly and almost after two years of grinding at the smaller levels, I decided to visit a poker club in Kolkata. I was nervous and tense but I held my own that day and with some discipline, I managed to make a positive score that day itself. This gave me the confidence to play amidst the more skilled players regularly and fortunately for me, it was the correct choice. I started playing more frequently across different tables in Kolkata and also made a few trips to the casinos in Goa and Gangtok which also boosted my bankroll.

I was doing a job for a private limited company in Kolkata but all along the way, I knew where my heart was. For many aspiring poker players, I’m sure choosing between work and poker can get daunting at times, but in my mind, I had made a choice about what I wanted. It was equally important for me to get approval from my parents.

After some initial reservations (which am sure all parents have), and after me explaining to them as to why I wanted to take this up, they agreed and I must say I am very fortunate to have such parents who have backed me to chase my dreams. Getting into online MTT’s on a regular basis was a conscious decision on my part and in the last 8 months, I shipped 3-4 events on the Indian sites which got me really pumped up. But then again this sport has its own variance, so there were slumps on the way too. Getting into the PokerGuru family was the best thing I could have hoped for because getting trained by Aditya Agarwal aka Intervention is every Indian player’s dream. I hope my journey can just take off from here so that I can keep doing what I enjoy the most for the rest of my life.

Hunger Games

June 28, 2019 in News

It has hardly been a year since I started playing MTT’s seriously and regularly. I had all through my poker life been a pure cash game player. Even taking to online poker was a new adaptation for me as you all know, live and online poker are almost two different sides of a coin. My journey in MTT’s started on a beautiful note as I shipped three high-value tournaments in my first three months itself. I used to play on my own back then and without any kind of staking or external coaching.

My poker journey seemed to be going great for me until the inevitable happened. Variance caught up with me post-December last year, and that is when I slowly began to understand that taking up MTT’s professionally was going to be a different battle altogether. I pretty much took a horrible downswing which compelled me to change my course of action.

As they say, there is light at the end of the tunnel, I got a lucky break. I had applied to be tutored and mentored under PokerGuru Staking batch 2, and I got through. Life since then has totally changed.

Getting in-depth training from the best in the country is such an enriching experience. With every passing day, I get to learn something new. Applying these methods over a while and improving my game in a much better way than before is really satisfying. There is something new to learn, and the limit to learn and improvise is endless.

Last 3 months have been kind to me as I have managed to get in good scores regularly, but the most essential thing is to keep the hunger going and never be satisfied. I see all the top players around me now in Vegas battling it out at WSOP, and it is my biggest aim now. I really am aiming to put in the hours and slog the entire year, so that I am ready for the next edition in 2020.

Turning pro has been the most personally satisfying decision that I have taken, and I indeed want to do full justice to it. To everyone out there who is going through downswings, I would just want to say that never give up since this variance is part and parcel of this game and with due diligence and effort the sky will be the limit.

Until next time, ADIOS friends.

A Beginning That Should Hopefully Last Long

April 21, 2020 in News

Hello guys, it’s been a long time since I posted a blog on PokerGuru. The last 5-6 months have been quite a journey, and I have been through a lot of ups and downs.

A little backstory, I was a cash game player who turned into a full-time MTT player under the guidance of my coach Aditya Agarwal and I have to admit, it has been an enormous learning curve for me.

Learning and experiencing the variance in the game has been one of the most significant aspects for me when turning into a full-time professional poker player as you have to deal with the ups and downs daily. To be honest, my scores in the last 5-6 months were not up to my expected level, and I was working a lot on my volume and was devoting a lot of time to studies.

So here I am, after 6 months, having achieved my personal best score to date as I won The Millionaire this Sunday on Spartan Poker. It’s a great feeling because I knew that a big score was around the corner, I just had to work my way through, and here we are! 🙂

This lockdown has resulted in a massive boost to the guarantees of all the tourneys across the sites, and the guarantees keep getting crushed. Spartan Poker being one of the leaders in the poker industry, never fails and keeps us hooked, and I was really looking forward to playing this event.

Thankfully I played well, navigated some crucial spots in the middle stages, and on the FT, it was a really tough battle though I kept my nerve and tried to keep my chip lead throughout. I am very happy with the way it panned out.

I am thankful to my coach Aditya Agarwal for being there, pushing me to the limits, and trying to get the best out of me. Kartik Ved, Maddy, Lungi bhai, all have been there supporting me throughout, and I would like to thank everyone at PokerGuru Staking for helping me to be the player I am today and really looking forward to better results in future. This is just the beginning and a beginning, which I hope will last for a long time.

The Indian poker community is growing leaps and bounds, and we have loads of opportunities today! I want to wish everyone the best of luck. Alright then, that’s the update for now, good luck to everyone!
