This Week in Poker: October 27 – November 2

In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!

The festival of lights is here. With the entire country busy in celebrations and late-night card parties, the online poker action seems to have taken a back seat – something visible in the declining turnouts in online MTT`s. The online gaming ban in Karnataka has only compounded this.

However, this week`s biggest story was Team India`s fantabulous run at the 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP). But before we get into that, let’s quickly sum up the week`s biggest online winners.

The #2 ranked player of the year, Manish Lakhotia, emerged as the week`s top scorer. The two-time ‘The Millionaire’ champion final-tabled an impressive seven events this week, rounding up 15.16 Lakhs cumulatively, thereby grabbing our PokerGuru Star of the Week title.

That aside, the week`s single-biggest score belonged to the latest The Millionaire champion, Abhinay Devarakonda, who shipped the weekend flagship for 14.96 Lakhs.

Kapil Arora, PokerGuru Ambassador Arjanveer Singh Chadha, Deepesh Raka, PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh, Young Gun Gaurav Sood, and Vinay Rajpal were the other names on the top of the weekly charts.

Keeping in line with the festive theme, most online poker platforms have come up with Diwali-themed promotions and offers. These include:

  • After announcing the third edition of The Millionaire Series (November 21 – 28), Spartan Poker rolled out Diwali Bomber promotion (October 30 – November 10) for first-time depositors
  • PokerStars India is bringing back the Diwali Rush Series for a shorter four-day sprint (November 5 – 8), with 1.70 Crores GTD across 29 events. There is also a 3 Lakhs added leaderboard race
  • Cash game fanatics can enjoy BLITZPOKER’s Diwali Cash Bomb Leaderboard promotion (November 1 – 15). Players can win over 2 Lakhs in rewards, which includes 1 Lakh in Game Bonus
  • Up-and-coming online poker site, IndiaPlays launched its Diwali Deposit offer (November 1 to 7), promising 100% rakeback on all deposits of 1,000 or more
  • The fantasy sports giant Mobile Premier League`s poker arm, MPL Poker, looks ready to take on the ‘bog boys’ by rolling out MTTs on its platform on October 27

 

India`s longest-running poker league, the Poker Sports League, is returning for Season 4 in a new “phygital” format. Online qualifiers on Hashtag Poker will run from November 25 to December 29, and the season finale will take place live from February 7 to 13 at a yet undisclosed location.

Coming to the 52nd Annual WSOP, the Indian contingent in Las Vegas made its presence felt at the series this past week. While Young Gun Abhinav Iyer’s 12th place in Event #56: $10K 6-Handed NLHE Championship for $41,481 (~31.09 Lakhs) was the biggest score posted by an Indian at the ongoing series thus far, Young Gun Neel Joshi, PokerGuru Ambassador Shuchi Chamaria, Nipun Java and Abhishek Goindi also bagged commendable scores. In fact, MPL Poker Ambassador Dhaval Mudgal was among the 40 finalists on Day 3 of Event #61: $600 Deepstack Championship NLHE, but he fell out in 30th place.

Brian Rast (Event #51: $3,000 6-Handed NLHE for $474,102), Ben Yu (Event #56: $10K 6-Handed NLHE Championship for $721,453), Farzad Bonyadi (Event #49: $10K No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship for $297,051), and Anatolii Zyrin (Event #55: $400 Colossus for $314,705) were some of the notable bracelet winners this week.

 

Online Railbird Report

The Diwali celebrations are in full swing, and after a muted season last year due to the pandemic, the festivities have been grander this year. However, the festivities have put a dent in the online poker action, with most players opting for home parties and live poker sessions instead of grinding the online MTT`s.

Speaking of the week`s top scorers, Siliguri-based pro Manish Lakhotia seems to have embarked on an intense online grind, and the results are pouring in! Lakhotia FT-ed an impressive seven tourneys this week, which includes one title win and one runner-up finish. His biggest score of the week was the 3.78 Lakhs he won after taking down Trending Thursday. Lakhotia earned no less than 15.16 Lakhs this week, bagging our “PokerGuru Star of the Weektitle.

Abhinay Devarakonda grabbed the week’s single-biggest score in Spartan Poker`s The Millionaire, winning the weekend flagship for a personal-best 14.96 Lakhs. Devarakonda outran the 1,580-player field on Sunday and chopped the title heads-up with Kapil Arora.

Kapil Arora`s runner-up finish in The Millionaire for 12.53 Lakhs made him one of the top winners this week.

Poker Sports League (PSL) Announces Season 4, Teases a New Phygital Format

Poker Sports League, the country’s first-ever poker league, has announced Season 4 that will be held in an all-new “phygital” avatar. There will be six PSL teams in the upcoming season, each comprising 11 players, competing for a prize of 2 Crores.

Online qualifiers will be hosted on the Hashtag Poker app from November 25 to December 29. A total of 180 players will be chosen from 15 online qualifier matches, and 30 will be selected for six PSL teams. The season finale will be played live from February 7 to 13, 2022.

WSOP 2021

The 52nd annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) is now 36 days running, and over 60 bracelet events have already been awarded. There were several standout winners this week, and one of them was 39-year-old Brian Rast, who overcame a 997-strong field in Event #51: $3,000 6-Handed NLHE to earn his fifth WSOP bracelet and $474,102 in prize money.

Team India posted a commendable seven ITM finishes this week. While Iyer’s 12th place score in Event #56 was the most significant score posted by an Indian over the week, many other Indian challengers ran well. Poker pro and coach Abhishek Goindi made it to Day 3 in Event #55: $400 Colossus along with 48 others and eventually fell in 47th place for $6,120 (~4.57 Lakhs).

The same day, the Team of Nikita Luther and Kunal Patni placed 15th on Day 2 of Event #59: $1,000 Tag Team, cashing $4,576 (~3.42 Lakhs).

Another bracelet sweat developed in Event #61: $600 Deepstack Championship NLHE that saw four Indians led by Dhaval Mudgal make it to Day 2. While Shuchi Chamaria (57th), two-time bracelet champion Nipun Java (92nd), and Abhishek Goindi (384th) made ITM finishes, Mudgal crashed out in 30th place for $7,120.

Abhinay Devarakonda, Kapil Arora, Yash Chitre, Ankit Khattar, Puneet Mishra & Laksh Pal Singh Bank the Top Sunday Scores

While Team India is steadily posting scores at the ongoing 52nd Annual World Series of Poker (WSOP), the traffic on the domestic online felts has witnessed a slight decline. Spartan Poker`s popular The Millionaire made a comeback after a two-week break this weekend. Abhinay Devarakonda championed the 1,580-entry field to win his first major title on Spartan Poker and a career-best ₹14.95 Lakhs. He chopped the title heads-up with Kapil Arora (2nd for ₹12.53 Lakhs), while Yash Chitre finished third for ₹7.02 Lakhs.

The other Spartan Poker flagship, the Sunday SuperStack, was taken down by Ankit Khattar for ₹5.65 Lakhs. He chopped the title heads-up with Puneet Mishra (2nd for ₹5.09 Lakhs).

Young Gan Karan Radia topped the charts on Adda52 after winning the Adda52 Millions for ₹6.89 Lakhs. The #3 ranked player of the year, PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh, came second for ₹4.10 Lakhs.

The former Millionaire winner Rishab Malik shipped PokerBaazi’s BSS SuperStack for ₹3.78 Lakhs. The inaugural INCOOP Main Event champion Sanish Chhabra secured ₹3.36 Lakhs as the runner-up, courtesy of a heads-up deal.

Moving over to PokerStars India, Lavesh Meena was the last player standing in Sunday Special PKO and won ₹2.56 Lakhs. The winningest player on our tracked database, Young Gun Gaurav Sood, came out on top in the Sunday Highroller, winning the title for a second time for ₹2.83 Lakhs.

Ashit Sharma, Parag Shah, Shagun Jain, Aayush Arya, Sanjeeta Kumari, Piyush Nanda, Aniruddha Joshi, Yuvraj Bhardwaj, Kovid Saraswat, and Aditya Sharma won the other Sunday marquees.

After almost nine hours of non-stop playing, Ankit ‘Asymptote05’ Khattar was the last player standing and bagged a winner`s payday worth ₹5.65 Lakhs. The two-time Adda52 Millions winner struck a heads-up deal with Puneet ‘potpoker’ Mishra (2nd for ₹5.09 Lakhs), pushing his tracked online winnings to ₹96.44 Lakhs, (₹31.12 Lakhs in corresponding profits).

Spartan Poker`s UVS Diwali Blast is finally in the books. One of the featured events on the last day of the series, the ₹15 Lakhs GTD UVS#46 Everest, saw the two-time Mega Stack (Millionaire Bubble) champion Ashit ‘D. Carwin1’ Sharma walking away with the title and a ₹2.65 Lakhs payday. The event logged in 2,191 participants across 10 starting flights, overlaying ₹4.04 Lakhs.

PokerBaazi’s Sunday showstopper, the ₹20 Lakhs GTD BSS SuperStack, fell three entries, i.e., ₹15,000, short of meeting its listed guarantee last night. After over eight hours of play, the former The Millionaire champion Rishab ‘ryuk’ Malik topped the 397-entry field to win ₹3.78 Lakhs. He chopped the title heads-up with another former The Millionaire champion Sanish ‘Sanish21’ Chhabra (2nd for ₹3.36 Lakhs).

The last day of the Baazi Grinders Series crowned six champions. The biggest of them, the ₹6 Lakhs GTD Grinders#40 Main Event, logged in a 625-entry field to collect a guarantee-crushing ₹7.81 Lakhs prize pool, over 30% more than the advertised guarantee. The user ’tiltplay’ was the last player standing and won ₹99,512 following a three-way deal involving ‘barbaad777’ (2nd for ₹1.06 Lakhs) and ‘allineveryone’ (3rd for ₹1.13 Lakhs).

’tiltplay’ now has ₹8.72 Lakhs in recorded winnings on PokerBaazi and ₹2.84 Lakhs in site profits.

Aniruddha ‘PocketAcesAJ’ Joshi (Won Grinders#39 6-Max ₹1 Lakh GTD for ₹30,354), ‘zpAAced’ (Won Grinders#41 ₹1 Lakh GTD for ₹28,118), Yuvraj ‘Yuvi0069’ Bhardwaj (Won Grinders#38 ₹60K GTD for ₹10,899), Kovid ‘fzzzyyy’ Saraswat (Won Grinders#42 Turbo ₹50K GTD for ₹10,022), and ‘Sunyp’ (Won Grinders#37 ₹10K GTD for ₹2,175) won the other Grinders Series titles.

The ₹3 Lakhs added Grinders’ leaderboard was taken down by Kuldeep ‘don_31’ Kumar for ₹1 Lakh. Kumar played all 42 events at the series and cashed in 25 of them, topping the leaderboard convincingly with 3,692 points. The Monday action was slow as usual but should definitely pick up as India’s biggest tournament; the ₹5 Crore GTD EndBoss commences its second edition of PokerBaazi tomorrow.

Coming to the Monday chartbusters, Sanjay Kumar championed Adda52’s Iron Man for ₹1.80 Lakhs (heads-up deal).

The user “sanapalbhar” fired four bullets in Spartan Poker’s ReCharge before coming out on top to win a personal-best ₹1,63,608. Last week’s ReCharge runner-up finisher Mohit Mehta stood second again for ₹1.09 Lakhs.

Chandan Arora championed PokerStars India’s Battle Royale for ₹1.05 Lakhs. He placed fourth in PokerBaazi’s Daily Night SPRINT to make away with over ₹1.20 Lakhs last night.

The EndBoss seventh-place finisher Priyank Kothari clinched Spartan Poker’s Deepstack title for ₹89,849, beating Yash Wadhawan heads-up.

Tanmay Benara took down Adda52’s Voyager for ₹70,508 courtesy of a heads-up chop. He cashed in two more events, raking in almost ₹88K overall.
