APT Summer Festival Hanoi: Kamal Kumar Sogani Wins India its 5th APT Trophy of the Series in Event #22, Zarvan Tumboli Chip Leads 45 Players to Day 3 in Championships Event
Team India has well and truly extended its Vietnam rush by pulling out another dominating run at the ongoing 2022 Asian Poker Tour (APT) Summer Festival Hanoi – VSOP. With four APT trophies already in the bag, Kamal Kumar Sogani became the fifth Indian to lift the coveted trophy after winning Event #22: PLO on Thursday for VND 67.90 Million (~₹2.32 Lakhs)
The series is just two days away from powering down. From the looks of Team India`s performance in the ongoing VND 4 Billion GTD Championships Event, it looks like the team will be closing out the series with a bang.
A group of 16 Indians led by Spartan Poker Team Pro Zarvan Tumboli returned on Day 2 of the Championships Event, and it was an eventful Friday for the team. A total of 11 Indians have advanced to Day 3 (currently underway), and not just that, seven of the ten names on top of the start-of-day chip counts were Indian players. And guess what?! Tumboli headlines the 45 survivors with a monster stack of 1,151,000.
The Mumbai-based player who won a career-defining WPT Prime Vietnam Main Event title in May was fifth in chips at the start of Day 2 and steadily climbed up throughout the day. He crossed 1 million in chips after winning a crucial hand – making a hero call on a king-high board with pocket tens. He won the pot, beating Nguyen Ngoc Dai, and went on to eliminate compatriot Young Gun Kanchan Sharma to assume a commanding chip lead heading into the penultimate day of the tournament.

PokerGuru Ambassador Ankit Wadhawan (809,000) and APT Vietnam Hanoi Main Event champion Young Gun Shardul Parthasarathi (726,000) round out the top three stacks among the 45 survivors.

Former APT champion Akshay Nasa (663,000), Deepak Bothra (653,000), Alok Birewar (481,000), and Rubin Labroo (431,000) are the other Indians among the top 10 stacks.
Also making it through were Event #10: High Rollers Single Day champion Sajal Gupta (369,000), Rising Star Ritwik Khanna (204,000), Jayraj Ninama (151,000), and PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot (123,000).
Day 3 of the Championships Event began at 11 AM (local time) today, and the plan is to play down to the eight-handed final table. The money bubble will burst at 30th place with 29 places paid.
In the other side events, Korea’s Seo Jeungu shipped Event #21: NLH Single Day for VND 82.67 Million (~$3,532), while Vietnam’s Pham Song Hau championed Event #23: Deep Stack Turbo for VND 76 Million (~$3,240).
Zarvan Tumboli Chip Leads 45 Players Advancing to Day 3 in Championships Event
Eighty-seven players returned on Day 2 of the VND 4 Billion GTD Championships Event. Along with the 79 late entrants joining the action during the first three levels of Day 2, the event drew a record-setting field of 288 entries, blowing away its advertised guarantee by collecting a whopping VND 9,777,600,000 (~$416,866) prize pool. With only 29 players assured a payday, the competition on Friday was intense.
The Spartan Poker Team Pro Zarvan Tumboli was the frontrunner among a group of 16 Indian qualifiers converging after the two starting flights. He wielded his massive stack brilliantly to climb into the chip lead by the end of the day`s play.
At one point on Day 2, Tumboli spun up to over a million in chips after making a hero call on a king-high board with pocket tens, scooping the pot off Nguyen Ngoc Dai. He next dispatched compatriot Young Gun Kanchan Sharma with his pocket jacks crushing the latter’s pocket nines.
By the time the bags were brought out, only 45 remained in the field, and Tumboli held the overnight chip lead with a massive stack of 1,151,000.
It was a dominating run by the team overall, with the subsequent top stacks also belonging to Indian players, i.e., PokerGuru Ambassador Ankit Wadhawan (809,000) and APT Vietnam Hanoi Main Event champion Young Gun Shardul Parthasarathi (726,000).
Simultaneously, Akshay Nasa (663,000), Deepak Bothra (653,000), Alok Birewar (481,000), and Rubin Labroo (431,000) carried above-average stacks to Day 3.
Another four Indians, namely, Event #10: High Rollers Single Day champion Sajal Gupta (369,000), Rising Star Ritwik Khanna (204,000), Jayraj Ninama (151,000), and PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot (123,000) made the cut for Day 3, making for a total of 11 Indians among the 45 qualifiers heading into Day 3.
On the flip side, Young Gun Kanchan Sharma, PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh, Ankit Jajodia, Siddarth Singhvi, Jasven Saigal, Anuj Yadav, and Kamal Kumar Sogani failed to advance further.
Day 2 was packed with exciting moments. Former APT champion Akshay Nasa clashed with high roller Hieu Ngo several times. He eventually eliminated the latter, ensuring himself a big stack for Day 3.
Another talked-about journey on Day 2 was that of former APT Main Event champion Hue Dang (676,000), who spiraled down to just 20 big blinds halfway through the day. Dang eventually bagged the fourth-biggest stack.

The 2022 Asian Poker Tour (APT) Summer Festival Hanoi – VSOP is two days away from going down the history books, and Team India looks eager to close out the series on a strong note.
Thursday saw another two side events crown champions, while the VND 4 Billion GTD Championships Event ran its second starting flight, Day 1B. Event #18: Deep Stack Hyper Turbo champion Amit Kaushik almost repeated Zarvan Tumboli`s back-to-back feat from last month with his deep run in the very next event, Event #19: Super Deep Stack Turbo. The poker pro from Kurukshetra fell two places short of the title, cashing VND 50.64 Million (~₹1.73 Lakhs) in third place. In Event #20: Deep Stack Hyper Turbo, Malaysia’s Chang Xiang Guang overcame a 53-player field to win the title and VND 62.48 Million (~$2,665).
As we publish this report, Day 2 of the Championships Event is well underway. Day 1B brought in 131 players, and 59 of them bagged stacks for Day 2. While initially scheduled to visit Las Vegas for the 2022 WSOP, visa issues forced him to change his travel plans to Vietnam instead, and what a godsend it turned out to be. The Mumbai-based poker pro wrote his name in the history books as the first-ever WPT Prime champion after winning the WPT Prime Vietnam Main Event in May and followed it up by taking down two events in last month’s APT Vietnam Hanoi festival.
While Tumboli is third in chips from the Day 1B qualifiers, he is well positioned to chase the title since he is fifth overall among the 87 survivors (including the 28 qualifiers from Day 1A) from the two starting flights combined.
Team India in almost guaranteed at least a few deep runs in the Championships Event as apart from Tumboli, another 12 Indians advanced through Day 1B. The list includes several notable names like PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot (178,400), Alok Birwar (154,300), PokerGuru Ambassadors Ankit Wadhawan (137,700), and Laksh Pal Singh (63,400), Jasven Saigal (57,000), Ankit Jajodia (55,900), Event #16: Deep Stack Hyper Turbo champion Siddarth Singhvi (52,300), APT Vietnam Hanoi Main Event champion Shardul Parthasarathi (47,500), Young Gun Kanchan Sharma (44,200), Deepak Bothra (38,400), Rubin Labroo (36,100), and Sajal Gupta (23,100).
Added to three Indian qualifiers from Day 1A brings the total Indian head count for Day 2 of the Championships Event to 16.
