APT Summer Festival Hanoi: Kyle Bao Diep Wins Mystery Bounty; India`s Shardul Parthasarathi, Jasven Saigal, Rubin Labroo & Ritwik Khanna Cash the Series-Opener

Tournament action has again fired up in Vietnam with the 2022 Asian Poker Tour (APT) Summer Festival Hanoi – VSOP now well underway at the VSOP Club in Hanoi. The 29-event series commenced its run on July 12 and will continue until July 24.

The results of the first two events are already in! Local player Kyle Bao Diep bested the 252-entry field in the VND 1.5 Billion GTD Mystery Bounty to lift the first APT trophy of the series and VND 520.66 Million (~$22,260).

The victory didn’t come easy for Kyle Bao Diep, who had to battle accomplished pro Pham Tien Dung heads-up. However, it took Diep a little over 30 minutes to walk away with the title! Along with winning the APT trophy, Diep has catapulted into an early lead in the APT Player of the Series (POS) standings.

On the sidelines, Nguyen Hoang Nam took down Event #4: Deep Stack Turbo for VND VND 36.84 Million (~$1,575), and the eventual runner-up Tran Manh Hung, collected the same, courtesy of an even heads-up deal.

Vietnam has become the hotbed of tournament action in Asia, and the ongoing series is the third major festival taking place in the country this year. Indian pros put up a strong show at the two live tournament stops, the first-ever WPT Prime Vietnam (May 19 – 30) and the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Vietnam Hanoi (June 7 – 19).

A total of seven Indians, including the reigning APT Vietnam Hanoi Main Event champion, Young Gun Shardul Parthasarathi, were among the 49 players returning on Day 2 in the Mystery Bounty. Four among them crossed the money line, and Parthasarathi ran the deepest, pocketing VND 30.03 Million (~₹1.02 Lakhs) in ninth place. Parthasarathi was also the only Indian player to collect bounties on Day 2. His total winnings in the event stood at VND 36.03 Million (~₹1.23 Lakhs), including VND 6 Million in bounties.

Jasven Saigal (11th for VND 20.85 Million, ~₹71,005), Rubin Labroo (22nd for VND 12.07 Million, ~₹41,104), and Rising Star Ritwik Khanna (26th for VND 10.06 Million, ~₹34,259) were the other Indians who cashed the series-opener.

PokerGuru Ambassador Ankit Wadhawan, the freshly appointed Spartan Poker Team Pro Zarvan Tumboli, and Ankit Jajodia were others who busted before the money bubble burst.

Team India has tasted resounding success in Vietnam in recent years, but 2022 has seen the best showing by the team ever. It all started with Zarvan Tumboli shipping the WPT Prime Vietnam Main Event for a career-best VND 3.050 Billion (~₹1.02 Crores) towards the end of May. He bested compatriot PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot, heads-up.

The team carried that form to APT Vietnam Hanoi last month, with Shardul Parthasarathi lifting the Main Event trophy. The first-ever WPT Prime Main Event champion, Tumboli, grabbed back-to-back titles at the stop, winning Event #17: Deep Stack Hyper Turbo and Event 18: Pot-Limit Omaha. Alok Birewar’s victory march in Event #13 NLHE 2 and Ankit Jajodia’s four final table appearances, including a deep run in the Championships Event, made for a hugely successful series for the team.

With four cashes in the APT Summer Festival Mystery Bounty, Team India seems to have started right where it left things last month!

The Mystery Bounty registered a guarantee-crushing 252-player field across its two starting flights (Day 1A – 134 and Day 1B – 118), with the top 26 finishers digging into the hefty VND 1,995,520,000 prize pool. A min-cash was worth VND 10.06 Million.

From the prize pool, VND 756,000,000 was kept aside for the mystery bounty rewards that kicked in after the money bubble burst, and the jackpot bounty was worth VND 154.40 Million.

Vietnam’s Nguyen Tuan Anh claimed one of the top bounty prizes after eliminating India’s Rubin Labroo in 22nd place.

The eight-handed final table took off following the elimination of Shardul Parthasarathi, whose ace-queen were busted by Nguyen Van Chien’s ace-king.

The final table was live-streamed on a delay on APT’s YouTube channel. You can watch the FT replay below.

Final Table Recap

Phan Tien Dung scored the first knockout, eliminating Chang Xiang Guang in eighth place.

Up next, Nguyen Van Hoang sent Le Xuan Huy, followed by Nguyen Tuan Tai out in seventh and sixth places, respectively.

Diep got to work by eliminating Nguyen Van Hoang and Nguyen Van Chien, aka ‘Joker,’ in fifth and fourth place.

Now that live poker is back with a bang, we can expect a sizable Indian contingent at the upcoming WPT Vietnam, given Vietnam’s popularity as a preferred poker destination for Indian players.

The desi pros have met with massive success as previous WPT Vietnam edition, especially players like Akshay Nasa, Sumit Sapra, Aditya Agarwal, Zarvan Tumboli, Rubin Labroo, Abhinav Iyer, Kalyan Chakravarthy, Jaideep Sajwan, PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh, and Vaibhav Sharma – to name a few.

Topping the list of Indian finishes at WPT Vietnam is the MPL Poker Pro Dhaval Mudgal, who championed the 2018 WPT Vietnam Main Event for a personal-best VND 2,427,580,000 (~₹76.02 Lakhs) on October 2, 2018. Talking to us about his travel plans for the series, Mudgal said, “I will be traveling to WPT post the IPC Megstacks, so the schedule is hectic. I will play most events after getting there. Numbers ought to be huge. I am looking forward to playing all events with a shot clock; it seems a large Indian contingent will be there.”

From May 15, Vietnam has lifted all precautionary requirements related to COVID-19. All players need now is proof of vaccination to enter the country. All the more reason we can count on a bumper edition at the Crown Poker Club in Hanoi!

Indian Participation – What to Expect?

The series will be the first well-attended Asian live tournament series by Indians after the COVID-19 pandemic. PokerGuru spoke to several domestic pros and found that many are already at the IPC Megastacks and are planning to fly out to Vietnam directly from Bagdogra after the series.

An old hand at the APT and WPT Vietnam stops in Vietnam, Sumit Sapra is among the Indians who have confirmed his attendance at the WPT Vietnam. Sapra, who finished runner-up in the 2018 WPT Vietnam Welcome Event, is playing the IPC Megastacks and heading to Vietnam right after. Sharing his plans, Sapra said, “I’m expecting 10-15 Indian players at WPT. Planning to play the Main and the HR, not sure about other events right now, will depend on the schedule, but I might stay back for APT in June and Hanoi.”

The WPT Vietnam 2018 Ho Chi Minh Cup champion Zarvan Tumboli is another top pro confirmed not only for IPC Megastacks and WPT Vietnam, but he plans on staying back in Hanoi for APT Vietnam (June 7 – 19).

Another seasoned international poker traveler, Kunal Patni, is currently participating at the IPC Megastacks and planning to head straight to Vietnam on May 25. “Playing only the Main Event, High Roller, and a couple of side events for WPT,” Patni told us.

Spartan Poker Team Pro Nikita Luther will be skipping the upcoming WPT Vietnam altogether. While Luther is busy at IPC Megastacks, the 2019 WPT Vietnam Kickoff runner-up finisher Rubin Labroo and fourth-place finisher Jaideep Sajwan will not be playing IPC Megastacks and WPT Vietnam.

The two-time annual leaderboard topper Young Gun Gaurav Sood was honeymooning in Bali and has reached Hanoi for WPT Vietnam directly from there. According to him, “It will be pretty good IMO as live poker’s coming back after a while.”

Alok Birewar, who had finished third in the Superstack Turbo at the September 2019 WPT Vietnam, has also confirmed his participation at the Asian stop.

Among the other Indian pros confirmed to attend the upcoming series are Young Gun’s Kanchan Sharma and Shardul Parthasarathi, India’s first bracelet winner Aditya Sushant, Romit Advani, and Vaibhav Sharma.

From PokerGuru Staking, MTT pros Mithun Mahesh, Vishal Bajaj, Ashish Munot, Ashish Ahuja, Ankit Wadhawan, Kartik Ved, and Laksh Pal Singh will be in attendance.

We had reached out to Rubin Labroo a few days ago to confirm if he would be defending his IPC Main Event title at the soon-to-start IPC Megastacks. While we were disappointed to hear he won’t be making the trip to Nepal, we know now that this won`t keep him away from the spotlight.

As a precursor to what we hope will be a busy week for the MTT reg, the former PPL Main Event champion took down two headline tournaments yesterday.
