This Week in Poker: October 27 – November 2

In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!

The festival of lights is here. With the entire country busy in celebrations and late-night card parties, the online poker action seems to have taken a back seat – something visible in the declining turnouts in online MTT`s. The online gaming ban in Karnataka has only compounded this.

However, this week`s biggest story was Team India`s fantabulous run at the 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP). But before we get into that, let’s quickly sum up the week`s biggest online winners.

The #2 ranked player of the year, Manish Lakhotia, emerged as the week`s top scorer. The two-time ‘The Millionaire’ champion final-tabled an impressive seven events this week, rounding up 15.16 Lakhs cumulatively, thereby grabbing our PokerGuru Star of the Week title.

That aside, the week`s single-biggest score belonged to the latest The Millionaire champion, Abhinay Devarakonda, who shipped the weekend flagship for 14.96 Lakhs.

Kapil Arora, PokerGuru Ambassador Arjanveer Singh Chadha, Deepesh Raka, PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh, Young Gun Gaurav Sood, and Vinay Rajpal were the other names on the top of the weekly charts.

Keeping in line with the festive theme, most online poker platforms have come up with Diwali-themed promotions and offers. These include:

  • After announcing the third edition of The Millionaire Series (November 21 – 28), Spartan Poker rolled out Diwali Bomber promotion (October 30 – November 10) for first-time depositors
  • PokerStars India is bringing back the Diwali Rush Series for a shorter four-day sprint (November 5 – 8), with 1.70 Crores GTD across 29 events. There is also a 3 Lakhs added leaderboard race
  • Cash game fanatics can enjoy BLITZPOKER’s Diwali Cash Bomb Leaderboard promotion (November 1 – 15). Players can win over 2 Lakhs in rewards, which includes 1 Lakh in Game Bonus
  • Up-and-coming online poker site, IndiaPlays launched its Diwali Deposit offer (November 1 to 7), promising 100% rakeback on all deposits of 1,000 or more
  • The fantasy sports giant Mobile Premier League`s poker arm, MPL Poker, looks ready to take on the ‘bog boys’ by rolling out MTTs on its platform on October 27

India`s longest-running poker league, the Poker Sports League, is returning for Season 4 in a new “phygital” format. Online qualifiers on Hashtag Poker will run from November 25 to December 29, and the season finale will take place live from February 7 to 13 at a yet undisclosed location.

Coming to the 52nd Annual WSOP, the Indian contingent in Las Vegas made its presence felt at the series this past week. While Young Gun Abhinav Iyer’s 12th place in Event #56: $10K 6-Handed NLHE Championship for $41,481 (~31.09 Lakhs) was the biggest score posted by an Indian at the ongoing series thus far, Young Gun Neel Joshi, PokerGuru Ambassador Shuchi Chamaria, Nipun Java and Abhishek Goindi also bagged commendable scores. In fact, MPL Poker Ambassador Dhaval Mudgal was among the 40 finalists on Day 3 of Event #61: $600 Deepstack Championship NLHE, but he fell out in 30th place.

Brian Rast (Event #51: $3,000 6-Handed NLHE for $474,102), Ben Yu (Event #56: $10K 6-Handed NLHE Championship for $721,453), Farzad Bonyadi (Event #49: $10K No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship for $297,051), and Anatolii Zyrin (Event #55: $400 Colossus for $314,705) were some of the notable bracelet winners this week.

Online Railbird Report

The Diwali celebrations are in full swing, and after a muted season last year due to the pandemic, the festivities have been grander this year. However, the festivities have put a dent in the online poker action, with most players opting for home parties and live poker sessions instead of grinding the online MTT`s.

Speaking of the week`s top scorers, Siliguri-based pro Manish Lakhotia seems to have embarked on an intense online grind, and the results are pouring in! Lakhotia FT-ed an impressive seven tourneys this week, which includes one title win and one runner-up finish. His biggest score of the week was the 3.78 Lakhs he won after taking down Trending Thursday. Lakhotia earned no less than 15.16 Lakhs this week, bagging our “PokerGuru Star of the Weektitle.
