The IOPC July Edition Blaze of Glory runner-up finisher Vijay took down his second title of the month with the Sunday Highroller win, netting a ₹2.76 Lakhs top prize. In total, Vijay raked in ₹4.13 Lakhs in Sunday winnings after three more deep runs, crossing ₹1.09 Crores in lifetime online earnings!

The 22-year-old from Udaipur got introduced to poker while he was studying engineering in college. A chance encounter with the game during one of the college festivals in 2018 got Vijay completely hooked, and he even went on to win the first-ever poker event he played!

As they say, there has been no looking back for him since, with his passion for the game only growing.

Speaking of his first time playing the game, Vijay shares, “There was a poker tournament going on during the college fest, and I just sat to play and luckily finished first in the event. I developed an interest in poker from that day, and until now, I have not looked back.”

And even though his first love is coding, Vijay is passionate enough about poker to ensure that he doesn’t miss any flagship series.

The pandemic hit us all, but it was extremely tough for Vijay, who lost his father around six months back. Sharing learning taught to him by his dad, Vijay said, “My dad always used to tell me, have patience, Ashwin. If you keep patience, things will fall into place, and my goal is to build patience to be able to succeed in every aspect of life.”

With the dream of winning the WSOP Main Event one day and making India proud, Vijay is gradually laddering up the charts and honing his skills. And if his current form is any indication, this is a player who is definitely going places.

Vijay has had to make adjustments to make time for poker with a busy work schedule. Currently, he plays only on the weekend after getting time off work as a software engineer in a Pune-based start-up. Speaking of his regular poker sessions, he tells us, “I usually get time after 6 or 7, so I pick the big tournaments and play those. I usually do not play all the tournaments. My primary focus is on the highest GTD events”.

Vijay likes to review his hand histories and learn from his mistakes to hone his skills and spends most of his non-working hours playing online poker.

Speaking of his successes so far, he says, “There is no specific secret, but you have to focus on your weaknesses and get your hands reviewed and realize what the mistakes you’re making. Learn from the mistakes in the past. And one day, eventually, you will get the success from there.”

He further adds, “I follow a lot of content on YouTube and read a lot of books about the poker players. Among international pros, I like Andrew Matthews & Bencb and follow their content. In India, I follow Gaurav Sood & Arsh Grover. So usually, I play with them every weekend, and I can see that they are very tough opponents to beat.”

Suffice it to say that his efforts have paid off handsomely, and even though he does not have any live poker experience, he aspires to win international titles one day.

Sharing his views on the future prospects of his poker journey, he elaborates, “I do look forward to turning pro one day, and maybe in 1-2 years, I will become a full-time poker pro.”

A BIG shoutout to Vijay on his smashing form, and we wish him all the best for his future poker aspirations!
