Usually, these motivation booster posts feature the biggest Sunday winners, but gracing today’s post is one of the only players in the domestic circuit to have won both Spartan Poker’s The Millionaire & PokerBaazi’s MoneyMaker. Yes, you guessed right, we are referring to Anujkumar Kodam!

The former Young Gun topped the 411-entry field in Spartan Poker’s ₹40 Lakhs GTD Sunday Superstack for ₹7.09 Lakhs, following a heads-up deal with the user ‘MysticRiver’ (2nd for ₹6.36 Lakhs).

Talking about his Sunday grind, Kodam revealed that while he was playing the Sunday Superstack, he went out for a walk with his wife and even met up with his friends! Mad multi-tasking skills, we say!

“It was a funny one! Basically, around 8 o’clock, all my tables were done. I was just playing one table, but I was chip leading with a massive stack. Namita (his wife) came and just asked me, ‘Are you playing?’ I was like, ‘I am only on one table, so let me just shift this to the phone, and then we’ll go for a walk.’

“So, then we went for a walk, met friends. Just playing on the phone and managed to do well.” Literally walking himself to a ₹7 Lakhs payday!

The Bengaluru-based pro has been around the circuit for some time now. Boosting over ₹2.50 Crores in online earnings, besides championing The Millionaire and MoneyMaker, Koddam has also shipped marquees like Adda52 Millions, AOPS Mega Suits, IOPC Destiny, etc.

Recapping his poker journey, the IIM Calcutta alumnus said, “I started playing full-time in 2017 and continued that for about three years. I had stopped earlier this year and had switched from tournaments to cash games. Though I mostly still played tournaments. From April of this year, I stopped playing full-time. Now I just play over the weekends.”

“I started playing poker with live cash and then got into tournaments. In 2017-18, I played cash for about eight months to a year. More so from the standpoint of me wanting to switch my mindset. The mindset coach I found, Nick Howard, was mainly coaching cash. So, I didn’t care so much about what format I am playing. I just wanted to get into a good mindset and was willing to do anything for that. So, that’s when I played low-stakes cash, and it was super helpful. Once I got myself into a good zone, I realized that tournaments are something that I am personally interested in. I then switched more into tournaments,” he added.

Sharing his views on the upcoming generation of poker pros, Kodam said, “To talk about (Gaurav) Sood, I am big fan firstly. I have reached out to him and told him also. I asked him to coach me. He couldn’t find time for me, but I was happy to have that conversation. The consistency of it is like – killer. Like not only just topping last year but coming back and doing it again.”

“There are a bunch of people doing really well. I think overall, PokerGuru Staking as a stable also brought out really top-notch players. Not just in the Indian circuit, but also internationally.”

Taking a break from poker, Koddam founded Wall.app in March 2021. Speaking about his latest venture, Koddam stated, “There was this one question which I kept getting asked when I was playing poker was ‘How did you start playing poker? Why did you leave your job at Ola?’

“It was just a natural transition for me that I felt like this is something which I felt pulled towards. Wall happened like that for me. Wall is basically a social commerce platform of Web3. If you think about Facebook and Instagram, all these interactions are happening there; it’s all the data, all the images are owned by Facebook. With what’s happened in the Web3 technology, you can decentralize all of this information, and you as an individual can own that. So, at Wall, we are building a social commerce platform on Web3, and NFTs play a big part in that.”

Giving advice for up-and-coming poker players, Koddam said, “For people who are just getting started, the most important thing is to surround yourself with people who are better than you. Who have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.”

Clearly, Anujkumar Kodam has survived the test of time and is one player we are bound to see winning many more marquees in the future.
