Accumulating ₹8 Crores in lifetime online winnings is no mean feat. But when it comes to a poker hotshot like Sahil Mahboobani, it doesn’t seem like such a tall task after all. The 29-year-old entered the prestigious ‘₹8 Crores Club’ last month, becoming only the fifth player on our tracked database to earn a Super Achiever badge for this achievement.

The Hong Kong-born and brought-up player has been living in Delhi for the past four years. But he is an old-timer in poker as he has been playing the game since he was 15 years old. Mahboobani’s love for gaming was so intense that he chose not to tread the conventional path of pursuing college studies. Alongside poker, he became a professional Counter-Strike player.

A thorough gentleman on and off the felts, Mahboobani’s experience in the game speaks for its own. He may be yet to bag a major flagship, such as The Millionaire, but has enough big scores to prove his mettle. His career-best online score remains his runner-up finish in The Spartan Poker’s SSS#10 Super High Roller in February 2020 worth ₹15.12 Lakhs.

Mahboobani has been a firm fixture on the live felts and has two cashes at the World Series of Poker along with deep runs in World Poker Tour India, Baazi Poker Tour, and the India Poker Championship. His most remarkable achievement on the live tournament tables is his runner-up finish in the 2018 WPT India Main Event. And even though Mahboobani lost the title to Nikunj Jhunjhunwala, he pocketed a career-best ₹46.53 Lakhs! He currently boasts of ₹55.19 Lakhs in live tournament winnings.

The pandemic-induced lockdown changed life for many, and like many other poker pros, Mahboobani realized it was time to slow down and focus on health as well.

He says – “The pandemic put exercise into my schedule, and I have been exercising pre-grind around five times a week.”

His own grind schedule is hectic. He plays poker six days a week, usually starting around 8.45 PM. How does he work on improving his game?! “I feel it’s crucial to have a like-minded group of poker players to study with and work on and help improve your game. In the recent months, I have been working with other top poker players in the Indian scene…they have been a crucial factor in the improvement of my game,” Mahboobani says, adding that he also has a Run It Once subscription and watches videos on BBZ whenever he can.

Looking at the Indian player pool, Mahboobani feels the practice of bankroll management is sorely missing. “Poker isn’t going anywhere, and tomorrow is always a new day. I would advise people to play within their rolls to be more disciplined.”

Mahboobani is an inspiration for many for his sheer dedication to the game. Still, for the man himself, international players who create valuable content like ‘Bencb’ and India’s poker pioneer Aditya Agarwal are players he looks up to. No, Mahboobani has no plans for the WSOP this year but is all up for making an outing to Las Vegas in 2022!

A big shoutout to Sahil Mahboobani and his undeterred dedication to poker!
