If you scroll through our past #WomeninPoker features, you will notice that this column is almost entirely dedicated to highlighting the accomplishments of Indian women in the poker industry. Digressing from the course this week, we feature the ‘women of the hour’ Vanessa Kade.

Last night, Kade entered the history books by shipping the 15th Anniversary Special Edition of the Sunday Million on PokerStars, netting a life-changing $1.51 Million! The Canadian pro toppled a field of 69,876 players across a gruesome three-day long grind and defeated Pawel Ladniak heads-up to make her way into the record books.

To shed some light on Kade’s poker journey, she started her gaming industry career as a video game producer for Disney Interactive Studios, Lucasfilm, and BioWare.

The Canadian gamer turned into a full-time poker player in 2014 and quickly rose into prominence as one of the most-followed female Twitch streamers.

She got the gossip mills churning last December after publicly opposing GGPoker’s signing on Dan Bilzerian as a brand ambassador. Bilzerian, the self-proclaimed “King of Instagram,” retaliated by insulting Kade on Twitter, evoking a bitter feud.

While the move invited strong criticism by the poker community, GGPoker reacted to the incident four months later by closing Kade’s affiliate account. Ironically, all of this went down a day after International Women’s Day.

Kade didn’t hold back on her reactions leading to a mass outcry. To clarify its stand amidst mounting pressure from the poker community, GGPoker came out with a statement defending its position, stating that Kade’s affiliate account had been terminated on the grounds of her “violation of our terms & conditions.”

Kade moved over the controversy by joining America Cardroom as the US-facing poker site’s brand ambassador. As the latest member of their Team Pros roster, Kade joins a prestigious lineup with well-respected superstars like Jon Van Fleet, Jeff Boski, Michael Loncar, Jon Pardy, Ebony Kenney and the legendary 2003 WSOP Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker.

For Kade, who has shot to poker superstar status with her brilliant win last night, the $1.51 Million payday is also her biggest score to date. Kade later tweeted that this was the “best day of my life!”

Congratulations to Vanesa and her undeterred spirit to never step back!
